Upon entering the parking lot off N.High I will admit the signage was a bit difficult to see but they’re located at the corner of the plaza next to Swan’s barbershop.
It’s a small modern style drop in location. There’s no public restrooms so please don’t be alarmed. They do have 2 nice tables with two chairs each for general seating or maybe a quick dine. There’s QR sticker codes on the windows that takes you to their online menu/ordering.
I love the modern look that they chose and the fact they included their history/ homage in their decorum.
I did ask the lady that serviced me if the extras I paid for (pie and sauces) were included and she glanced in the bag and said everything should be there. I expressed how I’d hate to get back across town and items are missed.
Well unfortunately I guess by her seeing the sauces she assumed my personal sweet potato pie was in there however it wasn’t.
I was pretty bummed because I was really looking forward to trying it and I had a feeling they might miss something.
Now as far as the food… BABY somebody did their big one with it.
Although the mac could use some improvement my fish and personal favorite candied yams were divine!!!
I love their signature sauce!!!
I’m craving their candied yams so bad that I want it again today!!!
I do wish on DoorDash they’d change the vegetarian sides platter to where you can select two of the same options. Example: two sweet potatoes, one mac. It forces you to choose one of each from the choices that are available that day.
Sometimes the candied yams aren’t available to order online as their menu seems to be tailored to certain days and subject to availability.
This is my second time patronizing this particular location. In comparison to the first time this time was certainly better. The last time I ordered the fish was overcooked and yams weren’t as good. If they can master consistency and a better mac recipe it’ll be a game changer.
I will continue to support them
My 2nd visit was for a sick friend (hospital). She ordered the catfish, greens, mac & cheese & cornbread. I drove the food over 30 minutes in rush hour traffic & it was still warm. This food really lifted her spirits & the staff kept committing on the great smell. She loved the crunchiness & flavor of the fish (even without their special fish sauce). She enjoyed the creamy mac&cheese with the slight crust of cheese mixed in. She scarred down the greens with the smoky turkey commenting on the taste reminding her of her mother’s greens. She was surprised to see the pretty light brown square of cornbread tucked it. The flavor has a slight sweetness is a nice addition to the veggies.
The 2nd visit was more “welcoming”, not the 1st one was bad. The 2nd one was more “personable” & they were busier (4:30 vs noon).
This location is a welcome addition of restaurant choices in Clintonville.
We had mac n cheese, green beans, yams, baked beans, JoJo’s, and cornbread for sides. Full bellies for sure.
Highly recommend checking them out.
Seating is limited (2 tables for 2 each); it looks like their customers mainly do take-out.
Catfish fried hard with a side of greens and slaw! Perfectly seasoned, fried to perfection, greens meaty not salty, the slaw fresh not wilted, and the small unexpected square of homemade corn bread were exactly like my grandma and aunties. I felt the love! I walked in gave them my order…there is a wait because they were hoppin busy!( said 25 min more like 15 min) I did not mind, went next door to Graceland shopped, got a text that my food was ready. It was perfect! Those gentlemen who cooked Friday night Nov 7th…yall know what ya doing!! Those hostess/cashiers handled they business on that front line!! Hey, cuz we were all family that day for sure! Yasss!! ( there are 2 cocktail tables with chairs but this is not a sit in restaurant, but I’m sure with their hospitality they will serve you…lol)
The cornbread was extremely dry to the point it completely crumbled apart when a bite was taken. The rice and the hush puppies both had great flavor, but again, were extremely dry like maybe everything had been made ahead and was sitting around too long. I really wanted to love this place but it just didn’t seem fresh.
