McConkey’s Jungle Shack was a great stop on Edisto! We ordered the fish & chips and onion rings, and everything was delicious. The onion rings were especially good — light, crispy batter without being too thick. The fish was perfectly cooked and the house-made chips hit the spot. We sat outside on the patio and enjoyed the fun island atmosphere. Service was very attentive. Definitely worth a visit!

Food was very good. Everything was clean and very casual. No need to dress up however you do want to arrive for 6 PM to be able to get a table. All seating is outdoors so plan accordingly for the weather. Some areas have a screened in porch like setting and another area is not screened in typical American casual fare. Plenty of parking.

Seated with no wait, service was attentive and fios was excellent. We spent $61 (including tip) for shrimp and chips and fish and chips plus two ice teas.

For the area this seems like some good eats. The price vs portion was pretty solid. The wings were actually pretty good. The atmosphere is along the lines of, if an eclectic sea side shanty was crossed with an ice cream stand.

Outdoor restaurant with great sandwich type food. Not at all fancy but definitely a go-to place (if the weather isn’t bad.)

After paying out the nose at a very expensive restaurant where flavor was missing in most of the food, what a refreshing experience to eat at a beach shack with great tasting food at reasonable prices. Honestly, the food here will surprise you. House salad with shrimp and a ginger sesame dressing was fresh and very tasty. Fish tacos were light and flavorful. The Cuban sandwich was a riff on the theme, filled with excellent, smoky pulled pork and a delicious hot honey mustard. The fresh housemade potato chips were honestly addictive. Well done burger with bacon and cheese was still juicy and tasty, and accompanying salad was very fresh. All in all a really nice experience with helpful staff and a fun, easy-going atmosphere.

We have been fans of McConkey’s for nearly a decade since buying a home at Edisto Beach. The food is always great and we have truly enjoyed the McConkey’s “vibe” and friendly staff.

We last visited McConkey’s on December 28. While the food was as good as always, we were surprised to find that a new ordering system had been implemented since our previous visit. We were handed a device into which we were to enter our order. Rather than the usual friendly chatter with our server, we were given a little “speech” on using the new ordering system. A document was also placed on each table explaining the benefits of the new system and the rationale for moving to it.

My wife, daughter, and I are very tech savvy, but even we found the new system very “clunky” and lacking the intuitive flow of systems that are common in more and more self-order, fast food establishments. With ordering now the responsibility of the customer, tables with multiple people either need to pass a device around from person to person with each having to learn the interface to make their selections OR attempt to have one person at the table place orders for everyone at the table. Guests are also expected to handle payment on their own through the device.

While this approach may be workable during the off-season when “regulars” who are familiar with the system visit, we are very concerned about how slow things will become during peak season when each week brings a new wave of vacationers who have to learn the system. During our last visit, the table next to us apparently entered their phone number incorrectly resulting in updates about their order going to the wrong phone number. Staff needed to sort that out with both the customer at the table as well as the owner of the phone number entered who was calling to ask what was going on as they didn’t place an order. Not something you want to have to deal with during peak summer rush.

From a business perspective, these delays will almost certainly mean slower throughout, longer wait times, fewer turns of each table each day (I.e. lower revenue) and disgruntled guests.

We have come to know a good number of the McConkey’s employees over the years, and we are afraid of what this new system will do to their livelihoods. Servers are now being referred to a “customer assistance” reps or something like that likely due to SC rules around role-based tipping. And while the ability to pay all employees a “living wage” is touted as one of the benefits of the system, what is not stated is that the ability to do so will be, in part, due to needing fewer employees and at least for servers, significantly reduced pay due to changes in how tips are distributed. It is also rather likely that people will be less inclined to tip as much as they otherwise would without traditional servers.

Bottom line, we will look to other restaurants when we want the traditional sit-down experience with servers (who we will continue to tip generously). We may limit our future McConkey’s support to take-out only as it is very clear that the new system is meant to limit the need for traditional servers.

The document on the table when we were there stated that they were looking for feedback on the system, but there was no apparent opportunity to provide input on our experience. Hopefully, the owners of McConkey’s will reconsider this new system and return to the traditional server experience that is so critical to hospitality.
