This is our first time to eat here. The drinks are good! The enchiladas were good (per my dad) and I had a 4 taco meal w/ refried beans. The meat (shredded steak) was tender and tastes good, but the shells they put them in were really greasy, and it came with a bowl full of the steak grease and bits of steak…to dip the tacos in? I thought they were just flour tortillas, but hey were fried in the grease too, I think? It was ok, but I don’t think I will be back! The salsa & cheese sauce they brought us for the chips (greasy) and very cold! I rated it as a 3 but it should have been a 2! Sorry

The fish I ate tasted like old oil, it was awful, very dry and tasteless. The rice that came with it seemed old, the vegetables were even dry, and they even managed to make the fries tasteless. The only thing that was really delicious was the salsa. The service was terrible; they leave you waiting without cutlery or napkins. A friend said the food was awful and I wanted to try it, and I regretted it. I don’t plan on ever going back.

We decided to go recently with some girlfriends for Galentines this year. Two of my friends ordered carne azada plate. When it came to our tables the steak was burnt (tasted like burnt grill they mentioned) We managed to say something to the waitress & she was going to check for us what she could do about it. After waiting we never got someone to come to our table to even check if we needed anything else,( drinks, box to go or our bill.) We decided to go to the front to pay ourselves & ask if they were able to discount one of our friend’s plate since she did not eat anything out of her plate. The waitress said she had mentioned it to the kitchen and said they couldn’t do anything once we eat out of our plates. They didn’t offer to remake it for her or give her a discount. Anywhere else they would have came to us to ask how our food is tasting and offered to change or make adjustments. Right when leaving, we noticed they had also added their own tips $4.31 (to be exact) and I feel that is the problem and where service declines. The waitress knows they are being tipped and forget to provide good service to the table. I’m sad to say I have not really enjoyed the meals here and less to say the service. I hope improvements to this restaurant come soon, it will be sad to see this restaurant close.

We went for Taco Tuesday and had their special. The food was fantastic!! The service was prompt and pretty good. The building is older, but they’ve done a great job updating the interior. Pretty large and spacious. The fountain drinks were a little on the pricey side at $4.15 (free refills though).

My Review of Marisco’s El Capitan 2.0 – Marshalltown, Iowa

I really wanted to like this restaurant, and I’ve given it more than a fair chance—at least 15 visits. The main reason I kept returning was their orange hot salsa, which is genuinely fantastic. Unfortunately, almost everything else has been inconsistent.

One of the biggest issues is that special requests or substitutions rarely get done correctly. At other Mexican restaurants, ordering a plate with only shrimp has never been a problem. Here, it simply doesn’t work, they bring the full dish as it appears on the menu no matter what you ask. The same goes for substitutions. For example, when I asked to replace rice and beans with French fries, I didn’t get the rice and beans, but I was charged $7 for fries. After several tries, it became clear that modifying anything from the menu is hit-or-miss.

They recently started a Wednesday steak night, so I decided to try the T-bone. One of the steaks listed on the photos wasn’t actually available as in they don’t even offer the steak, but I went ahead and ordered the T-bone medium rare. The server said that was no problem. When it arrived, it was well done. Based on past experiences, I knew complaining wouldn’t change anything, so I ate it and planned to pay for it like always. But when the server checked on me and I mentioned it was overcooked, her response was, “Well, I don’t know what you expected—we’re not a steakhouse.” I agreed, but it was disappointing, especially considering they promote the night as offering T-bones, ribeyes, and tomahawks. I honestly felt bad for another customer who ordered a tomahawk medium rare—I wanted to warn him.

There have also been issues with pricing, especially with chips, salsa, and takeout items. One visit, I was told the salsa was free; another time I paid $5; another time $5.99; and most recently, $18.99—then suddenly discounted to $15 after talking to the manager on the phone. The lack of consistent pricing is frustrating and confusing.

I’ll also note that I’ve never seen a manager in the restaurant, and the service is generally not very attentive with the exception of one good server.

Overall, the food tastes good, but the inconsistencies in service, communication, and pricing are too much to overlook. After many disappointing visits—kept alive only by how much I love the orange salsa—I’ve finally decided not to return. I’m just one customer, but I visited often. I truly hope they figure out their consistency issues, because the potential is there. However, based on my experiences, I don’t see this restaurant succeeding long-term unless major improvements are made.

I called this morning numerous times and no one answered. My husband figured you all were busy so he drove there to place our order. When he got there, there were hardly any clients and the wait staff was just all sitting together in a booth. By the way, we have gone multiple Sundays and it seems like a normal thing to just see wait staff sitting around together. Anyways, he waited for ever to get his order and when we got home they gave me the wrong food. I ordered the huevos con jamón burrito and they gave me the huevos con jamón plate without tortillas. I’m very disappointed with our experience. Plus, the food was very cold even though we live 5 minutes away from the restaurant.
