Needed a quick bite and checked out this place on Google maps. The store doesn’t even have a place to seat and the owner hands over the food through a window. But hands down, it was the best banh mi I’ve ever had. The chicken was so juicy and the fillings were fresh, the bun was so nice. Lady was lowkey rude but still gonna come here cause the food is worth all of that.

I don’t usually leave bad reviews, but this time I really have to speak up.
I’ve been a loyal customer at Master Roll Vietnam in Carnegie for two years. About six months ago, I noticed the quality of their banh mi had declined — the bread was tough, and the ingredients didn’t taste fresh. I didn’t comment at the time, thinking it might’ve been a one-off issue since I went around 5:45 PM, close to closing.
Today, I finally gave it another try and went early at 11 AM, hoping for a better experience. Unfortunately, it was even more disappointing. The bread was hard as a rock, the crispy tofu wasn’t crispy or fragrant, and everything tasted stale. It was so dry and tough that I had to sip water with each bite just to get it down.
To make it worse, the price had increased from $11 to $12 — and honestly, the quality doesn’t match the cost at all. It felt like a complete waste of money. I couldn’t even finish it.
Really disappointed.

$12 crispy pork belly banh mi. Stale roll! Quite a dense bread. Would have been great this morning, but at 12:30pm it’s a bit of a disappointment. Apparently baked in Hawthorn every morning. Very nice pork. Soft and moist, with super crunchy crackling. Good flavours in the pickled carrot and daikon. A touch of raw onion. I thought I saw chilli but didn’t taste it. Needs the mayo because unusually there seems to be no hoisin involved. Means you can really taste the pork itself – which is very meaty and fatty but not all that nice as a solo flavour, I’d have to say, mainly just a little salty. Great textures though. $11 Cold cuts is nicer. Lovely light freshness and mayo/pate creaminess offsets the bread. Really good flavour balance. Did they forget the chilli? Yes but still yummy. Pate good. With fresh bread and/or a quick reviving toast and this could have been fabulous. Definitely prefer the cold cuts. Glad I didn’t go the $15 roast duck. Overall a good and interesting experience, but pretty sure the accolades are to be reserved for a larger bakery franchise site, not this little hole in the wall. Will have to try South Yarra sometime.

I’ve had such good Banh Mi in the past here so when I recently went and had the worst one of my life I was so disappointed but i put it down to end of day, the crispy pork was cold and not crispy at all… and the flavour just wasn’t there.
I gave them the benefit of doubt and went back last week, looked inside to see that the crispy pork looked hot and crispy. It was, but when I was handed the sandwich quickly I questioned whether it had paté and sauce and all the trimmings etc in it and was assured it did. But after eating half the sandwich I still didnt find it.
Maybe there was a little smear of paté but this guy had absolutely no clue how to make a $16 sandwich.
It was also absolutely bucketing down and I stepped inside to shelter from the rain while waiting for my order and he told me to stand outside???

Had the $12 crispy pork roll – the pork itself was warm, moist and the crackling was super crunchy. The bread seemed a bit old (maybe because it was a public holiday) but was totally edible. Definitely still worth a try.

I had the crispy pork banh mi & unfortunately it was one of the most mediocre I’ve ever had. The pork barely had any crispy bits, the other fillings made the roll wet & all the chilli was in the last bite. Considering how expensive it was, I won’t be returning or recommending.

Bread was a bit stale but we visited in the afternoon so not too much to complain about. Not quite best in Melbourne but I had a good time!

My favourite place for a bahn mi – the crispy tofu is my roll of choice. They get the balance of filling, crispy bread, veggies, sauce and salt and pepper just right. Not too wet and not too dry.

The pork bahn mi was good. The pork was delicious, tender, juicy and super well cooked. The actual bahn mi was fine but it didn’t have enough veggies unfortunately. The paper rice rolls were also good, again a bit too much of noodles of the duck was delicious. Recommended.
