Oaxaca Amsterdam

An ancient gastronomic heritage. Eating at OAXACA is like being transported to Mexico. Through ancestral techniques, planting a multitude of Mexican produces in our gardens and “milpas”, and cooking with native ingredients. We’re talking about nixtamalized corn dough ground on volcanic stone. Knowledge of all the chiles, “soasados” and “tatemados”, charcoal-grilled fish, pre-Hispanic “moles” and stews. Guacamole prepared in a “molcajete” and spicy sauces, just as they are made and enjoyed in Mexico.

Friendly and attentive servers. Food and drinks were tasty and authentic. Never had I had an espresso martini with Mezcal and it was amazing. Had the carnitas special they had and it was delicious. Would love to return and try their guacamole which they make fresh at your table.

Expensive? Yes! BUT you can definitely taste the quality, that they use top ingredients. Nothing was over-seasoned but everything tasted fresh and flavourful. Thier soft shell crab taco is probably the best taco I have eaten.

The table was a bit too high for the chairs but I soon forgot about it because of the tasty food. The atmosphere perhaps needs some work: nicer lighting and some table decorations would be good.

Lovely meal. Especially loved the guacamole starter experience & the prawn tacos starter was insane So so nice !! The staff were so attentive , explaining all dishes to us even when English wasn’t their first language. Fast service but didn’t feel rushed.
Will definitely return & would recommend to anyone who fancies it ❤️

This was my second visit and both were amazing! My fiancé who loves Mexican cuisine rated it 12 out of 10. Staff were friendly and provided great service! Will be going back and recommending to friends and family.

The food here is incredibly authentic—both the taste and the ingredients are fantastic! It’s fresh and well-made. Having traveled to Oaxaca, I can confidently say this is the most authentic I’ve experienced so far in Europe. I’m so happy I decided to try it! The atmosphere is cozy and vibrant, with a great blend of calmness and energy. I would recommend this place to all my friends! Thank you for putting so much love and attention into preparing the food. ❤️

I grew up in Los Angeles, California, so I’m used to eating good Mexican food, but Oaxaca was the BEST Mexican food I’ve ever had (Outside of Mexico that is)! The guacamole was made at the table, and all of the ingredients were fresh and tasty. I also had the tomato salad, and the chicken mole. And for dessert I had the Quattro Leche, and Oh My God it was delicious!

More importantly, the service was AMAZING. The staff worked as a team checking up on us, explaining the food and when they delivered it to the table, and overall being extremely friendly and professional.

I discovered the restaurant by chance while walking down the street, and I’m glad I checked it out. The meal and the service were so good, in fact, that I came back four days later and brought four colleagues with me (in total we were 3 Americans, 1 Swede, and 1 Dutch). Everyone enjoyed the meal as much as I had the first night, and we all look forward to visiting again on our next trip to Amsterdam.

My husband and I were walking around yesterday in Amsterdam, and we saw this restaurant…So I took a picture, and we researched it and we came back today.

So glad that we came back, because everything we had was delicious. We started with a classic margarita and a Paloma. They were both very tasty, and then my husband got a Pacifico beer. We started with the guacamole- served with tortilla chips and Chicharrones.

I ordered the chicken tinga tacos while my husband ordered Al Pastor. You get two of each, so we shared. They serve it with some spicy sauces- one red- smokey, & one green- spicy, & of course- some lime. Both of our tacos were cooked to perfection and honestly SOOO delicious. We have been to Mexico City a handful of times, and these tacos in Amsterdam rival tacos we’ve had in Mexico City!!

Might have to come back tomorrow for lunch. They have a lot of tequila to choose from – which is nice because my husband and I love Tequila! You can sit in the bar area with a limited menu, or sit in the restaurant with the more extensive menu. We sat in the bar and it was wonderful.

I definitely recommend this restaurant if you are craving Mexican while in Amsterdam!!

We dined at Oaxaca twice, and I can say with certainty that it’s the best Mexican food you can get in Amsterdam. I’ve visited almost all the Mexican restaurants in Amsterdam, and nothing comes close to the food you get here. The reason for four stars and not five is the service—it’s extremely slow, and if you want to order something, you need to wait for someone to come to your table. From what we noticed, they are not well-staffed; it’s just 2-3 people serving the huge restaurant with many tables. So, both times it was a frustrating experience to wait for someone to take your order and then get your order or your check at the end. Their mole sauce is very delicious and authentic. Their cheesecake was amazing, but we did not like the tres leches cake. Their other main dishes were very delicious.
