The vibes were immaculate. The staff was friendly and welcoming. The food was genuinely some of the best I’ve had in carytown.
It took me a second to get the theme of what was going on but once I did I loved it even more. The food came out very fast and everything, legitimately every bit, was fantastic.
We got 2 beers, 2 appetizers, 3 sushi rolls, and split pad Thai.. it was only $75.. and the quality was remarkable. The cucumber salad is so good we tried getting 4 orders to go. The sushi was fresh and well made. The pad Thai may be my personal favorite in Richmond.. I didn’t realize the person bringing us our food was actually one of the owners and what a gem of a human he was.
Above the bar played an anime movie and the wall decor matched. Its subtle anime theme works so well. I just can’t recommend this place enough.
Seriously.
Go. Tonight.. tomorrow night. Daily.
Once they open at 4 today I will be ordering a bunch of that cucumber salad to go.
The sushi is fairly low cost compared to others but it’s totally worth it. I really recommend the soy boy! It’s probably my favorite house specialty roll.
The staff is friendly and the restaurant was clean during our multiple visits. This place is absolutely LBGTQ+ friendly.
Seating is mostly small tables that can be combined (they pulled two together for our family of four). The tables are reasonably spaced (you’re not tight, elbow to elbow, like some downtown spots) but it would be difficult to fit a large crowd, especially during peak hours. We came a little before 6 pm and had seats available, but by 6:15/6:30, the wait was 30+ min, so I’d come early or late on rush nights.
The food was good. I got the fried rice, which was yummy, if not particularly novel, and my husband got curry, which was also delicious. Our kids really wanted sushi, so we tried a couple of different rolls, the Saiyan and Joy Boy, as well as tuna and salmon maki rolls. NOTE that during peak dining hours, they don’t take modifications for rolls in order to speed up making orders. Our kids enjoyed their sushi and all the food came out within a reasonable amount of time.
I am taking off one star because of the portion sizes for the sushi – even though they’re cut into 6 pieces, they’re half the size of rolls you might get at other sushi spots. The prices for the special rolls are less than other sushi spots, but you will have to order more rolls here, and the rolls themselves are simpler and less full. As an adult, I am usually content after a special roll and maybe a bowl of soup, but we ordered 2 special rolls and 2 maki rolls and edamame for our 4 and 5 year old. The maki rolls in particular are quite small, as you can tell by the last photo – that is my 4 year old son’s hand reaching for a piece.
The serving size of the two Thai dishes we ordered was normal, it’s just the sushi serving that caught us off guard. This does allow you to try more sushi if you want to think of it as almost tapas style? And the Build Your Own option is nice for people who are picky or have dietary restrictions, but just be aware that if you’re looking at prices, it’s not a spot for cheap sushi, it’s just smaller servings.
In general, we enjoyed our dinner and the spot is quite popular with families, students, professionals, etc. If you’re looking for a new spot for sushi or thai, it’s certainly worth a try, but if you already have a go-to, there’s nothing on the menu here I would come out of my way to check out.
Everyone built their own sushi except for me. I got the Tom Kha soup. It was delicious! My seven-year-old daughter built her own California Roll and devoured it. We ended up ordering a second one for her.
Service was friendly and quick.
The restrooms are in the basement. If you have young kids, I’d walk them down as the stairs are steep.
