Men in the Kitchen to open in downtown York PA this January
Reviews
MEN in the Kitchen did not disappoint. From the moment I walked in, the vibe was right—welcoming, lively, and just a good time all around. The drinks were on point (strong, flavorful, and well-made), and the food? Absolutely delicious. Everything tasted fresh, well-seasoned, and made with care.
The energy of the place really makes it special—great music (KALANI was
the bartender and ran the show) , friendly staff, and an atmospherthat makes you want to stay, laugh, and order one more drink. This is definitely a spot for good food, good drinks, and good vibes. I had a great time and will 100% be back. Highly recommend if you’re in the Harrisburg area
Was expecting a fuller house. But was shocked how how few folks were in there. I was thinking. My sons was just lonely and the food was sub par. Was shockingly wrong. I was given a fair size piece of corn bread. Which was warm , moist, and a sweetness that only proper cornbread has. Reminded me of home. At this point. I was fully interested. I got two wings and two pieces of catfish.. the wing sauce is made in house.. OH MY GOD. what is that stuff. It has to have crack in it. So GOOD. I mean GOOD. JO JO’s pizza in Elizabethville has like 47 different wings. I had them all. And wings were god teir compared to any other wing I had.. And this was for free?
I was had a menu but a friendly and attentive waitress. My son order the shrimp po boy, and i followed up with the cajun pasta with crab. Both were totally on point. Will admit the cajun pasta while made with ALOT of real crab. could have used a little bit more of old bay. But thats just me. We washed it down with the Island Henny, royal punch. ( warning way tasty, and the bar doesnt hold back on the shots, drink one if driving)
Since I had dinner before coming here, I was feeling like a fat dragon. And then that waitress informed us, That the desserts were peach cobbler with ice cream and home made sweet potato pie. ( owner’s mother recipe she said.) I looked at my wife, and she got the peach cobbler with ice cream, which was tasty. But the ice cream would have been better if it was vanilla bean. and not just vanilla. But still tasty. But the show stopper was the pie. If you are from the south and eaten this pie. or made it. you KNOW the texture, the flavor, and how much work goes into making it. Its like a southern cheesecake. a dish made with love. Other then the crust which had the flavor of store bought. the pie itself totally made up for it. It was almost perfect. and for something made in the north. it was perfect. If you get a chance. Check this place out. The food is great, the place is clean. and even with a game on and a small crowd was around the bar. it was quiet enough to have a normal conversation. Its truly a place that is perfect for a night out.
Atmosphere: It’s hard to determine what theme they’re aiming for. It’s too bright to feel intimate and lacks enough decor to be festive. They only have high-top tables (which my mother has trouble getting into). Not having any booths also limits the possibility of an intimate or private dinner. The random TV placement and background music all seemed out of place.
Service & Ordering: They offer printed menus, but they encourage you to order from your phone with a $5 discount. The issue is that everything ordered via the app ended up costing more than what’s on the printed menus—$1 here, $2.50 there. We ended up saving about a dollar using the app. The food took a long time to arrive, despite the restaurant being relatively empty; there were only two other tables when we arrived, so the long wait was inexplicable. When our order was unusually delayed, I said, “It’s fine. This means our food will be hot and fresh.” I was wrong.
The Food: The mac and cheese (pictured) was slightly above room temperature and clearly had been sitting out for hours. The lack of any seasonings in the mac and cheese is baffling. Even some fast food chains have better mac and cheese! The greens (pictured) tasted as if they came straight from a can. Don’t get me wrong—canned greens can be good if they’re seasoned well. But they didn’t even attempt to season these; they just came straight from the can into the bowl. It’s possible they were reheated at some point, but I couldn’t tell.
The Fried Smashed Potato (pictured) is a great idea, but poorly executed and not worth the calories. The Fried Corn on the Cob (pictured) was the best among the sides, but that’s not saying much. It’s the only side I’d consider trying again. The Cuban Sandwich (pictured) should be a flavor medley with roasted pork as the star, but the generous layer of mustard was overpowering. The ham overshadowed the pork flavor. It turned into more of a “Grilled Ham and Mustard Sandwich” with some roasted pork and cheese.
I was really looking forward to The Sunken Crab Cake (pictured), which is a Crab Cake in Seafood Bisque! The crab cake was good but not great. It was not good enough to order again. The garlic bread slices that came with it were more like rubber discs than bread. Ugh. The bisque should have been served hot with steam rising, but it was only warm and bland. No restaurant claiming to be Cajun-American should serve such bland food!
The Verdict: I don’t understand how Men in the Kitchen maintains a 4.8-star rating. The dining experience is barely a step above fast food, just at a much higher price. I’m giving it two stars, which I consider generous. This place could be good, maybe even excellent, with a little effort. But as of now, I can’t recommend it.
I have officially found it here. Men In The Kitchen has by far the best wings I’ve ever had in my life. And I’ve been to a lot of places and had wings.
Perfectly cooked right amount of crunch very juicy and big meaty wings. alAnd their in house made sauce well words can’t even explain how good it is.
I’m just sad I live 10 hrs from this special place.
Thursday night is wing night and you also receive free wine
If you are in the area this is a must go to.
