Ended with the lava cake, absolutely outstanding.
Already planning to go back for the omakase. 10/10 experience.
However, the Japanese food was decent, not the best, didn’t taste authentic, but more like americanized Japanese fare. You don’t get a good bang for your buck either, as portion sizes are small. The chicken karaage is usually my favorite appetizer to order at Japanese restaurants, but the portion sizes here much too small, and the karaage did have a good crisp to it. But they do give a considerable amount of dipping sauce to go with it. The miso soup also had a watered down taste, the miso flavor was not as strong or bold, although I did like the tofu pieces in the soup! The positives were definitely their cocktails and desserts, I enjoyed the Tanuki Tail cocktail and their Yuzu sorbet and Matcha Cheesecake!
I would mostly just come back just for their bar, dessert, and overall vibes.
It was my birthday dinner with my husband and my boy who’s 10 years old starting to eating sushi, and he is a quite picky eater but he loves Modan Restaurant food. Staffs were very attentive and friendly. I will definitely comeback try other food in the future.
I highly recommend you must try omakase and tasty cocktails! Everything was perfect except when we check out didn’t waive extra parking fees.
Flavor-wise, the food was below average. Nothing was memorable, refined, or surprising, which is disappointing given how much care and precision omakase is supposed to represent. The fish did not stand out in quality, and the bites lacked depth, balance, and creativity. For the cost, we expected exceptional sourcing, technique, and flavor…none of which were present.
To be fair, the service and staff were excellent. Everyone was polite, attentive, and clearly doing their best to provide a positive experience. Unfortunately, strong service alone cannot justify the price when the food itself does not deliver.
Overall, the experience felt significantly overpriced for what was served. There are many other places in the area that offer far better omakase or sushi experiences at this price point or less. Based on our visit, I would not recommend Modan for omakase.
$150 for just six courses — and one of them is dessert? The ingredients were extremely basic. No uni, no wagyu, and they even removed toro from the menu. For that price, the value just isn’t there.
At this point, I’d rather buy a train ticket to NYC and find a small spot that actually serves quality fish.
Americans — treat yourselves. Go eat something better.
The price was $150 per person, which felt too high for the overall experience.
Our first impression of the service wasn’t great. The tablecloth at our first table was not clean, and we had to ask to change seats. Also, we ordered still water, but the waitress poured it and then took the bottle away, later attempting to refill from tap water. We had to stop her and ask for the bottled water we originally ordered the bottle should have been left on the table.
However, during the service, one of the servers, Jibril, gave us such a positive energy. I’m sure there is great potential for him, and I truly hope the entire restaurant team can learn from his attitude and the way he treated us with guest .
First, service is just inconsistent. As an example, the second to last time we were there, they offered us hand towels. The last time, they didint, but offered it to the other tables. Another example, consistently gettimg dishes at odd times. One guest will finish their meal while another is waiting for their meal happened every time.
Cleanliness. Chop stick holder was dirty and we noticed it as we were being seated, so whomever set the table, they decided that it was OK to leave it as is. Its one of those things you cant miss because you have to place the chopsticks on it. As an FYI, the holder is pure white.
We had a miso cod, small bone. Chef’s selection of dry aged sushi, small piece of bone. Like, that NEVER happens even at cheap Sushi restaurants. And the chefs dry aged selection of sushi lacks that deep buttery umami. Instead, its replaced with a more fishy, dry, and inferior texture. I thought my first experience was a miss but the second time I ordered the same dish, confirmed it. And honestly, I’ve never experienced sushi where I felt the chef goes out of their way to give you a small almost micro version of sushi like their hoarding it to have enough for the rest of the night.
I will say though, I’ve had all their deserts and its always been very good.
When we arrived, we were welcomed by very warm hosts and a dining room that was bustling with energy and excitement. We sat down and were immediately greeted by our server, who introduced Modan to us, asked about any allergies or dietary restrictions, filled our glasses, and took our drink orders. We tried the lychee martini and espresso martini, along with some mocktails and a sake flight, which was very exciting.
We decided to follow the izakaya-style recommendation and order our food as shareables rather than individual entrées to taste as much as possible. Throughout the entire dinner, the manager and many servers came by to check on us and chat with us and other tables in the restaurant, which created a very warm and caring atmosphere.
We started with the king salmon carpaccio, shishito peppers, and spicy tuna rice cakes—signature dishes at Modan. These are dishes that anyone could enjoy, whether you are a sushi fanatic or someone who hasn’t dined at a sushi restaurant before. The salmon was very light, with gentle and familiar flavors from the crispy onions and truffle aioli. The shishito peppers were lightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, packed with flavor, and the yuzu miso added a citrusy kick. The spicy tuna rice cakes were especially fun to eat; I loved the contrast between the soft tuna on top and the crispy rice cake underneath.
Next, we decided to try more cold dishes from the sushi chefs. We had the tai usuzukuri, which was fresh, lightly sweet, and umami-forward with yuzu olive oil and a kick of ume wasabi. We also tried the Dragon Ball Z roll, one of Modan’s specialty rolls, made with snow crab, freshwater eel, and tobiko. The craftsmanship and artistry behind the rolls and cold dishes were amazing. I enjoy sometimes eating a piece in one bite to experience all the flavors at once, and other times taking it apart piece by piece to appreciate each component.
We also tried the uni, I so excited to finally taste it. I chose sashimi style and I immediately fell in love—uni is such a unique food and was presented beautifully. The gentle sweetness, savory, and oceanic flavor, and soft texture are not something you come across often in the food world. I told the manager how much I loved it, and he offered suggestions for other ways I could try it.
My favorite dish from the sushi bar was the toro caviar. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was incredible. The bread on the outside was fluffy and slightly sweet, the tuna inside was fresh and flavorful, and the caviar on top completely melted in my mouth. I was genuinely sad when I finished it.
After that, we decided to try their famous tableside tomahawk. Our server explained all of our options and walked us through their dry-aging process and how it enhances the flavor and texture of the meat. We were so excited. They brought out an assortment of sauces and spices to enjoy with the steak. When the tomahawk arrived on a cart, they put on an incredible presentation—I won’t spoil the surprise, but it’s absolutely part of the experience.
For dessert, we wanted to try everything. We ordered the matcha cheesecake, crème brûlée, Modan lava cake, and the passionfruit kakigori. Even after the tomahawk, dessert disappeared very quickly. We especially loved the kakigori, which was a unique dessert made with mint, lychee, soft shaved ice, mango condensed milk, and passionfruit syrup poured tableside by the server.
I want to note that every single dish that came to our table was explained in detail by a server, which made the experience even more exciting and showed how highly trained the staff are. Fresh plates were brought out as we moved from hot dishes to sushi to steak to dessert. Everyone worked together seamlessly to ensure we were taken care of and had a fun, memorable night.
