Social Profile:

In 2003, we opened Mama’s on the Half Shell. Our opening day was the realization of five years of dreaming, discussing and collecting. As native “Baltimoreans,” we felt Baltimore lacked a real seafood restaurant. Because of our love for the restaurant business, our favorite pastime is to dine out, but we struggled to find the real taste of Baltimore seafood. We missed the classics, the ones that we could count on as kids, such as Connolly’s & Hausner’s, the one we would visit with friends from out of town who say “take us to a real Baltimore seafood house.” We missed that and wanted to bring it back. That’s why we created Mama’s on the Half Shell.

Popular tavern offering ample portions of stick-to-your-ribs seafood & a big oyster selection.

Tried the shrimp appetizer, crab cake sandwich, and the seafood club. Everything was so good – the onions that accompanied the shrimp were perfectly cooked and covered in delicious old bay.

It was my first time at Mama’s On the Half Shell for dinner, and I was so looking forward to try the crab soup. Other than the soup was too spice—which for me it is to disguise of a not well seasoned dish specially a seafood.

We’re glad we stopped into Baltimore on our way back north from a vacation and found Mama’s. This was midday on a sweltering Saturday afternoon. 4 hours of driving, we sat outside because we had our puppy with us. Otherwise, we would have enjoyed the air conditioning and atmosphere of the indoor bar. Despite the heat, the maitre d, server, and other staff were highly attentive, quick and very friendly. We were even given an icy virgin crush, to take the edge off the heat. Thank you so much! Our dog was served a bowl of water of her own. I ordered the crab club sandwich which was humongous. Three layers, with shrimp salad. Salad that was not overly “mayonnaisey”, a layer of crab cake and a layer of thick cut bacon. Lettuce and tomato on all layers provided more flavor and crunch. After eating about a quarter of the sandwich, I discarded most of the bread in favor of tasting the flavors of the shrimp, crab and bacon. The sandwich was very good but I may have enjoyed the crab cake more had I ordered it as a solo star of the sandwich. Maybe next time. If you want a sandwich loaded with goodies, order this. If you want to test out the crab cake, order it as a sandwich up its own or the entree. The fries were delicious. My husband ordered a oyster cool boy which he gobbled up happily along with his crab chowder. We enjoyed our meal thoroughly. As a bonus, it’s across the street from a fantastic pie and coffee place. Sweet neighborhood too.

Amazing! The food, service, etc. were all delicious. I had the crab cake with mashed potatoes and asparagus and I can’t wait to go back. My friends had shrimp and grits and the grilled cheese with crab dip. They loved all of it!

This was one of the worst customer service experiences I have had at a restaurant. I ordered the Maryland crab soup. The soup was warm, not hot, but the lump crab meet was ice cold. This ruined the experience for me. When I informed the manager he told me they didn’t do anything wrong and they don’t take food back that customers don’t like. I have NEVER been to a reputable dining establishment that doesn’t take food back. Further, they tried to convince me this was typical. On top of all that, they charged me a mandatory 18% gratuity because it was after 9pm. They also charge a 3% fee for ALL credit card transactions! The fish and chips was greasy and fell apart. The Mac and cheese tasted like butter noodles with bread crumbs. The salmon was good and the fries were ok. We enjoyed the green beans. Drinks were decent. I would not recommend spending your money here. There are much better seafood locations in walking distance.

The waffles Foster was amazing. It tasted like a funnel cake. The seafood club was amazing. The sandwich is enough for two to share. My only complaint is I requested no bacon, however it was added. I had to return it, but they took care of it. The service and ambience is excellent. I will definitely return again and again.

Returned and had the best lollipop lamb chops ever! Seasoned well and grilled to perfection. Not over cooked at all. Mear was tender and juicy. Loved every morsel of them!
