I didn’t get pictures of all my food since everything looked and tasted delicious so I just dug in. This place is authentic and reminds me a bit of Japan with a twist of western culture.

I’m saying this as I saw the chef talking with customers at the sushi bar. Also the servers seemed to be familiar with a lot of customers.

Would recommend coming here. The last time I can here was 10 years ago and it’s the same staff.

They have a diverse menu allowing you to be adventurous. Would recommend the grilled intestines and Anago tempura which were both delicious. The oyster motoyaki was good too. The sushi rice and sushi rolls here were just average. Tako wasabi and nigiri was standard. The table setting and plates were very nice.

Matoi Sushi is my go to Sushi Restaurant. The staff are great, food is delicious and I enjoy the atmosphere! They go above and beyond each time I visit. My favorite is the Lunch Box with the chicken teriyaki!

If I lived closer, I’d be here every week. Matoi Sushi is a true hidden gem—fresh, authentic, and full of flavour.

The omakase sashimi and nigiri are next level. The owner-chef personally sources the seafood (even from Steveston) and serves rare cuts you won’t find elsewhere.

Daily specials change often, based on what’s freshest—and they never miss. Cold dishes and hot dishes are just as solid.

Staff are super kind and welcoming, and service is always warm and makes you feel right at home.

Can’t wait to go back and try the rest of the menu!

The establishment needs to manage takeout orders more efficiently. While the food is good, showcasing traditional Japanese preparation, it’s clear that there aren’t enough servers on the floor when it’s busy. This issue must be addressed to improve overall service.

One of the best Japanese restaurant in the area for sure. They keep it very authentic. I take my clients here for a nice meal all the time and I know I can easily impress them here. Highly recommend!

Fantastic food!! Wonderful atmosphere with the best sushi!! Amazing appetizers…the miso soup will warm your belly and your heart, the edamame is hot and salted to perfection, chicken karaage is can’t miss and of course the best sushi with fresh delicious fish. Staff is friendly and attentive always making sure you’re taken care of. Vancouver has the best sushi outside of Japan and Matoi is the best sushi in Vancouver, that should tell you everything you need to know, highly recommended!!

If you are looking for a bit more of an authentic and adventurous menu, come here. My husband and I love Matoi for their expanded menu of things other than Sushi. We love their Teishoku (lunch plates), in particular their grilled fish options. Their raw fish options are also great. Their Nigiri is always super fresh and they have a lot of selection.

If you aren’t into super flashy rolls and want a more authentic experience, come here.

Amazing food. But on top of that, what a great service. Chef is so considerate. I chose something unusual and he gave me a sample before sending out the whole item. Kayley is super sweet. Great service by her.

I’ve been going here for some time, food is overall good. A friend and her family introduced me to this place as it’s their go to and I had good experience when with her however the last few visits haven’t been great and tonight I was left completely appalled by the way the older Japanese lady whom I believe is the manager treated me horribly and embarrassed me in front of folks sitting near by as I was picking up my order. I had called in my order and asked for 5 soy sauce packets for 2 rolls. Reason being, the last pick up order which was just yesterday, they only gave me 2 packets and the time before they completely forgot. So today when I asked for 5 (order taken by Yuko my receipt says) she immediately said “FIVE?! You need FIVE for 2 rolls?” I thought that was really inappropriate as I’ve NEVER had any sushi restaurant question how many soy sauces I’m requesting and I’ve also never had anyone be so cheap with their soy sauces that this issue has never come up, so I told her yes and explained to her how they didn’t include enough last time and forgot the time before and I had to use my own soy sauce from home, so she said ok and took my order.

Once I got there, she handed me the machine without the bill and I had a feeling something was off so I asked for the bill. Sure enough she charged me extra for the soy sauce. I was in disbelief and questioned the .30 cent charge, she started arguing with me and loudly accusing me of not requesting soy sauce on my previous order, and I told her that wasn’t true and she completely embarrassed me in front of diners looking on. It was absolutely unreal and completely unacceptable.
This isn’t the first time she’s treated me poorly either, once I had to send an item back that wasn’t prepared as it usually is and was inedible and she tried to still charge me for it even tho I only took one bite.
This person needs to learn what good customer service is and the importance of treating loyal regular customers well and with appreciation and kindness.
One time I was there with a friend and my friend commented that this lady made her feel nervous as she moved very quick and seems very angry all the time, it’s in her energy.
It’s unfortunate I have to make this review tonight as it’s not aimed at the chefs or the rest of the staff, the other Japanese ladies are lovely, it’s purely on the way this lady treated me so bad, questioned me over a couple extra packets of soy sauce, SOY SAUCE!!!! (They’re so cheap with it too, they’ll only give you 1 per roll)

I will likely order here again as I do like their food and I’ll just hope I go in when this lady isn’t there. If this lady apologizes and makes this right I may take down this post but it’s absolutely unacceptable and shameful the way she humiliated me tonight so this post will up for now.

I’ll conclude, if customer service and being appreciated and valued as a customer is important to you, maybe go elsewhere, lots of great sushi spots in town with equally good food, but if you don’t care, this place has some good items.
