Restaurant Review: Mam Serves the Most Exciting Vietnamese …
Reviews
The staff was friendly and helpful in explaining what we were eating and how Vietnamese people typically eat the items. Each dish we had was fabulous in its own way. I particularly enjoyed the eggplant and fried vegetable rolls.
I don’t think I have ever had Vietnamese food, but based on my experience at Mam I will plan to sample more.
Service 4/5
Ambiance 3.5/5
Value 3/5
Mam truly delivers on homey, authentic Vietnamese vibes, especially with the traditional seating setup. Their menu is highly unique and adventurous, you won’t find these traditional dishes at many other Vietnamese spots, which is a big win for authenticity
Didn’t appreciate the portion & value. While the food is conceptually interesting, the portion sizes are notably small. For example, the Pho portion is roughly half the standard size found elsewhere, yet the price is approximately 40% higher (even accounting for the no-tipping policy)
Dishes We Tried:
Đậu Tấm Hành (Fried Tofu) (4/5): My personal favorite and the least “fried” dish. The combination of scallions and sauce worked perfectly with the great tofu texture
Stuffed Snails (3.5/5): Unique presentation, but the flavor leaned heavily toward the pork filling rather than the snail
Pho Bo (3.5/5): Loved the noodles and the beef quality was decent, but the bowl size was alarmingly small
Chả Nhái Fried Frog & Pork Pancake (3.5/5): Good fried texture, though the overall flavor was just okay and didn’t love that it contained bones even though it was called out in the menu
Tom Chien (Fried Prawns) (3/5): A unique dish for sure. My friends loved the chip-like crispiness, but I struggled with eating the whole shrimp. (Caution: Chew slowly; the shells can be poky!)
Bun Dau Dac Biet (3/5): An adventurous but traditional dish with pork belly, intestines, and blood sausage. A fun DIY experience, but not my personal favorite flavor profile. This was also my friends fave cuz she likes the traditional stuff!
My favorite has to be the bún đậu mắm tôm — authentic, funky in the best way, and served with all the classic sides . And don’t skip the tamarind sauce — it’s sour, sweet, and addicting . Everything together tastes like home but with NYC vibes .
Highly recommend bringing friends so you can order a bunch of dishes and share!
This restaurant is truly a hidden gem! The moment you walk in, the charming and unique atmosphere sets it apart from typical Vietnamese eateries. It’s clear the owner has a strong vision, creating a cozy and special space.
Just to be clear, if it is simply for the food, this is an absolute 5 stars and beyond. The chicken cartilage is absolutely sublime and is a match made in heaven for beer (which they do not sell). The fried shrimp was also crazy soft-shelled and flavorful. And the complements continue for each and every dish. Every dish is a creation and has a statement to make. The premier blood sausage, intestine, vermicelli cubes, and basil leaves was inetresting. You get to taste 4~5 different pieces of protein with fermented fish or shrimp sauce. Some combinations were wonderful while others felt a bit experimental. But it does not matter. The entire food experience is unique, punchy, and fabulous.
Now where the experience starts to fall apart is the seating situation. I totally understand that it is the Vietnamese street experience, with plastic chairs and tables. All of this is good. Except the street they are on reeks of urine thanks to the park across the street and a construction site. They are rapidly expanding indoor space to the building space next to them but it is an absolute mess. It almost feels like they’ve taken over a 150ft section of the block. I’m sure there’s a slightly better way to strike the balance with street nostalgia and a somewhat comfortable place to enjoy their creations.
Service was on the slower side but also empathize as the servers need to run around 3 or 4 separate shops as well as a busy street, navigating the wait lines.
Mam is absolutely a unique and worthy experience. We loved it. And cheering for the establishment to expand while addressing the sanitary problems.
Warning: if you are sitting in those small plastic stools outdoors, be prepared for knee pain,
