In my opinion, this is not authentic Mexican food. At least not from my experience from living near Mexico and visiting on many occasions. The food served at Monarca is fresh and good. The small restaurant is family friendly and very clean. The service was exceptional.

The food was really good. Started with chips/salsa/guacamole appetizer. Note no free chips & salsa. The salsa was served warm – very unique/yummy. Disappointed after paying for chips we weren’t offered more when we ran out and still had dips. Server was very efficient- but she was working whole restaurant so we didn’t get water refills. Enjoyed the Birria tacos. The music being played was overly loud and a little annoying. Nice clean restaurant. Overall would recommend the food.

Newly opened and very nice inside. We started with the guacamole, salsa and chips. The salsa was warm which I had never had before. It was very good. Lots of roasted vegetables and seasoned very well. Same with the guacamole. Lime, onion and cilantro right amount of salt. Very good. Could have used a few more chips because they ran out quickly but was not offered. The birria tacos were delicious. Meat seasoned very well. You can byob but they do charge a corking fee on beer which I’ve never seen before. You are not serving beer and you charge me for brining my own. Seems a little ridiculous. Overall the food was great and I highly recommend.

Monarca is such a welcome addition to Newport! It’s amazing to finally have some authentic Mexican food right on Broadway. The tacos are all perfect (the shrimp and birria with cheese) are my favorite, but, I haven’t been disappointed yet by any of them! Their dinner plates have all been delicious as well.

Every time I’m in there, the staff is so wonderful. Do yourself a favor and go check them out!

Worth noting that they are BYOB, so go pick up some cold beers and bring them along or just enjoy some tamarindo!

Loved everything about my experience. The lady who took my order was very pleasant. The birria tacos were one of the best I’ve had. The sauces were just as incredible. Also, the restaurant is very cute inside. (photo of my takeout order)

Ordered a 13$ chicken and cheese quesadilla and this is how much chicken and cheese actually came with it. It was so dry that I had to order a side of guacamole just to get it down. The quesadilla does not come with any sour cream (in fact, when asked they said they don’t even have sour cream in the restaurant), Guac, or sauce of any kind. My friend tried to order a cheese burger and they didn’t have any buns. We all got cheese quesadillas and they were all lacking in the actual cheese. 22$ for this quesadilla and a side of Guac. It was a cute place, just wish the food was worth what we paid for it.

Recently ordered take out from here so I can only speak to that though the restaurant interior looks very nice & comforting. I ordered the fish tacos & a side of the pico de gallo. The corn tortillas were definitely homemade & very good though I do like mine lightly pan seared. The slaw on the fish tacos was made fresh & very flavorful. The fish was nice & crispy. I ordered two tacos & it only came with a side of two sauces, green & red. Both were spicy & the tacos themselves had a bit of heat as well. On one of the tacos I added a bit of the green sauce & some pico de gallo & though I’m not one to be shy of spicy food it was a bit too much for my taste buds. The other tacos had just as is & enjoyed that bit of heat without the sauces or the pico de gallo. The pico de gallo is also homemade & very flavorful. My tacos were very good aside from being a bit spicy & would definitely return to try some of their other dishes. My only comment is to go a bit lighter on the degree of spicy flavor.

I had the enchiladas with the verde sauce and it was delicious. You could tell the sauce was homemade and the dish was made to order. My friend said the birra tacos were as good as anything she can get in SoCal. I highly recommend. It is BYOB, but they have a corkage free.
