What an amazing experience. The food is fantastic. I had the ribeye and it was melt in your mouth tender and bursting with flavor. My taste buds practically did a happy dance at the first bite. I also really enjoyed the side of spaghetti. It was buttery and delicious. The staff was friendly and efficient. I felt taken care of but not hovered over. It was perfect and I highly recommend stopping in.

Excellent food and service! It’s small so make sure you make a reservation but definitely worth the trip when you’re in Mason City! The steak and noodles in sauce were amazing!

We were able to get a same-day reservation at 8:30 PM, which is what we wanted because we got into town late. Northwestern Steakhouse was full of customers when we arrived.

We seated promptly even though we were a few minutes early. And our server, Heidi, took great care of us. You should ask for her if possible. Although everyone there was super helpful and attentive. Courtney also helped us.

We had a couple of cocktails, which were delicious and affordable. They brought us a pitcher of water so we could refill our own water glasses, which was lovely because of the heat. They also kept my Coke glass refilled.

We each had the Greek salad, which was fantastic! Great feta cheese, a little egg and pickle with a wonderful dressing.

My wife had the petite fillet and a baked potato and she loved it! Her steak was cooked, perfectly, medium rare as she asked.

I had the top sirloin and spaghetti. Mine was cooked perfectly medium as I requested and the spaghetti was something truly special. It looks so simple, but it is unique and amazing. You definitely need to try it.

Look forward to returning to this restaurant tomorrow for prime rib.

This is apparently a highly coveted restaurant. Like many others my in-laws brought me an hour before the restaurant opened and we filed into a long line since they didn’t take reservations beforehand. I think they accept reservations/call-aheads once you get there in person. Luckily, the line moved swiftly until all the tables were filled. I love the rustic feel of the restaurant! The history makes it all even better.

They brought out some soft white bread to start. It was my first time there so I wasn’t sure what to order. I ended up getting the lamb chops with a baked potato and Greek salad and everyone else got prime rib with rice pilaf. The food was fantastic! The meat was so juicy, tender, and especially flavorful. They didn’t overdo it with spices or try to over-complicate the dishes. Just good old-fashioned salt and pepper, some garlic, and good cuts of meat! I enjoyed every aspect of the meal! Pretty pricey but worth it for good food! I definitely recommend queuing up early! Can’t wait to visit again!

Traveling through a small city in northern Iowa in the middle of January—cold, snowy, and quiet.
But a positive mind finds good things anywhere.
Hidden in a neighborhood (not even on Main Street) is a 105-year-old family-owned restaurant. No fancy look, no neon lights—just a simple banner and a lot of history.
Hands down, one of the best steaks I’ve had. And that side spaghetti? Unforgettable.
Proof that the best experiences are often the most unexpected ones.

I was referred to come to Northwestern Steakhouse. We all left very satisfied and full. The steaks had great flavor. I had roasted chicken and was very impressed with the seasoning. The Greek salad was also a nice option.

Consistently delicious over the 30 yrs of serving great NY Strip steak and the pasta is a great substitute for their baked potato.
Don’t know about the deserts, I have been too full from the meal to try.
Little pricey but worth it for special events.
The gals waiting tables and handling to go orders are very sweet and friendly.
I’ll be back…. to Terminate another meal. Lolol

We had the Tuesday night special ribeye with pasta, salad and bread. So delicious and a lot of food. The restaurant has been here over a 100 years. It small and larger booths that are very cozy. We will definitely be back if we are in the area. Mary and the other staff were very friendly and efficient.

Does this place need yet another five star review? ABSOLUTELY. I moved to Iowa six years ago, and one of the recommendations I received was to visit Northwestern Steakhouse. So after six years of living in this great state, we finally made a small detour on the way home from Minneapolis.

We were fortunate to make a last minute reservation on a BUSY Saturday night. This place is popular with travelers AND locals. Respect their reservation rules and policies. It’s not a big place and they do their best to accommodate the demand.

This is not a traditional steakhouse. The cuts and sizes are pretty American with Greek style/flavors. Never had it before and it was effing delicious. We ordered the filet and ribeye. Both were cooked to perfect medium rare. The filet just melted in my mouth. It was the rice side that kind of stole the show. More addicting than crack.

Service was phenomenal. We were seated almost 30 minutes after our reservation but enjoyed drinks upstairs in their lounge, frequently being checked on. We honestly felt like local regulars with how nice everyone was. Anne felt like the grandmother I never had.

Highly recommend making a trip to Northwestern a priority. Mason City is a sleepy little town to me, and I’m glad I got past my biases for small town restaurants because this place is a GEM.

The dining was amazing small restaurant but still amazing experience. Menus are right on the table a bit pricy but worth every penny. I’d did the prime rib and Spegetti they had worth it comes with salad as well they have alcohol available as well but went with Mr pibb. Was amazing and can’t wait to go again.
