Let’s be clear: the catfish was fine. Midwest freezer-to-fryer fine. Not bad, not amazing — just decent enough to eat if the vibe wasn’t trash. But the service? Cold, short, and full of attitude. The kind that kills your appetite and makes you question why you’re spending your hard-earned money somewhere you’re clearly not wanted.
And to top it off, they’re cash-only — an extra layer of inconvenience that doesn’t help when the hospitality is already lacking. I guess I been in the south too long were we have fresh fish and southern hospitality.
Good food can’t save a place when the people serving it act bothered by customers. Nostalgia only goes so far — respect still matters.
Bye bye Childhood memories are better left alone
Update: Still the best catfish in the area and super friendly and welcoming!
The place is a hole in the wall… Cash Only & not much to look at, but I’ve been happy w/every walleye dinner I’ve eaten!! Their tartar sauce is good, but I like it best w/cocktail sauce! s);oD
I do like the layout, I go down to Florida a couple of times a year and this place is very much reminds me of some of the spots you might find down south along the Gulf.
The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the menu.
I feel bad for not knowing about this place as it’s been here 19 years, and is family owned..
Originally, I was going to have a taco or walleye dinner, then swap sides for Okra, I love perfectly cooked okra, sadly, I’ve only found one place within about 60 Mi of here that can do it right, sadly, that us not an option.
I would suggest offering a side options with okra, hush puppies, mac and cheese…
If the walleye is good then I will come back and try the okra and update my review. But since it is just me this evening I am only going to be sampling the walleye itself.
The walleye only comes fried (breaded) and the portion is generous. I ordered the regular, came with four strips.
Portion size is good, but these would be more of a walleye finger, vs fillet, and that is ok..
This is perfectly done, flaky, moist, excellent flavor. The breading is perfectly done there’s no doughy-ness.
The tail quickly tapers into being more breading than meat, one larger fillet would be more preferable,
I suspected, and they confirmed, the tartar sauce is store bought. It’s fine though..
Overall, it is a good dish…
As far as rating.
The fish was delicious my only issue and again it is strictly a preference, is that I would like there to be more meat, more fillet than finger. Most people ordering this for the first time would expect a breaded fillet so because of that I’m going to give it 4/5
The service and the atmosphere were great, and if you are like me and you travel to do food reviews or if you just like to travel, and you have found yourself down south at a Fish Shack in the past, this place will be kind of nostalgic, and that is awesome. 5/5.
Overall I’m going to give it a 4 out of 5.
