Amazingly fresh sushi. We ordered what our server recommended and it did not disappoint. We planned on going to Sansei but when we called at 3:30pm they said they were booked with reservations for the night. We called Monstera and they were happy to seat our party of 4 right when they opened at 5:30. Service was super friendly, a little slow as we waited for the green tea ice cream dessert but worth the wait. Again the food did not disappoint. The tuna tataki, the spicy tuna roll with crunchies and volcano roll were all delicious. And the bartender makes a fantastic Mai Tai!

Sushi was not good. Didn’t try the noodles so maybe those are ok??? The only reason this place is priced high is because of location, in an area where the stores are very nice. The sushi fell apart, didn’t taste good at all, and as a garnish with one of our rolls were slivers of raw onions?!?!?! Would not go back here for sushi. The waiters were really nice. So they have that going for them.

Very accommodating even though we had no reservation. Sitting at the sushi bar was awesome, and Brandon was the best! The sushi was delicious, and the atmosphere warm and inviting. Good value for price, especially the sushi rolls. Would definitely go back!

There wasn’t anything outstanding about this place that justified it’s high rating. We waited 5 minutes at the entrance before anyone tried us. The hostess who seated us was extremely rude. We didn’t have reservations but the place was half empty.

The food was good I would give that a 3.5 star. I had the local sashimi. It was fresh and melt in your mouth tender. I also ordered a side of roasted kabocha, although it came covered in a sugar glaze. It was alright but sweet on sweet pumpkin was a little much.

Dessert we did the fried banana, it would have been really good but the banana was like a raw potato, starchy and not sweet. Eh whatever

We enjoyed balcony dining while waiting for the free hula and fire dancers. We’d been there enjoying the shops, the giant palms and other places nearby during the afternoon. My wife had a sushi roll and a mixed drink. I had a seafood salad and Pinot Grigio. Service, taste and prices were just fine! We would love to go back again!

A fantastic experience here at Monstera. It was my first visit and this first impression went quite well. The fish was fresh and delicious, and the service was above and beyond what we were expecting. Even the owners were there working hard, ensuring that our experience was top-notch. One owner is the main sushi chef who manages the sushi bar. Wesley, the other owner, was interacting with us and other guests. A great guy with a down to earth personality.

Everything from the drinks and appetizers to the dessert was spectacular.

My wife and went here after reading the good reviews. Mistake. The only thing getting this place 2 stars was the gyoza and miso soup which are simple dishes but were really good. Our main course was a spier roll and volcano roll. They use way too much rice in making the rolls, very little shrimp, crab, tuna or whatever you get in your rolls. The flavor was just not there either along with tiny portions. For $75 for 2 people you could find better food elsewhere.

We had a very lackluster meal. Felt really over priced for the overall experience. Small things like paper napkins and the quality control of what comes to the table was lacking for the price point.

They have a nice drink menu and I had a saki that I enjoyed. Started with spicy Korean chicken which was good. Waitress was friendly.

I ordered a veggie roll. The main veg was avocado and they used the brown vieny part of the avocado that you throw in the trash when you cut up an avocado. It was also stuffed with micro greens that had brown spots and again would be the part you pick off and trash. Disapointing.

My husband had sushi and soup meal. It was alright, that’s about it.

Overall, we will not be too quick to return.

Ate here on our last trip to the Big Island. Food was outstanding. One of the best overall we’ve had on any of the islands over the years. Loved the sake recommendations too. My wife & I will definitely be back!

We had a few of rolls and one of the noodle dishes. A couple of the rolls were so wide that there really wasn’t a good way to eat it. I’d also say some of the sushi rolls might have been on the pricey side (we had to stop ourselves from accidentally ordering a $22 roll (shrimp tempura). Overall quite good.
