I stopped in to try the chicken pie which was ok but I asked the cashier if the potato salad had onions and she said no. First bite was a big crunchy onion, which is the equivalent of superman swallowing a piece of kryptonite…. Anyway, didn’t get to try any sides.

I don’t like to beat up too much on small businesses but, given the lack of places to eat in Old Salem, be advised. Both of us ordered the Moravian Chicken Pie, a side salad, one hot apple cider and two bottles of water. Just under $50.00. If only the pies were delicious. They’re not. Full of chicken, but super bland/boring. Just shredded chicken and some gravy in a pie crust. The frozen ones at the stores are better. And I heard the guy behind the counter say they sell out of these every day. LOL – I guess because they’re featured prominently on the menu and the other options are sandwiches and salads. And then we ordered two cookies to go, and they were over $6.00. Just like a nice French pastry shop in Paris. My recommendation is to stay away from the chicken and cookies, and get the free tap water. Visit Old Salem, but don’t come hungry.

Muddy Creek Café offers sandwiches, sides, and cold drinks in the middle of Old Salem. It is centrally located and is a great place to find food to tide you over, rest a bit, and help replenish your energy as you explore the Old Salem Museums and Gardens. There is even coffee if you need a pick-me-up! They have outside seating as well, under the shade of umbrellas.

My husband and I came here for a quick lunch and were very pleased. The weather was pleasant so we decided to eat on the porch. Our sandwiches were well prepared and very tasty. The only thing I didn’t care for was the water was not filtered and had that “city water” taste to it. It may not be a big deal to you but I’m a water snob so it matters to me. There was a nice little porch cat that was very polite and never begged for food. I would certainly recommend for a nice lunch. Supposedly in the evenings they have music but we did experience this side of the venue.

Edited to respond to owner’s reply to my review: I go to mainly local, independent restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries, etc. You should read the other reviews from people patronizing your business. Many have said the same thing I did. At one point you guys stopped taking orders for over an hour because the kitchen was so far behind. There is NO REASON OR EXCUSE as to why it took 45 minutes to make 2 Reubens other than being understaffed or poor management. It’s too bad your place is the only one in Salem Village serving food. If we had known how long it was going to take we would have stopped before getting there. The family next to us ordered a salad and 2 PBJs and that took just as long as ours. BAD MANAGEMENT!!!!!!

Would give 0 stars if possible. Waiting 50+ min for a cold sandwich, people had been waiting an hour plus and not a single person inside or outside had gotten their food yet. Just a cafe full of people waiting for food but no food at their tables. For a $12 sandwich this is just ridiculous. Could have a least told us about the wait time. The cold sandwich pictured took 1 hour and 8 min for them to make. I have spent over a decade working in kitchens, this is just unacceptable.
Edit: I am sure their service isn’t always like this, but on the day we went it was extremely lacking.

My father and his friend play music at Muddy Creek every once in awhile on weekends. So my boyfriend finally made it out to see them play and join my mother for dinner. Most of the parking lot was already full but we found a place towards the back. We sat outside at the table closest to the fan.The weather was beautiful that evening. Even if we hadn’t sat near the fan, it still would have been great. Temps had cooled down and there was a bit of a breeze.
The food was excellent. I checked the reviews before we went so I ordered the pimento cheese panini with spicy bacon and tomatoes, as recommended by several other reviewers. The add ons were only a buck extra and so worth it. The sandwich was great. I ordered potato salad as my side and it was equally as good. My boyfriend ordered the chips and salsa and my mother ordered the roast beef. I had a couple bites of their food and it was just as good.
My boyfriend went back in to grab another beer and brought us out two of the white chocolate, cherry cookies. They were soft, delicious, and just decadent enough without being too rich.
The crowd was just like the atmosphere here, very relaxed and mellow. Seating was pretty much full by the time we got our food but people started heading out when it got darker. I really can’t wait to go back again soon. Muddy Creek seems like such a great place.

I ordered a hot Italian and was very disappointed. I had to pull it apart to make sure that all the meat was there. The meat is sliced razor thin. The entire thing tasted like bread. Way overpriced foe what little you get. They also had a guy singing and playing guitar in the restaurant, the problem was it was so loud you could not even talk to someone next to you.
