What an absolutely amazing night! Chef Andrew Weissman has done it again…
The wine, the service, the food… all on point! The entire staff was warm, welcoming & incredibly attentive. Our server Ethan was extremely personable, delivering top notch service from our wine to our cappuccino. Everything was perfectly seasoned, which is rare in our over-salted San Antonio market. Highly recommended & will definitely return!

Amazing experience at Max’s Sister! The service was outstanding, super attentive and genuinely pleasant. The food was absolutely delicious. We started with the crab cake, which was fantastic, and I had the shakshuka, which was full of flavor and perfectly cooked. My friend had the trout, which was heavenly. Our server, Arturo, was wonderful and made the whole experience even better. Highly recommend and will definitely be back!

We visited in January and enjoyed it so much that my husband then booked Valentine’s Day dinner at Max’s Sister. As expected, the food was delicious. This time, we ordered the crab cake, beef tenderloin and mussels, and shared it all. We also enjoyed a couple cocktails and a bottle of Brunello, and finished with the orange cake + chocolate ice cream. Arturo was the absolute best server, along with the entire staff! We look forward to returning and trying new items.

Date night at Max’s Sister, the new restaurant that serves “American fare with French flair” that has been open for about a month now. We were able to call and make a reservation without issue and were seated without delay at our reservation time. We started with bread that came with citrus crusted European butter, appetizers (gold leaf risotto and paprika dusted onion rings with habanero ketchup), and entrees (pan roasted chicken breast, sauce fines herb, roasted mushrooms and petite top sirloin, peppercorn sauce, double blanched french fries). The food was high quality and reasonably priced for its value with $11 cocktails, $15 appetizers, and $24 entrees. Look forward to returning. Menu included in the post.

My wife and I had the opportunity to try Max’s Sister during the opening week for brunch, and it did not disappoint whatsoever. Chef Andrew Weissman and his team have done an amazing job with this new restaurant. Great atmosphere, great service, but better yet… amazing food. Cannot wait to come again!

We had reservations at Max’s Sister on Friday, November 14th at 7 pm, and I was genuinely excited to try this new restaurant given all the acclaim surrounding Chef Andrew Weissman. Unfortunately, our experience fell well short of expectations.

On the positive side, the restaurant is beautifully decorated, conveniently located, and has plenty of parking. We dined outside, which had the charm of a European café. The concept of the menu—“Elevated Fare with a French Flair”—also sounded promising.

We began by ordering wine: a Pinot Grigio and a Riesling. My wife ordered the signature chicken fried steak, and I ordered the trout. We also planned ahead to try the Ultimate Orange Cake, so we skipped appetizers to save room for dessert.

Unfortunately, this is where the dining experience started to unravel.

Our wine order was lost, according to the bartender, so we had to reorder. When the wine finally arrived, the Pinot Grigio was missing, but we didn’t make an issue of it and just kept the two Rieslings.

After waiting about 45 minutes with no food, we asked for an update. The male floor manager informed us that our female waiter had forgotten to put our order into the kitchen. He apologized and offered us a complimentary appetizer, so we ordered the baby spinach salad. The dressing was good, but the salad itself was disappointing—mostly plain spinach with only two tiny pear slices.

Our entrées arrived more than an hour after we first ordered. The chicken fried steak was perfectly fried with tender meat, though the mashed potatoes lacked flavor. My trout was delicious—sauce, potatoes, and haricot verts included—but the portions were surprisingly small. The offering had the appearance of sloppiness with seven small potatoes about the size of thimbles, and there were only five green beans. It gave the impression the restaurant was running out of food by the quantities and proportions.

Also, what felt especially odd, was our waiter brought the check shortly after dropping off the entrées, which gave the impression they wanted us to leave quickly. When we asked about the dessert we had planned on ordering, she admitted she’d forgotten. She took the check back and finally placed the dessert order.

We regretted it. The “Ultimate Orange Cake” tasted like a simple yellow cake soaked in sugary syrup with grapefruit slices—devoid of any orange flavor.

To top off the evening, the “complimentary” salad offered by the floor manager appeared on our final bill. At that point, we chose not to argue and just paid for it.

Overall, I cannot recommend Max’s Sister at this time. The service issues, kitchen delays, and inconsistent food made for a disappointing experience—especially surprising coming from an award-winning James Beard chef. I hope the restaurant can resolve these problems soon, because the concept and atmosphere show real potential.

Absolutely amazing. All Entrees $24 but with the service and ambiance you feel like you will be dropping $100/person. San Antonio should feel honored to have such a chef driven, classy, yet affordable place in town. I cannot wait to go back.

We ate there yesterday for Valentine’s lunch. The service from Ethan and others was spectacular.
My husband ordered the chicken fried steak which was gorgeously crispy and I had the wedge salad. Dessert was an orange cake with chocolate ice cream and brown butter ganache. Amazing!
It was a beautiful dining experience where one could linger and savor the food and the attention to detail. Thank you, thank you, Ethan for your hospitality and wonderful service!

We had dinner at Max’s Sister and the food was amazing.

We started with Bread Service with the most amazing butter, along with the Pork Belly. The Service was very attentive however the main courses took quite a long time. We ordered the trout (very thin cut) a & award winning/infamous Chicken fried steak with was amazing. Our server was great, but all tables seemed to have a long wait time. The atomosphere was nice, however not much updating from the previous owned Hayden in that spot but still very clean, and nice inside.

Will definitely be back to try a new dish. Thank you Max’s Sister!! Excited you are in the neighborhood!

An absolute standout — refined, comforting, and executed flawlessly

From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere strikes the perfect balance: relaxed yet contemporary, welcoming without losing its sense of polish. It sets the tone for what ends up being an exceptional dining experience from start to finish.

The food is where this place truly shines. The risotto and crab cake both carry a beautiful French flair. The risotto had incredible depth—rich, savory, and thoughtfully layered—while the crab cake delivered a wonderful tang and creaminess that felt indulgent without being heavy. Every bite was intentional and refined.

Even the butter and bread service deserves praise. The herbal bread paired with a creamy butter blended with lemon ash was absolutely outstanding—one of those small touches that immediately signals you’re in good hands.

Entrées continued to impress. The meatloaf was deeply satisfying and expertly prepared, while the country fried steak was battered perfectly. The green beans alongside it tasted incredibly fresh and full of flavor—clearly not an afterthought, but treated with the same care as the main dish.

Cocktails were equally well done. The Old Fashioned was balanced and classic, and the espresso martini really stood out—the coffee flavor came through with bright, clear notes instead of being muddy or overly sweet.

A subtle but thoughtful detail was the fresh fruit and vegetable slices infused in the water. It added a refreshing, palate-cleansing touch between courses and elevated the overall experience.

Pricing is extremely fair for the quality, making this feel like a true value without cutting corners. Service was excellent—attentive, polished, and absolutely on par with high-end steakhouses like J-Prime. The staff even boxed our meals for us, which is a small gesture that speaks volumes about their attention to detail and hospitality.

Overall, this is a genuine treat—beautifully executed scratch food, outstanding service, and an experience that feels special without being pretentious. A place you’ll happily return to and recommend without hesitation.
