As of July 1st 2025, New Hwong Kok is closed due to health code violations. I guess the health department didn’t like the sweat from the chef either

Good roast duck and roast pork. If you can, don’t have them chop it up. Instead, bring it home and reheat at 425 degrees. Don’t put it into a preheated oven. Start with the oven cold, and once the oven reaches 425, heat for another 5 minutes.

This is one of those places to get your lunch. However, you’re better off doing a take out rather than dining in because of how bland the atmosphere is. Still boxes at the front. I remember dining here when I was a lot younger. Wasn’t really looking bad there at that time.

The food was slimy and oily. I consider it below average tbh. It’s cheap at the bright side. I highly recommend going to other restaurants if you want to get better quality of duck and chicken.

Was excited to get some authentic HK bbq and diner foods but was disappointed to find the wontons to be uncooked. I hope I’ll be okay tomorrow. But being Asian and didn’t want to waste I cooked it again. See the difference in my photos of cooked and uncooked? The shrimp dumplings were fine and was actually pretty good. The egg tart was not sweet enough. Shame.

Here’s the review with the added information:
“Great take out place for roasted duck and pork. My fav is duck roasted plate which came with rice and steamed cabbage. Loved the duck flavor. It’s in the lions supermarket complex, just outside the supermarket. Not recommended for dining-in. It’s a quick grab the food and take away.”

I got the combo pork and duck for takeout and it was solid. The cabbage was steamed instead of pickled but no complaints from me. I wanted to order just the roast duck but I came late in the day and they only had the pork//duck combo left. Don’t come too late for their more popular dishes or else they might be out.

When we want bbq ducks, we come here to get them, but they also have bbq duck wonton noodles that’s inexpensive and quite tasty. We think this has new owner because most of the old workers no longer there or at least we don’t see them. Before COVID we could sit down and have a very nice and inexpensive dinner with the family when we didn’t want to cook. The kids would order bbq duck with rice and I and my wife would order roasted duck noodles soups. My son loves the wonton noodles here since he doesn’t like roasted duck much. Everyone is happy when we sit down here.
Now, there’s no dine in, only to go. Last week we decided to order to go, although we don’t believe in to go soups because by the time we got home it’s no longer hot.
Anyhow, the BBQ duck and wonton were still tasty, the noodles cooked just right although the soup didn’t taste as good as before but still good.
The price went up as everything else but still cheaper than a bowl of pho or any other soup bowls out there.

I like this place. It’s a classic Cantonese style BBQ house. They have both dine in or to go options. Within 10 dollars, one gets 1/4 of a roasted duck, enough rice, a little vegetable and hot tea, most of them are delicious. It’s more like street food but not a very clean restaurant. Affordable and tasty. A good place for a quick lunch.

$10 minimum to use a credit card.

When dine in, sometimes there could be no waiter, and one has to wait in the to go line for 5-10 minutes.

Regarding flavors, I rate it as one of the best among Cantonese BBQ places in east bay.

Exactly what you expect of a quick serve dim sum counter. Are the floors simultaneously sticky and slippery? Yes. But is the food delicious? Also yes.
Ordering can be stressful, but know what you want in advance and it’ll be fine (you may have to ask for specifics as everything is not displayed up front or is still being made in the back).

Disappointing experience — Poor service, and mediocre food

I had the unfortunate experience of visiting “New Hwong Kok” yesterday, and I must say that I feel utterly deceived by their Chinese name, as it is the same as the famous “Good Mong Kok Bakery.” Unfortunately, the service and food at this establishment were far from satisfactory.

Upon perusing the menu, I was particularly interested in trying the dried fish and peanut congee, which was clearly listed. However, the cashier lady responded in a condescending manner, informing me that they only served one type of congee—century egg and pork congee—which wasn’t even mentioned on the menu. Disappointed and unwilling to eat century eggs, I decided to explore other options.

I settled for an egg tart and the sticky rice in lotus leaf (Lo Mai Gai). It was less than $10, and I was prepared to pay for it using my credit card. However, my plans took an unexpected turn when the lady at the counter informed me that they had a minimum charge of $10 for credit card payments. This policy was not clearly stated anywhere in the establishment, leaving me feeling frustrated and inconvenienced.

Reluctantly, I decided to add half portion of the soy sauce chicken to meet the minimum charge requirement, which costed me another $12.

When I inquired about getting some minced ginger to complement the chicken, I was astounded by the response. The lady gave me one which is kind of small portion for half a chicken, so I politely asked if I could get another one. Then she curtly informed me that I would be charged an additional $0.50 for an extra serving, despite the fact that I had just spent $20+ and she’s well aware that I don’t have any cash with me. It was disheartening to see such a lack of flexibility and understanding when I could have just canceled the order instead of making extra purchase.

Finally, I arrived home and eagerly tried the soy sauce chicken, only to be met with immense disappointment. It was the most overcooked and dried-out chicken I have ever encountered in the SF Bay Area. The quality fell far short of expectations and left me wondering why I even bothered to spend my time and money at “New Hwong Kok.”

In conclusion, my first visit to “New Hwong Kok” was an unpleasant experience marred by poor service, mediocre food, and an unmentioned credit card policy. I would not recommend this establishment to anyone seeking authentic Chinese cuisine or a pleasant shopping(dining) experience. It is clear that they have much room for improvement in terms of both their menu offerings, transparency regarding their payment policies and customer service!

A Chinese roast pork/duck over rice and dim sum spot within a shopping center. Solid place to grab a quick bite to eat. It’s also generally affordable. $12.99 for #7. It was a bbq and crispy pork over rice with cabbage. Also ordered 4 orders of shumai and hargow, sorry spell check. All was very good and worth the price.
