Mom’s Special Cooking is one of those quiet North Austin gems you’re glad you didn’t overlook. Tucked into an old, unassuming building way south of Little Saigon/Chinatown off Lamar, it doesn’t advertise loudly — the food does that job.
We went vegetarian and let the enthusiastic owner guide the order, which was absolutely the right move. One dish featured delicate vermicelli noodles tossed with mixed vegetables in a savory brown sauce; the other paired vegetables and egg over rice. Both were beautifully balanced, comforting, and confidently seasoned — simple on the surface, deeply satisfying in execution.
Inside, the space is bright, clean, and welcoming, and the hospitality feels genuinely personal. This is Burmese home cooking done with care, not flash.
Low expectations turned into a memorable meal. We’ll be back — and next time, we’re letting Mom choose again.

WOW incredible! I was only recently introduced to Burmese food by some friends in San Fransisco, and I’m so glad we found Mom’s Special Cooking in Austin! The dry Shan noodle was so flavorful, the green tea salad had so many yummy textures, the salt and pepper dish and shrimp tasted like beer battered fish n chips with Chinese salt and pepper seasoning on top, and the Mohinga soup was so unique and comforting. And the Rainbow Ice dessert was very refreshing with so many flavors and textures. “Mom” is so sweet too, so warm and friendly.

Great authentic Burmese food with excellent quality and flavor. Everything we tried was delicious and tasted very authentic. The service was also very good—the staff were friendly, welcoming, and treated customers with genuine smiles and respect. Highly recommend this place if you’re looking for real Burmese cuisine.

Have you ever had Burmese food? Me neither! Until now, and it was sooooo good. I was so pleasantly surprised with the flavor, the spice, and the variety of foods in this cuisine. I honestly recommend just asking your waiter what to get because I was so clueless but everything we got was so good. Please support this local family business! It is a gem!

Very disappointing. I read reviews here before going to Mom’s but I was very unhappy with the service. We were looking for a special place to eat for Valentine’s Day. We tend to gravitate to small out of the way places. This fit the bill. The place itself was easy to miss as some here have said. We found it and had high hopes for it. Decor was cozy and it was mostly empty besides 2 other tables. We ordered some tofu spring rolls. They said they were out of them. So we got some Samosas instead. No complaints there. Crispy $
& Scrumptious samosas. Highly recommend. Hubby ordered the soup special with blood sausage and fish balls, it looked great. He said it tasted great. I was in the mood for soup, because it was raining and chilly out. I settled on a Kung Pao tofu dish. Which originally I thought they wouldn’t have because of the spring roll situation? But the guy wrote it down. BIG MISTAKE. I was left to wait awhile, after my hubby received his meal.I asked what was taking so long and they had forgotten to put in my order..Ok.. ok it’s fine, I said. A mere 10 min or so, my plate comes out. Rice looks wonderful yay! I’m excited for this. I notice most of the vegetables are raw still, especially the onion. It overwhelmed the whole dish. I tried to keep eating it. There was no sauce on the tofu. It looked like brown water. Maybe watered down sauce? Anyway, I just couldn’t eat it. It was upsetting for sure. We were not paying for an uneaten plate, so at least they were gracious enough to not charge us for it. In the end, I tried really hard to like it but honestly, wouldn’t come back even for the samosas. That was their saving grace. There are other places around the area that do much better and with the same price point. Choose wisely and if you do go, I hope it goes better for you. Would not recommend. 2/10

Very clean restaurant, and wonderfully friendly and accommodating staff with quick service. However, if you’re looking for good Pad Thai, this is just not the place. The dish was a nice portion with plenty of shrimp, but drowning in an overbearing sauce that really ruined it. Maybe the other menu items are better.
