I enjoy eating at Mel’s! Staff is always amazing, FOOD is always hot, fresh and delicious! When my husband is in the hospital across the street, I always go to Mel’s for my food. Mmmmm, the tomatoe soup and grilled cheese is excellent and my other favorite is the short rib nachos. Everything is good but those 2 items I get everytime when im out there. The fresh vegetables that came with my steak dinner was sooooooo good. The steak and vegetables were Cooked to perfection And dont forget about dessert. There chocolate cake was very moist and so yummy! If you have not been there, your missing out!

Stopped by this spot for breakfast and had a good experience. The place has a really nice vibe and the ambiance is great. The staff was friendly and polite, which made the visit even better.
The food was tasty — nothing over the top, but well prepared and it definitely hit the spot. Overall, it was a positive experience and a solid choice if you’re looking for a nice breakfast in the area. (Little bit expensive)

I stopped by Mel’s Diner on Van Ness this morning for breakfast, and it was a great experience overall. If you’re looking for that classic old-school diner feel, this is the place to go. From the vintage decor to the friendly service, Mel’s delivers a nostalgic yet solid breakfast experience that hits the spot. I ordered an omelet with home fries and toast, and it did not disappoint. The omelet was fluffy and packed with flavor, the potatoes were crispy yet tender, and the toast was served warm with butter – the perfect comforting breakfast. The portions were decent-sized, enough to leave me full but not overly stuffed. Mel’s isn’t the cheapest breakfast option in SF, but given the portion sizes and the fact that it’s a classic, well-known diner, I’d say it’s worth the splurge every now and then. You’re paying for a mix of quality, nostalgia, and convenience, and I was happy with my meal. What I love about Mel’s is the retro diner ambiance – it really transports you back in time with its old-school decor, jukebox vibes, and cozy booths. Service was friendly and quick, making for a relaxed and enjoyable breakfast experience. If you’re craving a classic diner breakfast with generous portions and a nostalgic feel, Mel’s on Van Ness is a solid choice. It’s a little on the pricey side, but for the quality and experience, I’d definitely come back.

The best corned beef hash I have had to date. But to be honest I have only been to 4 or 5 spots that didn’t just open a can and say presto corned beef. With that said its the best on a short list but dang it was sooooo good. My o ly real.grip is portion size and thats just me. 6/5 on flavor. The waiter was good and the place was nice and cozy on the inside. The location across the street from the hospital is a definite plus.

I had to go in and sit down. I waited for more than 18 minutes and nobody came to offer me service. Terrible service, and the customers there don’t matter; the staff’s conversation is more important than customer service. I can’t comment on the food because I wasn’t served. Wow, if you don’t want to have a bad experience, don’t go there.

The food was okay but nothing special. When we got in there that day, there was a smell of a burnt pan or something stinking up the restaurant. We ate there anyway. Cause it gets pretty good ratings. The patty met was just a hamburger patty on rye bread and didn’t fill the bun like a paddy melt should. The taste was good, though, just kinda thick butter. Nice cold beers, though. And the prices were as good as any place else around there.

AMBIENCE: Haven’t been to a Mel’s in awhile so I thought this place was something different lol This location is decorated nicely like a retro diner with a darker/warmer kind of vibe.
FOOD: Food came out pretty quick. Got spaghetti & it wasn’t too bad, good portion size & the meatballs tasted really good. My mom got the fish & chips & that was a no for her. It was obvious that they were frozen & not fresh. The vanilla milkshake was my favorite part!
OVERALL: Chose this place because it’s attached to the hotel I stayed at & it had a door directly leading to the hotel lobby. An okay option if you’re in the area & don’t feel heading out at night or ordering food off an app.

Honestly a pretty good upscale diner. It has a really great and knowledgeable staff. A bit pricey honestly. The grilled cheese was $15, it was definitely goood. But a bit pricey, but at least it came with fries or tomato soup. I’ll comeback, but this isn’t exactly a cheap meal.

I arrived to Mel’s kitchen with friends. It took the server Alex forever to come to our table to greet us and to take our order. We finally ordered. We ended up waiting a while for the first entree. In which the food came out late. I observed Alex moving the food from one side of the window to the other side. He acknowledged me watching him move the food and still let the food sit in the window getting cold. Apparently, the crew was more occupied with celebrating an employee birthday than making sure my friends and I got our food. For that matter, not making sure my friend who just had a kidney transplant, got his food prepared properly. Afterwards,we observed the cooking crew laughing as if all of this was funny. I don’t know if the server and the crew didn’t care to give us good service because we were obviously gay. For whatever reason it was not called for them to treat us in a rude manner!! I was very upset!!
