What started as a small independent restaurant, has transformed into a popular family business. Nico’s was founded by Nicolas Moran Carreon in San Diego, and in 1993, his brother Prieto opened the first Nico’s in Arizona. Today, 23 locations can be found scattered across San Diego and Arizona.
Nico’s picture rocks is the most recent and most young owned location. The owner, grandson René Carreon opened this location in October 2024. While this Nico’s has a smaller menu, it features a lovely outdoor patio area where you can enjoy your meal. At Nico’s Express, you can dine in, order takeout, or use the drive-thru. Whenever you’re in the Picture Rocks area, be sure to stop by this location!

Ok, so when they first opened, it was amazing. However, I believe they fired their cook because the food, especially the carne, has gone downhill. Today, I ordered a carne asada burrito, carne asada taco, rolled tacos, and a bean n cheese. The carne asad was DRENCHED in black pepper. So much so that limes, pico, and hot space could not bring the flavor back to palatable. I’ve lived in South tucson for 20 years, maybe that spoiled me, but we are done done done with this location.
Also, the salsa is just hot, no flavor. I really want to leave a bag of carne seasoning and limes at the door to help.

The woman who took my order and handed me my food was friendly and professional. The bean & cheese burrito was the best value, for the size. Rolled tacos were priced around what I expected. However, I expected the side portion of rice would be double the amount I actually received (the portion was slightly under a cup of cooked rice). I didn’t have to wait in line and my order was out within a couple minutes. They don’t skimp on the cheese. So if you are a cheese lover, this is your place.

I’d give it more stars if I could. Staff is friendly. Food is awesome and sitting outside on the patio, watching the do people go by, ties it all together. It’s bad for them, but lucky for me that we’re from Virginia, or I’d be here every day!

We longed for a good burrito/ taco place near us…man did they come through! We have a bed and breakfast, 5 miles away , and we send our guests there, after a long hike in the Saguaro National Park West. Fantastic food and service! Love it!!

We’re staying at a VRBO nearby and it was recommended that we try the taco stand at this intersection. Sadly it is now obvious that the recommendation was intended for EL TACO which is the taco stand across the street from Nico’s.
There can be no excuse for such a poor excuse for Mexican food this close to the border. We ordered the “3 Rolled Tacos”, extra guac’ and a carne Asada burrito. I’d say the rolled tacos were actually the frozen taquitos from Costco but the Costco taquitos are (not good, but) much better. They told me that the guacamole was homemade…well maybe, if you home is Sysco Foods. It was soupy and totally tasteless, probably frozen avocado purée . The carne Asada in the burrito was tough and also tasteless.
I do not understand the 4+ star rating. I suppose if you’re from Idaho you might think this is what Mexican food is supposed to be.

I recently tried a Mexican truck, and unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. The food was overly greasy, and the flavors tasted old, making it difficult to even finish the meal. The guacamole was a watery mess, which took away from its usual creamy texture and flavor. To top it off, the horchata lacked the refreshing taste I was expecting. Overall, it was an unpleasant meal, and I wouldn’t recommend it.
