we stopped by max’s allegheny tavern on a weekday night and had a great experience. a highlight we almost missed was the cinnamon cider special ; i didn’t see it on the paper menu, but my friend spotted it on the board near the door! it was perfectly spiced and incredibly delicious. max’s sausage platter was also fantastic. quick tip: the soft pretzel is absolutely massive , so plan on sharing it with your table! our waiter was also super nice and friendly.

Cute little whole in wall Pittsburgh staple in the North Shore. If you are a German food fan, this is the place for you. The meats and sausages are so flavorful and by far the best in the city. I love how cute and quaint it is. It used to be an old hotel before they changed it to Max’s.
The service is super friendly and they give you FREE buttery and perfectly salted FRESH popped popcorn. And it was AMAZING!!!!
I got the Knackwurst and it was super yummy. Fresh cut fries and homemade ranch! Im not a kraut person but I actually liked there’s too! My boyfriend got the Bratwurst and he said it was very flavorful and the most tender hes ever had.
Its nice that they have a menu dedicated to people like me and him who are Gluten Free!

We got there a little after 7 pm on a Saturday. We were only a party of 2 and got immediately seated at a booth in the bar, but it felt cozy. I hadn’t had German food in quite a while. It was delicious! I got the wiener schnitzel and my bf got jager schnitzel. Perfect potato pancakes! Enjoyed the beer flight as well. We split it and it was the perfect amount for two. I plan to make this q must-visit for every time I go to Pittsburgh.

Absolutely beautiful building with some cool history. Janet was awesome, and so were the patrons!
The fried zucchini hit the spot, and the beautiful stained glass throughout makes this the perfect blast from the past place for lunch or dinner!
Will absolutely be back!

I wish I had found this spot sooner. I’m new to Pittsburgh but this spot made me feel at home immediately. Cozy, friendly with really great food. Super fair priced & friendly staff.

My wife and I visited for the first time and were both VERY pleased with the experience. The food was great. The potato pancakes I had as a side were probably the best I’ve ever made myself or had in any restaurant. The sausages were excellent. Bread products were darn near perfect. Our server was very pleasant and attentive but not clingy. The atmosphere was quite enjoyable. From the menus printed inside a faux vintage newspaper, to the decor, to the German music playing in the background… terrific. Even though it is about an hour’s drive for us when traffic is light, my wife and I agree it is well worth it.

We are visiting Pittsburgh on a work trip. We found Max’s based on what is close to our lodging. The building itself is very charming. Inside is clean and super welcoming. Our waitress was Jean and she was very kind, helpful, and quick with anything we asked for. The food was fresh and came out quickly. A very authentic German menu. Sadly, our time was cut short due to a fellow patron seated behind me and with tight seating this person was very close. He proceeded to blow his nose aggressively at the table, while sneezing and sniffing repeatedly. This is absolutely no fault of the establishment. However, when I expressed my concern and wish for to-go boxes and my reason why, Jean quickly gathered everything we needed. She was very empathetic to our concern. Thank you Jean for taking care of us. If we are ever in Pittsburgh again we will most definitely come back to Max’s.

Friends and I started going to the “North Side”
of Pittsburgh in the 1980’s. Max’s was a great meeting place on weekends. The Rathskeller downstairs was a blast with shuffleboard, a fun crowd, and reasonably priced beer and food.
A few months ago a group of us met at Max’s before and after a Pirates game. It’s a pleasant 15 to 20 minute walk.
I’m so happy that Max’s is open and thriving. It’s very reasonably priced and service is friendly.
If you enjoy authentic, tasty German food, they have it. Rueben, sausage platter (my favorite), Einlauf Soup!, outstanding Spinach Salad, Wiener and Jager Schnitzel: all great, with a huge beer selection. Great deserts too!
The area is also known as East Allegheny (Deutschtown) and Max’s has lots of history: a detailed wooden bar from the 1904 World’s Fair,
colorful cut-glass windows and original tin ceilings, and a big wooden ice box they still use.
Max’s is rumored to be inhabited by the ghost of the original tavern owner. What more could you ask for?
I have to mention: a five minute drive away is the Mexican War Streets: you’ll see beautiful antique row houses nicely maintained with some perfectly preserved mansions (some built by Pittsburgh giants of steel, railroads, and finance) in the area. There are great Christmas tours on weekends but you need to book ahead.
The Pittsburgh Aviary is a short drive away and it’s worth a visit.

The food was slightly less than average. Sort of thing that you would get at like a church potluck. But you pay 50 bucks for it.
Atmosphere is awesome. The booth was awesome. Server also awesome. I was pretty stoked for this food and very disappointed.

Our food was awesome!! I really enjoyed it. The atmosphere was so warm and cozy. The menus described everything in great detail and they even have German non-alcoholic beer.
