Max’s is a familiar spot, and it delivers exactly what you’d expect: comforting food that stirs up fond memories, even if the menu sticks to the usual options. ️
We started with the Shanghai lumpia, a crowd-pleaser that never disappoints. It’s a perfect choice whether you’re looking for an appetizer or something to round out your meal. Max’s prepares them skillfully, and they arrive in a creative deep-fried lumpia wrapper bowl. You *can* eat the bowl, but honestly, it’s not the tastiest part—it’s more for show than flavor.
Next, we tried the pancit bihon, which was a refreshing switch from palabok. The noodles are thicker and moister, reminding me of Chinese long-life noodles. They pair wonderfully with the lumpia, creating a balanced and satisfying combination.
Finally, we had the kare kare—a rich, peanut-flavored chicken dish that packs a bold taste. The meat is oxtail. It’s almost too intense on its own, so pairing it with white rice is a must to mellow it out.
The service was friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. I only wish I’d saved room for halo halo—the picture on the menu looked absolutely stunning, and I’m already looking forward to trying it next time!

This was our first visit to Max’s in several years! We had a very pleasant experience as we had a friendly and courteous server take care of our party of four.
The food came out relatively quickly and the dishes were delicious. Our favorites were the garlic rice (I know, it’s hard to get wearing), Max’s famous fried chicken, the pancit palabok and the Shanghai Lumpia served in a “taco” shell.

Food was great, ordered sinigang, and crispy pata. I would order it again. BUT…
As for service, the server never checked in on us after our food was served. We had to call someone to our table a few times to get what we needed. The staff’s station doesn’t really oversee everything, better not sit by the booths close to the entrance because you’ll just be forgotten like we were. 2 birthdays was celebrated when we got there, and the staff sang for them which I don’t mind but the background music was uncomfortably loud. You can’t even have a decent conversation on your own table.
Even if the food is great, I don’t recommend dining there. Just get food for to go. They don’t clean the table or the seats thoroughly. The table was sticky, the menu had visible stain on the corner on one, and the seat had some rice and sauce which the staff saw before seating us and even tried to remove it with the menu yet still didn’t even come off. Didn’t enjoy eating there.

The last time I had Max’s Chicken was when I was a little boy back in the Philippines. My family went during special occasions only. I was then focused on finishing one whole chicken by myself. Today’s visit did not echo that focus. I was more interested in tasting authenticity of dishes. We consumed a lot of fried dishes today. Max’s Chicken was just that; fried to a crisp. Crispy Pata was perfectly fried. Chicharron Bulaklak brought back memories but I’ve had bigger sized ones. I know that these fried foods were not good for me but I appreciate that dishes weren’t salty. We also tried their lumpia sariwa, kare-kare, garlic fried rice and halo-halo for dessert. Dishes were on par with most Filipino restaurants. Because we can make these dishes at home, it’s truly hard to compare. Even the leche-flan included in the halo-halo was just ok. We spent over $230+ for 5 people during our luncheon. So, consider this eatery expensive for “par” food. Go somewhere else or simply cook these dishes at home.

Chicken was light and crispy. Not oily like the other popular Filipino chicken place that we all know. The halo halo had great presentation but didn’t have enough of the fun yummies I expected. This is mommy’s favorite childhood restaurant from the Philippines. The food was fine. I liked that it wasn’t salty. I liked the lumpia presentation in an open wrapper. Garlic rice was nicely flavored, but could have used more garlic. I’ll come back next time in town to try more chicken.

Had the new year special for $100. Was NOT WORTH IT… The food tastes wonderful with a good ol’ remembrance of the homeland, but that special was terrible.. when my moon got the food and tried them out. DRY, HARD, and very little in portions. I’d rather go to Jade China after getting this and get the party trays with MAJOR PORTIONS while paying the same price!

Nice and tasty treat. We ordered quite a lot. We had 2 order of fresh lumpia, 2 of Crispy Pata, 2 fried whole chicken, plain rice, garlic fried rice, sinigang, lumpia Shanghai,lechon kawali, lechon kawali sisig, chop suey, pancit canton and finally 7 halo halo. That was amazing and a lot to go. As always, post wherever your palate takes you.

I haven’t been to this place for a while. It sort of deteriorated. Place isn’t that clean, and the floor was sticky. Our table also had food remnants of the previous customers. Fried chicken was just ok. Sisig is a pass. Kare kare pass as well. The service was the best thing at this place. You can get better food in Daly City. I guess if you are in the area, try it, but don’t expect too much.
