Nestled beside Northwestern University’s football stadium (currently under reconstruction), Mustard’s Last Stand has earned its place as a beloved local institution. While its unassuming exterior might suggest otherwise, this hot dog and burger joint serves up some of the most authentic Chicago-style fare you’ll find in the area.

The star of the menu is their Vienna Beef hot dog, prepared the true Chicago way – loaded with traditional fixings (and true to Chicago tradition, don’t even think about asking for ketchup!).
Their thin-cut french fries make the perfect accompaniment, and their burger selection is equally satisfying. A hidden gem on their menu is their horchata – be sure to try a sample of this refreshing beverage.

What sets Mustard’s apart isn’t just the quality of their food, but their unwavering consistency in both service and atmosphere. The environment is refreshingly unpretentious, offering both indoor seating and covered outdoor tables for warmer days. Their extended hours are a particular blessing, especially when other establishments in the area have closed for the evening.
Pro tip: When ordering, don’t hesitate to ask for topping recommendations – the staff knows their craft and can guide you to the perfect combination for your taste.

The restaurant has become a regular stop for both locals and visitors, proving its worth as a family-friendly destination. Whether you’re a Northwestern student, a Chicago hot dog purist, or simply someone in search of a satisfying meal, Mustard’s Last Stand delivers a consistently enjoyable dining experience that keeps customers coming back for more.

Highlights:
– Authentic Chicago-style Vienna Beef hot dogs
– Crispy thin-cut french fries
– Delicious horchata
– Indoor and outdoor seating options

(My apologies for not including a photo – I was so excited to dig into my perfectly prepared Chicago dog and crispy fries that I completely forgot to snap a picture before devouring them!)

A quick bites place. I felt like it was a little over pricey for the food even though the food was good.

We wanted to try some hotdogs at local spots during our trip, and this place was recommended by some locals. It’s an old establishment with a cool, vintage vibe that adds to its charm.

We tried their jumbo hotdogs and double cheeseburgers. Both were delicious and had that classic, satisfying taste. The hotdogs were perfectly cooked, and the double cheeseburgers were juicy and flavorful. Their hot sauce are pretty Hot, so be careful if you are sensitive. Fries portions are large enough for two.

If you’re looking for a local place with a nostalgic atmosphere, this is the spot. Definitely worth a visit!

Who cares about atmosphere. Bit like eating inside a mailbox, but outside tables great weather permitting. Besides, if you want excellent fast food you must stop here. It’s an institution, and a bribe when kids were good at Dr.s up the road corndogs w fries was their favorite reward!

The sandwich was really amazing. The sausage remind me of deep dish pizza sausage in peaquads. All right amount of spices. Thanks to the employees who confirmed with the owner over phone whether it doesn’t contain beef at all. The pictures around the restaurant walls are very iconic.

My wife grew up in Evanston, we were visiting and I’d never had a Chicago dog before. Pretty good food. Place isn’t fancy but its a hot dog stand, not Ruth’s Chris.

Best Chicago dog, that you can get in the safety and comfort of Evanston.

Sitting is limited, and cash is preferred at the register, but that is an amazing locally owned hot dog place with stories and cultural value for the neighborhood. They got combos and polish wieners.

I used to go here as a child all the time and recently re-visited as I was in town. The fries and hot dogs were just as good as I remember. The young lady working the register was so sweet. The cook quickly understood we would eat our hot dogs there and take the fries to go. Its very nostalgic for me and I loved every moment. It’s still the same quirky little building in Evanston.

This place is one of the WORST hot dog joints around the city! Very overpriced and overrated. The food is no better than McDonald’s. Hell, McDonald’s is actually better and cheaper! Avoid this place unless you want to better treated with rudeness and eat garbage food.

We tried 3 different types of Chicago food and this was the first one. It arrived in a timely manner via door dash. Great polish and bratwurst dogs! Flavorful mustard, and add ons! Generous portions on everything and the bay seasoning on the fries super yum!
