Really fun spot. Odd Culture has such a great atmosphere — lively, a bit wild, and very Newtown in the best way. The drinks list is impressive and the food is genuinely good, though the menu is definitely on the pricier side. Still, most dishes felt worth it.

It does get loud (conversation becomes more… performance art ), but somehow that adds to the charm.
A great place for a night out when you’re in the mood for something a little different. I’ll be back.

Located in the heart of Newtown King Street. Well decorated venue with great selection of wines and beers. Food was good with few fairly unique dishes, main dishes like beef and chick pea with octopus were really good. Other specials are potato chips with liver pate fried mash and squid salad were among the favourite too. Friendly service and fantastic atmosphere!

Great new haunt in Newtown with a large open space dining experience. Can get very noisy downstairs especially on a weekend, they have tables upstairs if you want it a little quieter. Very good cocktails.
Interesting wine menu that is on the exy side and has many varieties that aren’t from local wineries so it’s a little bit of a lottery. Overall the food is awesome. A must is the Blood Pancake, don’t be deterred by the name just try it. All dishes are design to share so you all get to share the experience and discuss what you thought which is a fun way of dining.
The steak was a little chewy if that’s your thing. Also try the beer bread.
You can also request to sit up at the kitchen bar and watch them weave their magic.

Newtown has an almost endless array of places to get your food fix but not all are created equal. It’s hard to sort the wheat from the chaff and when you discover something amazing it’s worth sharing the experience. Odd Culture seems to have been hiding in plain sight and I can’t believe it took me this long to try one of the gems of King Street.

We arrived for a 7pm seating to find the venue buzzing with activity. It’s a popular place so make sure you get a booking in advance. There are two dining areas, ground floor is more of a bistro/ bar feel with high tables and chairs and a relaxed casual feel. I think this is where the a La carte diners are seated and upstairs there is more traditional style table and booth style seating where the banquet menu seemed to be concentrated.

Right from the start I have to say the service is absolutely top notch. From greeting to farewell the staff are fabulous. Friendly and accomodating and the right amount to casual to put you at ease throughout the experience. This service was delivered by maître de Heidi and our server Maya. Heidi showed us to the “best table in the house” and checked on us throughout the night. Maya was amazing and a perfect guide through the journey of the banquet menu.

The food is much like the service, non pretentious and well delivered. The ingredients are fresh and vibrant and the delivery by the kitchen is perfect. Following the trend where all dishes are served share style; result is convivial, enjoyable dining.

A good mix of different ingredients through the courses and portion sizing is right on the money. You will leave with a satisfied tummy and very satisfied tastebuds.

Some stand out dishes for me were the pickled muscles and the bavette steak. The muscles were super fresh and complimented perfectly with a simple smoked cream. The steak was superb. Perfectly medium rare with a crispy seared crust. The burnt garlic and egg yolk sauce making me wish I had saved some of the beer bread to soak up the rest of the mouth watering juice.

The desert was a chocolate pudding made with soya sauce. I know it sounds weird but the soya gave it a rich dark complexity that was a bit like golden syrup. Really creative cooking and an interesting dish.

We had a few drinks and the menu is extensive. There are some lovely cocktails and beers on offer which is my usual go too.

Is there a down side to Odd Culture? If I had to say anything it’s that it gets busy and as a result gets quite loud. But not to the point that you can’t continue with conversation and it all adds to the happy atmosphere of a really enjoyable experience.

Odd Culture is on my favourites list and I can’t wait to come back again soon. Thanks!

Everything we had here was delicious! It’s hard to pick a favourite, but a few standouts would have to be the Buckwheat Crumpet with Smoked Tomato Jam, Blood Pancake, Potato Lorette and the Beer Bread. For dessert, Malt Cake and Dulce de Leche Flan (and I don’t normally like flan!).

The staff were all lovely and helpful and vibe is great!

Only talking about the bar : the place is great, with nice light, decoration and atmosphere. They have a large choice of wine and alcohol. The cocktails are good but too icy…
I also had a “bad experience” with the service unfortunately, but maybe it’s just me this specific time.

I think this place is overhyped!

Be warned there’s upstairs which is a French fine dining bistro and the bottom is a casual drinks spot with bar food. But they share the same menu.

Don’t recommend the chicken, had a strange flavour and was very tough / overcooked.

Recommend: pate and tartare. The tartare did have gelatine pieces so if that’s not up your alley, look away.

Cheeseburger isn’t worth the $$ but a solid eat.

I had been walking by this place a lot and I knew I wanted to pay them a visit.

We started off with the ‘Beer Bread’ and ended up using it for a couple of other dishes too, so it was the perfect starter to order. A couple of other snacks included the ‘Anchovy Cigar’ and the ‘Fish on Toast’. I was a HUGE fan of these, especially the Fish on Toast. It had sardine, sambal and coconut butter and was finished off with pickled diakon.

Off of the ‘small plates’ section of the menu, we ordered the ‘Raw Beef with Puffed Rice, Herbs & Lime’. No surprise, this was also a winner for me. The puffed rice gave a wonderful texture tot he dish. We also ordered the ‘Hiramasa Kingfish with Smoked Chicken Fat Mayo & Saltbush’. Just beautiful and just like the raw beef dish, the crispiness of the saltbush made each mouthful exciting to eat.

Since we had been eating fish and beef, we decided to go for the ‘Celeriac ‘Maltagliati’ with Tomato Garum Sauce & Basil’. It wasn’t my favourite dish but I didn’t hate it either. It had a very earthy flavour to it but the sauce and basil helped bring it down.

The ‘Chicken Liver Pâté with Potato Chips & Fish Sauce Caramel’ was just divine. I loved the presentation of the potato chips, but you had to look in between to find any trace of pâté. Once you got to it and scooped it up with the sauce and potato chip, it was a wonderful mouthful of flavour. Saltiness, sweetness.. just beautiful and a dish you MUST order!

The octopus and squid was good! A side of bread would’ve been nice to go with the octopus as it can be quite salty. Ordered the Blood Pancake cause its what people say it was interesting. Found out there’s Pig’s blood mixed into the Pork Jowl. Interesting to try but would not order the savory + sweet dish again.
The staff was really friendly. And it’s a nice cozy dimly lit place ideal for dates and people watch if you sit by the window.
