Mango Bay – Brooklyn – a MICHELIN Guide Restaurant
Reviews
The service was impeccable; our waiter was attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. As for the food and drinks, it was nothing short of exceptional My favorite drink was the Brooklyn love .The ackee and saltfish egg rolls were a standout, and the whole fish was cooked to perfection. I also enjoyed a ras pasta dish that was absolutely delicious.
We visited for a friend’s celebration, and the experience was memorable for all four of us. The pricing was reasonable, making it great value for money. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Mango Bay and will definitely return in the future.
Starting off with the decor and ambiance, this felt like dining in an authentic NY townhouse, with art that represented the Black diaspora and the culinary experience one was going to embark on. The spiral staircase, the large windows, and the open space filled the room with some much energy and visual interest. By far one of the most well designed restaurants I’ve been to in some time.
For the food, this is where they really shined. Every app hit harder than the last, our favourite was between the pork ribs and the special, baked oysters. Think oysters Rockefeller but on STEROIDS. The flavor was as if the Caribbean and high society had a baby. And as for the pork ribs, tendernism was an understatement and the pomegranate glaze made me want to walk into the kitchen and bribe the chef for the recipe. The entrees were delicious as well, I will certainly have the braised oxtail again the next time we go, as well as the Ras and Pasta. The lamb shank was delicious but a bit too game-y for me.
Lastly, as for the service they were very attentive despite what seemed like an understaffed evening. We went 2 days before Valentines Day, what I would assume is one of the busiest days of the year, and we had to wait a bit for our waiter to get back to us a few times for orders. Someone from the staff did come check on us periodically so I can tell they take great care of their guests even at their busiest!
Overall, this was a great experience and Mango Bay has quickly shot to the top of my favourite spots to eat in my city.
The ackee and saltfish egg rolls were unreal and it was my first time ever trying ackee. For my main I had the lamb shank with garlic sweet potato mash and it was fall off the bone, melt in your mouth good. The sweet plantains were just as amazing. Every bite was flavorful, comforting, and honestly one of the best meals I have had in a long time.
To begin we ordered the Greene Lit cocktail. This beautifully crafted cocktail blends vodka, prosecco, lime and mint and served as a perfect starter for what was to be an amazing brunch!
For our main courses we ordered the Pepper Prawns and Grits and the Steak and Eggs.
I am a huge shrimp and grits fan and have spent time trying this dish all over the country. I was very curious how Mango Bay would measure up with their unique take that includes a Scotch bonnet sauce as well as a pimento sauce. I can say unequivocally and without hesitation, this is the absolute best shrimp and grits I have ever had in my life!!! The balance of flavor, texture and freshness was only outdone by the masterful preparation of each component of this dish. One might be intimidated by the thought of a Scotch bonnet sauce but this chef has an unparalleled understanding of balance and it is clear that this dish was born from pure artistry and know-how!!! If you are a lover of shrimp and grits, as I am, this one is not to be missed! I would go so far as to say you have not had it right until you’ve had it here.
I am told the steak and eggs were exquisitely prepared and the accompanying spicy aioli highlighted the beautiful, perfectly prepared steak, sunny side up egg and crispy ridged potatoes.
The service was warm and friendly and the restaurant’s overall atmosphere is transportational to the islands. Mango Bay is a true star of Caribbean flavor in Brooklyn. Try it, try it, try it! You will not be disappointed, nor will you find a flavor experience quite like this anywhere else in the city.
My only complaint is the included gratuity of %20 which was odd for our party of two and it was nowhere mentioned on the menu. That’s the only reason for my 4 star review, but overall definitely worth checking out!
My waitress Fayola (hope it’s correct)
Appetizers – 10/10 scallops with caviar, and sliced mango (recommended by waitress)
Dinner- bronzino fish with egg plant on it well seasoned Substitute for rice and peas 9/10 (a hint too salty)
Blueberry musk mule with ginger beer ( recommended by waitress) 10/10
Presentation on everything 10/10
