Social Profile:

History of the Grinder The term Grinder can be traced back to the East Coast where during World War I Italian immigrants set up sandwich shops close to the shipyards. Their freshly backed Italian rolls were filled with generous amounts of meats and cheeses, and were then baked and garnished with lettuce and tomatoes. These super-sized sandwiches were a favorite of the hard working men who ground off rivets on the metal warships. The friendly shop owners referred to these men as grinders, and the ever popular sandwiches also came to be known as GRINDERS.

Casual chain featuring pizzas & sandwiches made with house-baked rolls.

ordered a fred bread, saw a picture of it online and it looked very reasonably sized for the price, however I orderd the “gluten free” option thinking it would be the same. When I got there, this thing was tiny, I mean barely anything. The pictures do no justice, it’s barely the height of a french fry. I paid over $13 for this meal and was left completely unsatisfied. Discussed my experience with management, they didn’t care. Would not recommend, and had I not been pressed for time, would have never paid for such a thing. Will not return to this restaraunt again.

Do not order stromboli. They neglect to inform you that it is not actually stromboli. They put it on grinder bread and call it Stromboli. We ordered a simple Stromboli with only bacon and pepperoni. When you think of Stromboli, you think of hand rolled dough folded over with your toppings inside. They send out a grinder with pepperoni, bacon, green peppers, yellow peppers, and onions without telling us any of that comes standard on their so called Stromboli. We had also ordered a grinder and the bread was identical. When bringing it to their attention, they just brushed it off and didn’t want to deal with it. No apology or solution. Very very disappointed.

Disappointed, again. When I first moved to the area 2 years ago, the pizza was great, however the standards have changed at the Alma location. This review reflects my last 2 visits, as I wrote one off as a isolated incident and decided to try again tonight. For just over $10, I don’t expect perfection… but come on, it’s pizza! A vital part to a pizza is the crust. I have had better pizza crusts with frozen products than this location is serving lately. It is tough, chewy and not risen at all. Having an extensive culinary background myself, these are easy issues to remedy. Check your yeast, proof your dough, don’t overwork or over flour… simple. However after having the same issues my last 2 visits, it is obvious that this product has been deemed acceptable and now the new standard. The St John’s location doesn’t have this issue, so I suppose I’ll have to take my business there going forward. Sad, considering being a chain, even if independently owned, should have the same standards of quality and strive for consistency.

Rustic, but pleasant. No waiting staff here. You order and they bring, but after that, you approach the order desk for any extras…that said, the food was great and it was actually very pleasant. I’m sure the savings was reflected in the price, as that was very reasonable as well.

Very disappointed that issues with deliveries has now caused us to order my husband’s Thursday lunches from somewhere else. Previous to this, two weeks in a row, the order was incorrect with no accountability on their end when we literally ordered the same thing every week. We spent over $20 a week every week, so that’s a bigger loss to this business than it is us. Also, the person who takes orders is rude. Get it together guys and don’t employ ppl who don’t care if your company loses money and/or loyal customers.

Every year when we come to see our family in nearby Ithaca, we eat at Mancino’s. I love the Stromboli grinder (grinder is just a cool name for a sub sandwich if you’re not familiar with the term.) I always get a whole and take the second half with me to eat for lunch the next day. I love this place. Great pizza, pasta, and grinders. See you next year!
