In 1985, Mike Gullat and Ed Cook worked together in the Insurance industry when an opportunity came up to purchase an established barbecue restaurant in Phenix City, Alabama. They had both frequented this fine establishment and thought they might have a go at it. In fact, the food was so good they knew they couldn’t come up short. Over the years they added new recipes, tweaked the old and after many awards and lots of full bellies, they expanded from that one dandy little barbecue haven to several dandy barbecue havens. They also expanded the business to offer catering for large or small events and pretty much everything in-between.

I ordered 2 plates, one pork, one smoked turkey. The pork is good and tender but the mac n cheese side order could use some magic.
The turkey plate…well, I’ll just say it…the turkey was equivalent to deli turkey, no smoked flavor at all. It’s also served cold. It would be better off made as a sandwich with mayo.
I’ll add that the bbq Brunswick stew was meaty and flavorful but I’ve had better.
I would give them another try, sticking to pork.

You know good and darn well it’s going to be good bbq when you walk in and see their sweet tea in a trash can. (A clean one you sickos) The menu has a wide variety of different smoked meats, and ways to have those meats. Chipped, chopped and sliced for the pork. We tried a little of everything because how could you not in an authentic place like this? Ribs were delicious with real smoked coloring and taste. Smoked half chicken has been cooked to perfection out back where they chop their own wood to smoke. Prices are incredible for the amount of food you get especially in todays world. Service is friendly and quick. We will be back!

Great homestyle BBQ place with a welcoming atmosphere. Prices are extremely reasonable and the sauce is good. Not a 5 star because the brisket was good but lacked moisture and flavor. Pork was on point.

The service seemed fine. My order was taken and repeated back to me. I thought everything was fine. I’ve always gotten good food. Today was a complete and total disaster. I am very disappointed. If this is what you guys are doing, I’m not sure about a return visit. I ordered brisket and requested that the fat be trimmed. It was trimmed alright 🙁

I’m mostly disappointed with the portions this place offers. If you order takeout like I did today and get something like curly fries, they will barely give you anything in the to go box. My favorite thing to order here is Ed’s Special but much like their sides they barely give you any food and the sandwich is usually pretty small. It doesn’t feel like you always get your money’s worth here.

I’ve been eating here for years. The chopped pork sandwich I had was the best I’ve ever had. The pork was juicy and the flavor was amazing. It was so good that I bought another sandwich to take home. The ribs and coleslaw were also very good.

I placed a catering order for my job through Ezcatering. Let’s just say it was a major fail. We ordered eleven plates, the chicken was dry as a desert bone, and we were missing items from the order. I was so disappointed because I was tasked with this, and I boasted about how good the food was only to be disappointed (I haven’t been there in three years). Never again!

Wife, daughter and I stopped by for lunch while out thift shopping. Second time to eat here. Wife had Brunswick stew. Daughter had pulled pork sandwich, she liked the sweet and mustard sauces mixed together, my favorite as well. I had the all meat rib plate, 4 bones and 3 slices of bread, plus a chili dog all the way. It was all delicious. I do not eat bread.

Stopped here on a drive back from Destin FL, was craving great food after a week of hotel food.
The building is so comfortable and the inside so welcoming and homely! The food was SO GOOD! The best BBQ Ribs I’ve ever had! Brunswick stew, Coleslaw, Corn Nuggets— everything was delicious! It is the BBQ place of Alabama and they could win so many BBQ shows! Love THIS PLACE!
