Geographically Namjai is the closest Thai in town, so I have to ask myself, Self, why don’t you go here more often? When they first opened I was thrilled to have Thai firmly ensconced in the hood and the folks were great, but my initial visits were crushed by the simplest of things. The satay sauce, that bastion of asian eateries was so sweet that it was more like a candy than a food group. It was so sweet that it seemed like a caramel rather than a sauce. So, even though other options seemed promising I moved on to other culinary discoveries. Launched into the unknown like Christopher Columbus finding new lands and appropriating them.
Well, I’ve finally run out of new places to try and I thought I’d give Namjai another chance. Right out of the gate, like a bull fighter confronting the bull I try the Satay chicken and the sauce, although still sweet is so much better! Not cloying, not diabetic seizure causing, not translucent with sugar… way more balanced, more, shall I say, adult.
I got that and a coconut based curry. I will admit that it was a little sweeter than I’m used to, the cook here definitely has a sweet tooth, but also not bad. They get 5 stars for improvement. I’ll try a dish with no sweet profile next time and see how they do. They get high marks for friendliness and atmosphere. It’s a sincere place and they seem genuinely happy to see you walk in the door. In general the St John’s corridor is a food wasteland with the exception of Don Juans Corner and it’s nice to have somewhere really close where you can feel welcome and well fed. It makes me feel more secure and loved.

Wow! Delicious Thai Food. Definitely some of the best Thai Spring/Salad Rolls (Namjai Rolls) that I have ever had. Crab rangoons were also excellent. Great service. Super allergy friendly with menu all defined regarding gluten free items, etc. We will be back.

Update. Chicken and sauce had a strange fish taste my last visit. Edited rating.
The best Thai food I’ve had in ages.
Panang Curry was off the charts! Smoking hot pot stickers. Top notch customer service. Spicy #3

We have ordered for pick up from here several times. Our favorites:

Mango w/sweetened sticky rice
Pad Thai
Pineapple fried rice
Tom kah soup

Of course the Thai iced tea and coffee are great too.

Nice find in Vancouver.

This is my second visit to this delictable gem hidden away on St. Johns in Minnehaha. This time we ordered chicken pumpkin curry (hot) and chicken pad thai (hot). We also ordered sticky rice with peanut sauce. I will, hands-down, say of all the Thai restaurants in Vancouver, I will NEVER order Thai from another restaurant again. The food prices and portions compared to other ones are heavily affordable. The husband and wife that run the place have been SO SWEET. Both times they gave us some free treats with our meal and are so appreciative and grateful for the business. I asked the owner if the hottest level of spicy was kill you dead hot and he laughed and told me it was American spicy so he included a side of homemade chili paste to increase the heat. I tried it tonight when we got home and the flavor was phenomenal! If you’re into Thai food, I HEAVILY encourage trying this mom and pop shop and encourage saving our local businesses in the midst of the pandemic.

-Side note Pad Thai (pictured) is $5.00 on Mondays. You’re welcome .

I eat here often and the food is consistently delicious. Authentic Thai food. Shrimp salad rolls with peanut sauce are some of the best in town. Family owned and operated.

I went there at closing the lasy working 3 nights ago was so cool but the food was the best Thai food I’ve ever had. Love Thai noodle by the mall but this place is so much better they were less expensive and food was like heaven. I ordered a 4 on spice and my dog was begging for it. My boyfriend brought home some Thai food tonight total garbage not worth the calories not worth the. Time eating it. I’m hooked on this food. I had enough food to last for 3 days one order. Love the love she put into my food. Who thought some place seemed like a hole in the wall would have been the best Thai food I’ve ever had I’m a very picky vegetarian and the lady was so sweet. And I ordered spring rolls the oil wasn’t old I give this place a 10……thanks for the love in my food and kind late night service.
