We stopped by Mum Foods Smokehouse in Austin on a Saturday afternoon around 2 pm. It wasn’t overly crowded when we arrived, but it definitely looked like they had a busy lunch rush — always a good sign.
I ordered The Original— pastrami on sourdough rye with sauerkraut and Swiss — and it was outstanding. The pastrami was perfectly seasoned and tender, and you can really taste the quality. They make their own mustard and bread, and both were absolutely amazing. The mustard had just the right kick, and the bread was fresh and flavorful — it really elevated the whole sandwich.
We also tried the pickle plate, which was such a fun addition. It wasn’t just your standard pickles — there were all kinds of vegetables, from green tomatoes to mushrooms and green beans. Everything was crisp, bright, and delicious.
My husband ordered a Nostalgic Classic bologna and cheese, and he loved it. It was simple in the best way — comforting, flavorful, and clearly made with care.

The pastrami brisket is the best I’ve ever had and I’ve had a lot of good texas bbq. The pastrami was incredibly moist with a perfect balance of pastrami flavor. The brisket was super moist and the fat well rendered. The deli melt is also a favourite with juicy patty, grilled onions, cheese and pickles. I love a good root beer and the root beer here is one of the best and poured like a beer. The service was exceptional, Mark and Geoff were so friendly and really welcomed us with southern hospitality. We definitely will be back in the future.

All of the food we had was fantastic, the French fries, latkes, the Rachel, even the regular brisket sandwich was better than many others I’ve had. Not sure what the holdup was to order, as the kitchen and line were often doing nothing but it took 20 minutes for the ordering line to move. Online ordering wasn’t available, but I would do that next time. Heads up, if you’re looking for a Coca Cola you’ll have to get a Mexican coke as they only have Maine root sodas.

Infatuation is an online site dedicated to talking about great food. In December 2024, they published an article titled “18 of the best Sandwiches in America.” On that list was Mum Foods in Austin. They singled out “The Rachel” as one of those 18 best in the U.S.A.
Since I live in Austin, going to Mum was an easy decision. The menu is very manageable, with five hand-carved sandwiches featured.
The Rachel ($17) is a third-pound smoked pastrami brisket with coleslaw, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing served on grilled rye bread. Served with a half dill pickle.
I really like the size of the sandwich. Generous portion of meat without being overstuffed. I like being able to get a bite from top to bottom of my hand-helds. The pastrami is very tender and flavorful.
I spoke to one of the owners, and he said that the other sandwich he would recommend is their “The Original.” It is a half-pound of pastrami on rye, served with a deli mustard. (Whole $20 – Half $11. You can add cheese or sauerkraut for an additional $0.50).
I found out that also make their own version of a Philly Cheesesteak ($16). I mentioned that I was recently was at R&Bs for one, and he said he loves their too. Mum’s version is also served on Amorosa rolls.
They also have five different barbequed meats available by the half pound, meat plate, or family style. There are BBQ sandwiches, soups & salads, sides, and specials (see menu picture). Four beers on tap as well as non-alcoholic beverages
Mum is located in the Windsor Park area of the city. It shares spaces with the Talisman Coffee Co. Parking is tight but manageable. Service is excellent.

Best Pastrami sandwich I’ve had since visiting New York. Visited on my birthday and they have complimentary cheese cake and root beer as well. Couldn’t have been kinder to us and the sandwich and soup were out of this world. 10/10 one of the best sandwich spots in Austin.

I really wanted to like this place, but it was overall disappointing. I went with a friend and we tried everything that looked interesting, which was a lot. The best barbecue was the sausage, I would give that 4 1/2 stars on its own. We got the poutine and the fries were OK on their own, but the cheese curds were not fresh and too large. And we got the “burnt ends” option, and that just meant that they threw some slices of brisket on top. Slices of brisket, to be clear, are not burnt ends. The biggest disappointment was the pastrami sandwich with sauerkraut. The bread, which I understand is House made was not dense enough to contain the substantial fillings. The pastrami was good, but it turned into a mushy mess. The pork ribs were about average for Austin barbecue but had some kind of sweet rub on them which I am not a fan of. The potato salad was average, the house made pickles were fine, but nothing special, the collard greens were good and it was nice to see them offered as a side, and the white bread they served with the barbecue, which I think is also House made was fine but nothing to write home about. Oh they did have a pretty good beer selection, so points for that.

I’ve been going to mums food since it opened, its easily my favorite bbq spot in austin. I went back today for the first time in a while, it was amazing. The poutine with pastrami was HUGE, couldn’t even finish it and I can really chow down. Love mums ♥️

Really loved the pastrami sandwiches, they gave us our sauerkraut on the side since we were worried we wouldn’t like it. However the sauerkraut was very delicious and a great addition to the sandwich. Definitely get the mustard and Swiss on it. The cheesecake was delicious and our favorite part was the fries. The fries were crispy, hot and big. we left saying we would come back just for these fries. Parking is very limited, we pulled up 10 minutes after opening and the lot was already full and found a big line. Well worth the wait though. Service was nice and they have to go stuff readily available for you to pack up leftovers, which you will have. I was naive and said I needed my own pastrami sandwich but me and my partner could have shared, it was so large. Overall we had a great morning here.

Best pastrami sandwich I’ve ever had. Blown away by the food and the hospitality.
Since it was my first time coming in and the menu was smaller as they were closing up early, Mark hooked me up.
I went for The Rachel and was glad I did. The sourdough and meat were perfect, and the slaw + dressing combo took it to the next level. Super moist interior sandwiched between two golden, toasty slices. I’m usually not a slaw guy but I certainly am now.
Mark even cut it fresh and delivered it to me personally, literally two minutes after I placed the order.
Will be back to try everything else on the menu.
Thanks Mark!

only in Austin, can you get the best barbecue/Jewish deli food. Mum foods is top five for me in Austin for barbecue but it’s a little out there off the beaten track so you don’t have the lines like you have everywhere else. ribs are a must sweet and peppery and of course, the pastrami sandwich
