My first time here as well as my first experience with a chef’s tasting menu. It was a great time, the server was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. I did the 6 course tasting menu, told them anything I didn’t want and the chef provided fantastic dishes. The courses came at a good pace and I did leave full. I was a little sad that duck was not on the menu for the evening but I am looking forward to returning to try other dishes.

Amazing, clever food and genuinely caring service. The 8-hour roast my mother got was the best I’d ever had, and the mushroom and spinach wellington that came with my KC strip was just awesome. Everything was so great. There were 4 of us who went here before Wicked, and it was very much worth it. I only wish we had time for dessert.

It was our first experience at Michael Smith. Nancy was very nice and flexible with our tasting menu choices. She was also excellent with wine pairings. The swordfish was my favorite dish – very succulent and flavorful. Melted in your mouth. The fried scallops were also delicious. A couple of dishes came out that were like warm, that’s why I give four stars. We would definitely go back!

Kansas City Gem. This is one of our favorite date night spots because we know the atmosphere and presentation will always be an intimate one. You don’t have to dress up–you can go trendy/biz casual and fit in just fine. I’ve always worn jeans with a nice shirt and never felt out of place. We dined here on Saturday night and I had the agnolotti, scallops and pecan torte. Our waiter was amazing and his recommendations were spot on. Yes, it is expensive but personally, I will always pay more for an unforgettable dining experience and that’s what we get every time from Michael Smith.

The food is ridiculous, and I mean that in a good way. Sirloin steak dinner. Pork roast dinner. Amazing. The presentation was lovely. We don’t know much about wine, so we followed our server’s suggested pairing and it was great. I didn’t care for the rolls, but that was a personal preference (my boyfriend ate enough of them to convince me there was nothing wrong with them). Service was great, nice atmosphere, blah blah blah the important thing is that the food was incredible.

Michael Smith, and the chef the restaurant is named after, offered up a fantastic evening for my wife and I. We splurged with wine and the 4-course dinner, which allows you smaller portions from the main dining list and not just a prix fixe menu. Our waitress was confident, knowledgeable, and offered opinions when asked, but not pretentious. She was actually gracious with an extra couple of glasses of wine when the 2nd entrees took a bit longer than expected. Chef Smith also came out to check on the dishes he had prepared and to ensure that everything was up to par. While the price is certainly steep, the food and the experience justifies the splurge. We won’t hesitate to be back the next time we’ve got a little cash to burn.

Michael Smith is probably the best restaurant in KC. I would have given 4 stars based on the food alone, but I am Italian and I am very picky about restaurants saying “Italian cuisine”. Knowing the effort they put into it, the ingredients that are clearly of superior quality, the staff that is super extra nice, including his wife, me and my wife loved it! Let me be clear…by 4 stars for the food I am being extra picky. Still, this is a place to try and go as often as possible, since their modern take on Italian food is really unique in the area!
