Sangria – we ordered one red and one white. Not a single piece of fruit to be found in either and overly sweet. Well north of $10 a glass and just lacking.
Sikil Pak – possibly the best bite of the night. A small cup of this ground pumpkin seed appetizer served with chips. The flavor was big and bold. The texture was a coarse grind and it is not to be missed. At $8 it is a bit steep for what you get but certainly should not be missed. Order this!
Pulpo – the flavors were right on but the octopus was a bit overcooked and rubbery as a result. I did like the chili oil drizzle but could see where others would consider it an attempt to obscure the flavor of the octopus. Portion size matched the price.
Tamal – just disappointing. The masa was dry, the fillings lacking in quantity and poorly distributed through the tamal. Not at all a $12 dish.
Flan – quite good but the texture was a bit strange and more like a thick pudding than a custard. The raspberry reduction was outstanding.
Service was a bit of a trainwreck. Our appetizer showed up before our place settings and I’m pretty sure the second item to hit the table arrived before the drinks. Our third item arrived before the second one had been consumed and I had to tell the waitress not to let the kitchen send out the last dish until we had finished the one in front of us. Just clunky all around but our server did recognize that the wife was not drinking her sangria and asked about it. It was comped but we still dropped $90 on what you see listed above and nothing more.
We were in and out in a not much more than 30 minutes. Based on the price point, the pace of service seemed quite odd. The waitress even attempted to drop the check without asking if we wanted dessert.
Bon Appetit named them one of the top 10 new restaurants in America in 2017 and I wish I had visited at that point. I caught signs of that level of brilliance in some of the items we tried but there was too much wrong with the entire experience to go more than 3 stars.
The carne asada tacos were traditional smaller street tacos in a corn tortilla with a generous serving of carne asada that was well seasoned.
I was craving for seafood, and Nixta definitely delivered. We ordered guacamole, Baja cod tacos, mixto ceviche, tamales, and churros. For me, the real winner at Nixta would be the mixto Mexican ceviche. It’s a perfect balance of acidity, heat, and freshness. Guacamole was heavenly good. The cod in Baja tacos was crispy fried but lacking of taste, and texture.
Service was friendly and attentive. Jonathan, the manager also brought out gelato for my son. He was so kind and welcoming. Overall, it was a fantastic dining experience at Nixta. We loved it and will definitely come back. Highly recommended!
And good luck if you’re ordering salsa AND guacamole, you only get one basket of chips (not even filled up all the way) for $4 and $8 for guacamole. Couldn’t even finish them because we ran out of chips. The ceviche comes with ONE singular chip for the whole bowl. Just not a good experience at all. Especially at the price, I would skip this one.
