Reviews
The Mother’s Margarita is excellent—perfectly balanced, refreshing, and clearly made with care. Not overly sweet, just smooth and done right.
Now the tacos… absolutely fantastic. Fresh ingredients, bold flavors, and cooked perfectly. You can taste the quality in every bite. This is the kind of food that keeps you talking about it after you leave.
We arrived early and waited for the rest of our party, but service was noticeably unorganized. It felt like they may have been short staffed, There was one busser running around trying to help everyone, while the rest of the staff appeared distracted and disengaged.. We placed our food order a few minutes before the rest of our party arrived. They ordered about 15 minutes after being seated, yet their food came out well before ours.
To make matters worse, incorrect dishes were brought to the table. While they gave us a few extra items to compensate, we ultimately never received everything we actually ordered. For a restaurant charging top dollar for Mexican food, the service should match the price point and it simply didn’t.
Attached is a photo of the $22+ torta we ended up taking home. I’ve never had a torta served with a salad piled on top like this, and it was not what I expected or wanted especially at that price. The “papas” were definitely not it, and the salad easily could have been served on the side instead of overwhelming the sandwich.
I would much rather support a local mom and pop spot where you leave feeling satisfied and taken care of than repeat this experience. I was embarrassed to have brought my family here for a special occasion, and sadly, I wouldn’t return.
P.S. If you’re charging $7 for chips, I would expect them to at least be warm.
Got to sample some of the new fish from Chef Felipe which was awesome. The food here is great and the service was excellent from our server Chad and the bar manager John.
Kept well fed and well served. It was good to have this kind of experience for my friend to make him feel the love of the community here.
Thank you Mother’s, I’ll be back of course.
Absolutely incredible! Mother’s Tacos is hands down one of the best hidden gems in Ventura. Thank you for coming to Ventura and upleveling our dining expeeience. The food is fresh, flavorful, and made with love — you can truly taste it in every bite. The fish tacos were perfectly seasoned, the salsas have just the right kick, and the portions are generous.
The staff is super friendly and welcoming, (GM Chris is awesome!) and the atmosphere has that laid-back Ventura vibe that makes you want to stay awhile. You can tell this place was built on passion for great food and good people.
We will be back.
We are so lucky to have Mothers in Ventura. I haven’t had a bad meal or drink here. The loaded fries are to die for and we love the community/family style dining option. I am also personally a huge fan of the aesthetic. Service has always been extremely polite and positive, and there truly is nothing better than the post-meal churro. Thank you, Mothers!!
When we arrived, we were told there was a 30-minute wait unless we found our own table. After seating ourselves, service felt disorganized and unfriendly from the start. Our server seemed irritated and every simple request — water, menus, utensils, or basic drink questions — felt like a confrontation.
We waited long periods for everything: drinks, water, plates, napkins, and even our kids’ food. We repeatedly had to flag someone down for basic items and were rarely checked on. Communication felt dismissive and the overall experience did not match the very high prices ($35–$45 entrées and $15 guacamole).
To be fair, the food and margaritas were very good. However, the service and overall management were extremely lacking, and for those prices you expect a completely different level of hospitality.
I will also say that after reading through other reviews, many of the negative experiences described were very similar to ours. That made our experience feel less like a one-off situation and more like an ongoing service issue.
If you want a great comparison, go to Corazon Cocina — similar menu, fantastic food, and consistently great service. Their beautiful outdoor patio has a charming European feel and the experience is night and day.
Sadly, despite enjoying the food, we would not return due to the service.
The chicharrón is a must on every visit. Perfectly crunchy, satisfyingly meaty, and paired with a green salsa that takes it over the top.
On my last visit, I had the Ribeye Polanco torta, and it tasted like home—only better. Every bite was flawless.
Whatever you do, save room for the churros. Sometimes we come here just for churros and cocktails. The dipping sauces take the churros to the next level, and the cocktails are creative, well-balanced, and genuinely delicious. Even the frozen drinks stand out—far from the gimmicky versions you find elsewhere.
The staff is welcoming and always on the move, and it’s clear that management prioritizes quality food and great service. The menu continues to evolve, which means there’s always something new (and exciting) to try.
