This establishment is upscale, but provides an intimate yet modern setting for a delicious gastronomic trip to Peru. A few of us in a party of 8 arrived early, and got to sit at the bar (just big enough to seat the 3 of us) and enjoy some Pisco sours as we waited.
There was a minor mix-up with our large reservation and some ongoing events at the restaurant, but the FOH staff went above and beyond in making sure we were accommodated. And then once seated, we experienced quality and attentive service that looked after the entire table, including two minors. Thank you!
The food itself was tasty beyond expectations. For a party of 8, we did family-style and ordered 6 appetizers, 5 entrées, and 4 desserts. Afterwards, everyone had trouble identifying just one dish that they loved the most, because everything was so good. For me, the standouts were:
– Anticuchos de Corazón: IYKYK, but this was so perfectly grilled that the flavors and textures were irresistibly delicate and satisfying; plus the spicy chimichurri might be one of my favorite things from this entire meal (had to ask for more)
– Branzino con Cremoso Choclo: a well-grilled branzino butterfly fillet, paired with a balanced aji amarillo sauce, and a corn-cheese side.. what’s not to like!
– Churrasco a la Peruana: a tallarín verde dish, perfect for carb-loading before a race; paired with a well-grilled portion of NY steak
– Mousse de Lucuma: a Peruvian establishment is worth its salt (IMO) when even its dessert course options feature uniquely regional flavors
Would very much recommend this place.. can’t wait to find an excuse to visit this part of town again.
The service was equally impeccable. The staff were attentive and welcoming, and Jonathan in particular made the experience exceptional with his professionalism and warmth. We loved every dish and would highly recommend to anyone and hope to be back soon!
POV: local trying out a new restaurant in the Village with afro peruvian roots looking to be spoiled.
The whole time, I kept thinking of the Oceanside spot, the mural there and the decent pricing. MANKA has the potential of filling it up with the after church crowd on the corner if their aggressive pricing turned moderate.
We came here on a weeknight evening and had a reservation. I guess it was good that we did because while the restaurant was empty initially, it filled up quickly. They mainly have patio seating. The ambiance is nice but does not scream opulence that one would expect with the price tag.
The service is great. The servers are all knowledgeable and helpful. We started with the pisco sour and a Sauvignon Blanc. We tried their house sangria for a taste but it felt spicy for some reason and I didn’t like it. I’m glad I didn’t order that. The pisco sour was decent.
For the food, we started with causa limena as a shareable plate, and then got the lomo saltado and the chaufa Manka (chicken) as our entrees. The food came quickly and portions were decent.
The causa limena was deconstructed and delicious. The potatoes were cooked exactly the way you would expect a south Indian dosa (crepe) potato masala to be made. The cold chicken salad was an interesting but positive addition. We enjoyed the whole plate and definitely recommend getting this.
The entrees were good but this is where the pricing comes in. The lomo saltado is priced at $38 and the chaufa at $30 with chicken but $38 with seafood. We felt that the food was not delicious enough to pay this. The lomo saltado was quite tart and the sauce was very strong. You HAVE to add the rice to make it palatable. The meat was cooked to medium to well-done which we liked. The chaufa was a little plain, pretty much like fried rice, but I enjoyed it. It was definitely richer than just a fried rice in other restaurants. I would have liked more red peppers for some heat. The chicken could have been cooked a little more. We did end up taking some of entrees home.
Our experience was good but not worth the final check so if we come back, it will be for the shareables and ceviche only.
