I have been told that a review of MAZU is effectively a journey through the cultural heritage of its owners, Angie Hsu and Matan Mazursky. Tucked away in Keith’s Alley in Yellow Springs, this 100% vegan “menu without borders” has become a cornerstone of the Dayton area dining scene since opening in early 2023. The space is warm and modern, featuring an open kitchen and handmade ceramic plating crafted by co-owner Angie Hsu. It doubles as a community hub, hosting social justice initiatives and a volunteer led soup kitchen, Who’s Hungry, on its off days.

Our Order: The Standouts
The menu leans into the natural versatility of whole ingredients rather than processed meat substitutes. Our experiences over two visits, first in August and a return trip just a few weeks later, confirmed that the kitchen’s strength lies in its bold textures and authentic spices.
The Yansu Mushrooms (The Showstopper): These are, without question, the highlight of the menu. They consist of deep fried local oyster mushrooms sprinkled with toasted spices and fried basil. They provide a satisfying crunch and savory depth that was so compelling we returned specifically for another round.
The Sabich: This Iraqi Jewish pita sandwich features fried eggplant, potato, salad, tahini, and mango chutney. It is a dense, flavorful explosion of textures that we enjoyed during our visits.
Masala Chaat: This savory, spicy, and sweet mix includes bhel and sev, chickpea and potato curry, tomato, onion, chutneys, and cilantro. It is a complex dish that highlights the South Indian influences on the menu. Ordered again on my second visit.
Sustainability & Service
Service is casual counter style. There is a clear emphasis on sustainability, from sourcing produce through Guided by Mushrooms to encouraging guests to bring their own takeout containers.
The Verdict
MAZU succeeds by creating food that is exciting to everyone, regardless of their diet. It is a rare find in the Midwest: a place where the food has as much soul and history as it does flavor. It is the kind of spot that earns its reputation one order of Yansu mushrooms at a time.

This place is such a gem!!! Great food (like really unique flavors and textures) & good vibes inside. I especially loved the “pay it forward” for their soup that’s available for free! So awesome.

Hesitant on going here as we’re not vegans, but love trying new foods. Everything was delicious. The fried mushrooms are addicting and unlike any I’ve had before. You got to try them for yourself!

Friggin amazing cuisine. I mean, they did the unthinkable: scallion pancake burrito (wrap). It’s genius. The mushrooms are so simple yet so delicious. The bao is wow. We just love this place. 2nd time eating here and it exceeded our expectations again.

Absolutely incredible food and amazingly friendly staff! I love the diversity and inclusivity that oozes from this restaurant. Their food is so flavorful and filling, and always leaves me feeling satisfied and looking forward to my next visit. I always dine inside, which is a good option and allows you the chance to enjoy their posters. I do look forward to trying their outdoor dining next time! Mazu is always a great choice!

This was my first visit and the place smelled amazing the moment we walked in! This restaurant offers a small and cozy environment. The tables were clean and ready for seating when we walked in. The silverware is at the table for you to choose from including chopsticks. The menu is limited and our group got a variety of dishes to try and share. Everything we had was delicious. It’s great to have another vegan option in the area!

The food was fantastic – we tried about 4 things and all of them were great. The hummus and falafel platter was delicious, and the Dan Dan noodles were so good we ordered another one. The sauces with the scallion pancake are delicious and every single ingredient is fresh and bright. The space is warm and clean, and thoughtfully laid out. There is plenty of outdoor seating, and a good amount of indoor seating as well as a kids table.

The attention to detail from the food to the space itself is impressive. The Mazu Eats is not to be missed.

I’m a big foodie and I’ve been a vegan for about 2 years now and I’ve been experiencing different vegan restaurants and cuisine. Some place were amazing and others missed the mark completely. In my visit to Mazu I got the Guabao: A steamed bun with five spice braised tofu, mustard greens, cilantro, and peanut powder and Fattoush:
Falafel balls served on chopped salad with sev, tahini, mint, and sumac (GF). The presentation was beautiful and appetizing but the reality was unfortunately looks can be deceiving and in this case it absolutely was. The menu is inspired by diverse backgrounds, including Taiwanese, Israeli-Palestinian, and other cuisines. But what it’s not inspired by or infused with is flavor, seasonings or spice. The Guabao where was the five spice? The only thing good about this dish was the pickled radish’s which they only served 4 lil slices of smh. The Fattoush was also flavorless, gritty and dry and the “salad” it was served on top of was basically the same how does that happen. The tahini had no flavor the whole experience was unfortunately lackluster. I was so excited and ended up so disappointed. I came from out of town to experience this restaurant, the customer service was good and had more seasoning than the food. On a positive note the Mango Lassi was delicious and refreshing.

What a fantastic, amazingly delicious new place. The food is so good that you’ll want to order one of everything ever time you go. The mushrooms are cooked in such a way that you’d never know they were mushrooms! Every item
I’ve had here is above and beyond and tastes like something that supernaturally satiated my taste buds. The crew is fantastic, friendly and goes above and beyond. We are so happy they are in our little village and hopefully got a long time to come!
