The Northside Diner was excellent!
The people are lovely, the service is great.
The atmosphere is very creative using old books and folding the pages to create designs. The huge book clock on the wall was fantastic!
I had a double smash burger and a salad which was excellent! The food is fresh and delicious…
We look forward to going back…

Cute diner in downtown Washington. Locally owned and operated so I love that. The servers and staff were very friendly and attentive. The food was flavorful. Loved the mozzarella triangles and the marinara it came with was good. Maybe it’s because I love authentic food corkscrew shrimp po’ boy was alright but missing some New Orleans flavor. I would defintely go back and try other dishes, compared to some other resturants in town it definitely has flavor and is seasoned nicely.

We love the diner! The thoughtful decorations pay homage to the original, historic Winga’s while putting a welcome, modern twist on the building. The food was excellent! It’s not often that you see such variety of cuisines in small-town Iowa, but this team offers a delicious variety and pulls it off with panache. We shared a Butterbeer float and it made our Millennial hearts sing. Northside Diner is a new Washington staple, and we are so excited to return soon.

A little gem in the heart of downtown Washington, IA. First time to this establishment. Came here for supper. Hours are 4 pm – 8 pm for a supper menu.
I had one of the specials – Ham balls with tomato glaze with 2 sides. I chose roasted vegetables and mac & cheese. For dessert, I chose the strawberry/rhubarb pie.
Th fresh brewed coffee was the best I’ve had in a restaurant. Ham balls were perfectly cooked. The roasted vegetables were simply delicious. The mac & cheese…and I get mac & cheese at a lot of establishments… was simply made but one of the best I’ve had. The pie had a very thin crust and was just to my liking. I have no complaints only praise for the experience.
The wait to sit wasn’t long. I sat at the bar. The only one at the bar. Oldies music playing but not overbearing. Very clean place. Restrooms were clean and well kept.
Very unique book decor on the walls. Stamped tin ceiling. The waitstaff was attentive. The wait for my food was not out of the ordinary. All the tables were occupied. The menu has many more items that I want to try. Come and join me. You will love yourself for trying this place.
Recommend highly!

Our community has anxiously awaited the opening of this amazing establishment. There is so much history in this space, and it’s wonderful to see new life breathed into, what once was the Northside Cafe and later, Wingas Restaurant.
The craftsmanship, diligence, and creativity, that have gone into the renovation, deserve high praise. When you walk in you immediately feel the retro vibe with many eclectic added touches.
The owners were smart to have some days of soft openings. This allowed a few patrons, at a time, to try the cuisine, as they introduced their menu items and trained their staff.
I was lucky to dine twice, for breakfast. I highly recommend the sweet pancake tacos, and the savory pancake tacos.
I can’t wait to return for lunch and dinner.
These first few weeks you will need to be prepared to wait in line to get a table, as MANY are wanting to try the new joint in town! I highly recommend the Northside Diner!!

Great old fashion diner with modern versions of typical dishes. The soda fountain is old fashion and there’s lots of choices. The root beer with chocolate and ice cream was very good. The smashed meatloaf was full of flavor with sourdough bread I will be back to eat again. The tenderloin was thick and perfect size. Also the staff was very good and checked on us.

Absolutely stellar food, friendly service, and the atmosphere was a beautiful blend of the previous and current owners! I have tried several menu items and one of my favorites is the Caribbean bowl with a side of the Seashore fries and followed by a delightful root beer float. None of it lasted long on my plate!

Winga’s Cafe has been closed for years and Isabella and Ed have renovated it and it is now the Northside Diner. It has a nostalgic charm with its high tin ceilings and repurposed doors and books for artsy decor. The cozy space features only booths and a bar with stools. I added below that it is wheelchair friendly so if you or a friend/family member uses one (as it does our family) please read that section.

My daughter and I enjoyed a hearty breakfast of biscuits and gravy, banana bread French toast, and unique pancake tacos with eggs, ham, and hollandaise sauce. We had too much since get bought 3 dishes and we took home leftovers.

We went on a test run of their breakfast service and so the waitress was learning the ropes and there were some tiny hiccups with dishes (like missing Hollandaise on the tacos which was remedies) but we took that into consider and knew the experience was only temporary as the restaurant continues to grow. I gave it 5 stars because the issues were minor and I am sure if we returned it would be great all-around.

We didn’t have room for pie, but we’ve heard it’s fantastic. The original soda fountain is a must-try for our next visit, which will be at lunchtime.
