It’s been said before by none other than SMA restaurant critic, Don Day, ‘muy muy bueno, the freshest seafood in town!’
Caught the day before in Mazatlan and on ice to Mario’s. This sweet Mexican restauranteur has opened seafood restaurants all over Mexico from the west coast to Cancun and now has been a ‘must visit’ place here in San Miguel for sixteen years. Known for his fresh catch, Red Snapper, crab, oysters, lobster to the most succulent scallops.
SMA’s Phantom Gourmet says put it on your list,
Silver Spoons, par excellence in all areas; funky vibe, decor, service and extraordinary artistic gastronomy, worthy of high praise!
It’s been a Wednesday lunch regular for the expat gringo ‘Cast of Characters’ for going on nine years…that’s gotta tell you something
Muchissimo gracias Mario!

The food is fresh and absolutely delicious. We had the “Guachinango entero” red snapper and lobster, both outstanding. My wife especially loved it. Sr. Mario, the owner, is an incredible host, he takes care of every detail and makes you feel truly welcome.

This restaurant is warm and unassuming. Mario welcomed us at the door and took care of us throughout the meal. We both ordered the whole snapper with garlic, which was delicious. Well worth the visit.

This is an ONLY CASH establishment in case you don’t usually read the whole menu, where is clearly written at the back. Service is friendly and efficient. This place has a seafood restaurant vibe: Relaxing and easy going. They welcomed you with some chips and salsa, and a bit of a fish-like mix, nice touch. My mixed cocktail was just ok and so was my michelada. But I saw some other food coming out and it looked pretty good. So I won’t rush back but I’ll give it another try sometime.

Very exaggerated prices for what they offer. Service was extremely slow. We waited 45+ mins for the food to arrive even though we were the only ones there. When the food arrived, it’s honestly nothing special. The prices are exorbitant, even more expensive than some seafood restaurants in Polanco. The average price for each dish is about $300. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. There are much better options.

Also, they only accept cash. No credit cards.

Mario’s Mariscos Frescos is one of those places that instantly feels like home — if home happened to serve ridiculously good seafood. Mario himself sets the tone: welcoming, friendly, and genuinely happy you’re there. I had the oysters and the red snapper, and both were absolutely delicious — fresh, perfectly prepared, and clearly made with pride. The vibe is relaxed, fun, and full of life. Come hungry, stay awhile, and don’t be surprised if you leave smiling and already planning your next visit. This place is a gem.

Love this the best San Miguel seafood place! Service is friendly, Marianna took care of us — remembered me from 1st time there a few wks ago. The food’s fresh, decorated to remind you it’s a family place and seems like a coastal fish place on a coast. Coconut shrimp were freshly prepared. Definitely not the frozen ones that cost more at another SMA place! Coconut rice is sweet
& delicious. Bread wonderfully toasted. They even customized the garlic sauce for my shrimp. Cocktails are awesome and beer is cold. Great for all ages.

Such a cute little place. Unassuming from the road but kitchy and fun.
Mario’s seafood is fresh and well prepared. I always go for the whole fried fish. Service is cheerful and pleasant.
A bit expensive but SMA is far from the ocean so that’s probably got something to do with it.
I’ve been there 3 times… Delicious each time.

What a treat. We have lived in San Miguel for a year and just happened to see Marios on a walk. So happy we decided to stop. Besides Mario being so kind and everyone who works there is so kind and attentive the food is incredible. We had scallop ceviche, fresh oysters, hubby had the spicy shrimp with coconut rice. All was delicious.

I can’t tell you why I waited so long before I tried Mario’s but it was excellent and I will be back. I’m an old gringo with a background in comercial fishing and quite a seafood snob. I went because it highly recommended and I was not disappointed by anything. Fantastic staff and seafood, don’t wait like I did, go today and enjoy.
