When their Carne Asada burrito comes with beans there is a LOT to be said about a taco shop in Southern California that puts beans in their Carne Asada burrito, WHO DOES THAT? I don’t understand how anyone can RUIN such a BASIC DISH . I order the Carne Asada burrito without beans and it came with Guacamole and Cilantro and Onions. The order was made quickly. 1st bite and all I tasted was burnt smoke meat. Like when meat is on the grill but comes out tasting like smoke. The meat was bland without any flavor, the green and red salsa were lacking in flavor also. The flour tortilla also tasted burnt. The whole burrito was dry and disappointing. I had never been to this place and decided to try it. I should have stuck to my usualy spot down the street at Trompos, their Carne Asada burrito comes with guacamole and Pico and very tasty. I usually always go for their California burritos Wednesday special for $12 . I paid almost $15 for a burrito that I gave to my dogs after 2 bites.

Service was excellent. The food was had good flavor but I was expecting more meat pieces in my chicharron plate. There was literally only 2 small pieces. The beans had good flavor and the rice was kind of meh. Overall it was decent. I probably would have enjoyed it more if I got a burrito or torta.

UPDATE.
Ordered a Barbacoa Burrito the next day and it was delicious! Meat was juicy and flavored well and it was a good size.
10% military discount is also a huge plus.

Ordered the fajitas which includes beans, rice, cilantro, guac and homemade tortillas. Truth be told, the food was very average – nothing memorable. However, the fresh handmade tortillas are some of the best I’ve ever had. Also, the service was stellar. I would try it again but would order something else.

Don’t recommend the rolled tacos.

Been a while since I’ve been here so decided to start with their rolled tacos. Probably the worst rolled tacos I’ve ever had in SD county. Small, super thin with very little to know lettuce or tomato. Watered down guac, tiny tacos over cooked you can tell they used prior days ingredients and were expensive and of course got the runs too /:
Wish I would have taken a pic to show.

I will probably try a burrito or regular tacos one more time to give this place another chance.

This is a small taco shop that offers a small but flavorful menu to pick from. The prices are good for the portions and flavors.

I ordered 3 tacos and a basket of tortilla chips. Adobada, Carne Asada, and Cabeza

– Drinks

• Various Mexican sodas
• No Beer

– Corn Tortillas

• Tortillas are hand made in house and have a good thickness to hold the juicy meats and fillings.

• Tortillas Chips are store bought tortillas that they deep fry themselves.

– Meats

• Cabeza was very tender with a fatty marrow texture to it. It was good with the sauces but on its own could use some salt or seasoning to enhance the flavor of the meat.

with
Cilantro & Onions

• Adobada On its own was good, tender, full of flavor and not dry. This was the best of the three.

with
Guac Cilantro & Onions

• Carne Asada was good. TJ style for sure. On its own felt dry compared to the others but the meat was good and had a crispness it it.

with
Guac Cilantro & Onions

– Sauces

• Red has a good smoky flavor and a mild spicy kick. It had good flavor and I ate this mostly with the chips instead of the Borracho salsa.

• Green has a good tomatillo flavor and blended well together. Very well made. I prefer a spicy sauce but kept eating this one with the chips too.

• The Borrcho Salsa for the chips I’m not a fan of. It has a certain flavor to it that I can’t get use to.. but it looks good and it’s chunky.

Overall I enjoyed the meal and will return again to try their other menu items.

This place has always been a long time favorite of mine. I originally discovered it when I used to work in the area many years ago. I no longer work nearby and don’t exactly live close by either, but still go out of my way to make the occasional trip.

That says something considering I must pass by something like 100 other Mexican restaurants on my way there.

Everything I’ve tried on the menu is good, but do yourself a favor and get the mulitas If you haven’t tried them already.

Hope in the wall…exactly what I like to find when on vacation. Especially Mexican food. Although it wasn’t the best I’ve had, the beans were definitely worth mentioning tho. It had a hint of chorizo. It was delicious. We ordered cabeza tacos and it was super tender. The chilaquiles was good. I had it with verde sauce and carne asada. Everyone around was Hispanic and mostly were eating menudo. Must be a good place for it!

Been coming here for years—this is the first time where all three of us were disappointed with our food. The “caldo the res” was greasy, not lots of meat, the meat that it did have was touch and also with lots of mushy fat meat”. Not a hearty soup at all—one piece of potato, a big piece of cabbage, one carrot, 2 small pieces zucchini. And to mention the blandness! The carne asada fries, were not hit, mushy fries, tough bits of carne asada, cheap cheese—the cheese didn’t even melt, the gordita was the only good thing.
This picture says a lot—when you aren’t crazy about a plate, at least you eat the meat—you never waste good carne asada. Go to Colimas on University. It’s further but you’ll see what a caldo de res should look and taste like.
