I stopped by Marugame Udon with a buddy for a quick Friday lunch after hearing great things about their freshly made udon and build-your-own-style setup. The line was long but moved fast, and I was curious to see if it lived up to the hype.
What I Ordered:
Nikutama Udon (Regular) – $10.95
A savory-sweet bowl of udon topped with tender beef, soft-poached egg, and green onions.
Tempura Shrimp, Pumpkin, and Egg Omelet – ~$2 each
Highlights:
Nikutama Udon Broth & Noodles:
The broth was rich and flavorful, with a slight sweetness that paired well with the sweet beef. The udon noodles had that perfect bouncy chew. Comforting and satisfying without being too heavy.
Tempura Batter:
Crispy and well-seasoned—but the pieces themselves (especially the shrimp and pumpkin) had clearly been sitting under the heat lamp too long. The texture was dry and lacked that fresh-fried punch.
Quick & Efficient Setup:
Despite the lunch rush, the cafeteria-style ordering moved quickly. You grab a tray, pick your udon, add sides, and pay at the end—great for a fast casual meal.
✨ Other Notes:
Toppings Bar: Free green onions, tempura flakes, garlic, and sauces let you customize your bowl to your liking.
Affordable for the Quality: Under $20 for a filling lunch with multiple items—good value overall.
⚠️ Areas for Improvement:
Tempura Freshness: The batter was on point, but the holding time under the lamp affected the texture and flavor. Would love to see higher turnover or made-to-order options during off-peak hours.
Though the portion of beef felt a bit sparse for the price. Still tasty and well-marinated.
Limited Seating During Lunch Rush: It was tough to find a spot during peak lunch—expect to hover a bit before you can sit down.
Tips:
Credit cards and Apple Pay accepted
Self-serve water and condiments available
Try to go before noon or after 1:30 PM to avoid the worst of the lunch crowd
Free parking in the shared mall parking lot and structures
Indoor/Outdoor seating and tables turn over pretty quickly
I’d definitely come back to Marugame Udon for a fast, reliable meal. Next time, I’ll try the curry udon and maybe skip the tempura unless it looks freshly made. If you’re in the mood for a customizable, satisfying bowl of noodles without the long wait of a sit-down spot, this is a solid choice.
I really wanted a beef bowl and couldn’t find a place for a decent one. So of course when I saw that Marugame had one on its menu, I had to order it to try. We also went against the grain of ordering the usual udon selections and tried one of their curry noodle options. And loaded up on all the tempura!
The gyudon (beef bowl) felt like a great value at $10.95 and that bowl is huge! Much better than our Yoshinoya here and sorta close to one in Japan. The large curry nikutama udon ($15.95) came with the same beef as the beef bowl and was also delicious. Lots of curry, so we actually dipped some of the tempura in the curry and scooped some of the curry into the gyudon.
We tried the following tempura and all were good, especially dipped in curry! Though our least favorite was the potato croquette, so we wouldn’t order that again.
* big chicken katsu $4.75
* zucchini tempura $1.95
* potato croquette $2.25
* shrimp tempura $2.25
* tamagoyaki tempura $1.95
* squid tempura $2.25
The line to order can look daunting, but it moves. Seating might also look limited but they do try to enforce the ‘no seating yourself until you’ve ordered and are carrying your food’ so by the time you pick up your food, there should be some free tables. Grab utensils and napkins on the side after you pay and bus your empty trays there afterwards too.
What a great addition to the mall! So glad there’s a closeby place for a decent beef bowl!
Visited on a Monday afternoon ️
Ordered the chicken katsu curry and some tempura To-Go!
The chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside!! It came with green onions and tempura flakes on top. The curry was tasty and had a great consistency. Very delicious and a nice option for an udon eatery. I added to my meal from their tempura selection: zucchini, potato and egg. All delicious and crunchy!
I’d give it a solid 9 out of 10. It definitely satisfied my craving.
The inside was very clean! ✅
The staff were friendly, helpful and quick! The overall customer service was a 9.5 out of 10.
This place will now be a regular spot to stop by and eat at!
