Mekong District – Nyack

Social Profile:

Mekong District focuses on dishes influenced by family recipes but also inspired by different world cuisines. Unlike other area Vietnamese restaurants, Mekong District is not your traditional Vietnamese fare. We aspire to bring influences from different Asian and Western cuisines into Vietnamese cooking. While you may find staples such as pho and grilled rice and vermicelli dishes, Sriracha Edamame, Viet Carpaccio, Lamb Shank, MD Steak and Coconut Mussels are definitely not Vietnamese. But fair warning, some dishes are based on chef’s inspiration and may not stay on the menu for long.

Twists on traditional Vietnamese cuisine, plus fusion dishes & chef’s specials at this cozy option.

Exceptional and authentic Vietnamese fare. Can’t believe we’ve dined in so many restaurants in Nyack but somehow missed this one till recently! The ambiance feels like an antique shop, or a quaintly furnished cafe. Since we arrived a few minutes before they opened for lunch, we caught a glimpse of the owner/chef – a cheerful Vietnamese man – as he walked into the kitchen, while all the waiting staff were not Vietnamese. When we asked for fresh red chillies to go with our meal, our waiter told us that the owner would pop them like candies, while one small taste would cause him unbearable pain :-). We ordered vegetarian Mekong roll. The portion was pretty substantial – I can imagine myself getting full on that alone. Unfortunately there aren’t many vegetarian choices, so I broke my diet and accepted the waiter’s recommendation of garlic noodle, and gave half of the crawfish and shrimp to my husband. I loved the bouncy, chewing, flavorful flat noodles, while my husband enjoyed the grilled honey-glazed chicken platter. We’ll definitely come back to try other dishes!

Solid Pho, with a really cool atmosphere. We ordered duck pho, combo pho and Mekong Roll.

Mekong Roll- Very good on flavor, a little small for the price but a nice starter. We added a bit of the Hoison to the peanut sauce which helped to add a bit of depth to the flavor.

Pho- very tasty and fresh. Portions were a bit small and we wish they gave us more in terms of fresh veg to go with the pho. The combo was a bit light on meat for our liking but flavors were there and quite enjoyable. Broth was the star of the show, and while we wish there were more of both proteins we enjoyed our meals.

Service- Servers were kind and checked in frequently but not too frequently.

Overall- we enjoyed our lunch very much, the environment was quiet and relaxed. It looks like a great happy hour spot as well, one we will definitely be checking out.

TLDR- Cool Atmosphere, Great Service, Tasty Food, Small Portions.

Completely disrespectful silver wear is being presented to the guess dirty, horrible customer service as well, the quite older lady that works there (Asian lady) has no manners to her guest, she thinks with the intent of needing a tip in order to serve people properly (Greed)

Delicious food! Fresh ingredients, unique flavors and good portions. There was a small mistake with our order but it was okay. We enjoyed choosing different beers the beer taps. The place is nice and caters to groups wanting to play games and relax for a while. We’ll definitely be back!

Overall, this was a solid restaurant, conveniently located in downtown Nyack adjacent to the village municipal parking lot. The menu is pretty authentic but also includes many Asian fusion dishes. In general, the dishes felt like a hit or miss.

We ordered 3 appetizers, all of which were okay but not really impressive:
– Green Papaya Salad: The vegetables were pretty fresh, but the shrimp was overcooked and didn’t taste very fresh.

– Duck Bao Bun: The buns were soft and the duck was well-cooked, but it was pretty bland overall and definitely could have had packed in more flavor.

– Mekong Roll with BBQ grounded shrimp: These wraps tasted fresh and were well-wrapped, but the ratio of vermicelli noodles to meat / veggies was off. There was not enough meat and veggies, which made it taste kind of flavorless overall.

For the entree, I ordered the Triple Treat Fajita, which I would definitely recommend as an authentic dish to try! The meats were cooked very well— extremely juicy, tender, and flavorful— and they came in good portions too! However, the vegetable portions were much skimpier, and I wish they provided more of that. The experience of making your own rolls was fun and enjoyable.

Other dishes we got were:
– Garlic Noodles: A fusion dish that was just okay, nothing special.

– Honey-grilled chicken Banh Mi: tasted great and fresh! The bread was soft, pillowy, and fresh; the chicken was tender; and the vegetables were crunchy—a great mix of textures.

– Grilled pork belly with rice: Didn’t try this one, but from what I heard the meat didn’t taste that great and it also went really skimpy on the veggies.

For dessert, we tried the Pandan Layer Cake and Sticky Rice Banana. Both had a strong mung bean flavor, similar sticky textures, and the coconut cream on both added a creamy, sweet touch. Both were sweet enough without overdoing it. I personally enjoyed the pandan cake more, though you can’t really taste any pandan flavor.

Overall, the service was quick and friendly, and the ambience is very quiet— there were only 1-2 other parties there for a weeknight dinner. The space is pretty small with cohesive decor and a setup that feels intimate.

I would say the prices are pretty expensive ($14-16 for a banh mi is QUITE steep), but it’s on average pretty reasonable for the portions and the location.

Awesome Vietnamese restaurant! Came here for early dinner with family, and try some beer! Did I mention they have beer taps on the wall! Huge variety of beers and live band ! Food was authentic, we had the Mekong combo pho, veggie pho, fried pork rolls, veggie dumplings, and shaken beef over rice! Everything was tasty and perfect portions. Will definitely be back here again!

As someone who truly loves pho, I was very disappointed with my experience here. The broth was overly salty and darker than expected, the beef brisket was quite tough and didn’t taste fresh, and the bowl lacked enough vegetables and herbs. I honestly don’t understand how this place received such high ratings. On top of that, there were some unexpected extra charges, which felt misleading. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this restaurant — it simply wasn’t worth the money or time.

My husband and I drove from NYC to eat at Mekong District at Nyack and the food surpassed all of our expectations! We are big fans of Vietnamese food and this place now ranks at the top of our go to places even if it’s a bit of drive. Pho with oxtail was delicious, especially the broth … the kind of broth you want to slurp from the bowl or bring back home just to slurp later! The curry mussels were amazing …. the curry itself almost outshined the mussels, beef cubes were tender and since it was the first dish I tried I pretty much inhaled the food (hence no photos), chicken and waffles were perfection…. honestly there was not a single dish that’s not worth raving about but in order to keep this review short, I will just say if you happen to be in Nyack visit this little gem of a place!!
