I found this place a few years ago and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food and the beautiful view of the water. I stopped in a few days ago and the place was practically empty. My first thought was ” well it had to be the weather” so my boyfriend and I sat down at a table and a blonde waitress took our order. I initially got iced tea while my boyfriend got a soda. I tasted the tea and it tasted soured, like it had been sitting out way too long so when she came back I switched it for soda as well. We order 2 appetizers ( the cheese balls and the pork) they were both barely warm. I bit into one of the cheese balls and a portion was cold. We almost left at that point but we hadn’t eaten all day and we’re starving and still had a long drive home. The waitress kept going back to what looked like a bar area and sitting on her phone. She came back and took our order. I got the crab cake and Mallards salad. The crab cake which looked more like a crab ball was decent but not AS good as I remember it being before. It didn’t take too long to come out and again wasn’t that hot but edible. My boyfriend got the lemon cake. That was good. The owner did come over and say hello which was nice but again I didn’t bring anything up because I was hungry and grateful to eat at that point. The only reason I’m mentioning this is that the quality seems to have gone down considerably since the first time I was there. Cold weather or not or slow night or not you should always give the BEST quality food and BEST service especially if we were the only customers there at the time. I’m on the fence if I will come back or not. I don’t think at this point I would drive out of my way. I know of another restaurant in Maryland I can get a delicious crab cake with much more enthusiastic service. To the owner I hope you will put in some extra training for your servers as I was once a server as well.

After stopping here many times I finally found them open and not full.. it’s a cold winter day so was looking forward to warming up and taking a break in a 9 hr solo trip. Wow.. what a disappointment.. I was offered a table upstairs by the very lovely hostess — being the ONLY person there I joked I would be forgotten. No joke in the end. I was brought an overly sweet tea – but could not get it changed since no one ever came back. A second person brought the food and just plopped it on the table .. no asking me if I needed anything etc. didn’t get to the tea… thought my server would appear. I ordered crab cake sandwich .. I got a crab cake ball sitting on a cold hard bun with a bag of chips. No other additions for the sandwich.. zip zero on the plastic basket plate. Oh yes, there was about 1 TBS of “slaw” in a little plastic cup with a lid. Made ahead I guess. Homemade ? Not sure. Did not taste like it. No one asked if I wanted tarter or cocktail — I had to ask when it was plopped down. The tarter tasted like industrial mayo from a jar. Terrible. Wanted a drink to go but no server. I had to wait for someone to come to the front to even get a check … once again it was the very nice hostess. I told her no one ever came to check on me. She was so sorry. After several years looking forward to trying this restaurant I was sadly disappointed I spent $24 for what I received. Crab cake was decent but it needed to be presented as the star of the house … dressed up a little… maybe homemade tarter .. maybe nice lettuce.. Maybe a fresh brioche bun. It felt more like an afterthought and I felt my patronage was not appreciated nor needed.

We had such a perfect evening here. The service and atmosphere were spot on and the food was exceptional. My wife had salmon in a mustard crust that was absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked. I had the crab cakes and they were by far the best I’ve had. Flavorful and moist. The deserts were spot on as well. Crème brûlée was perfect and the lime and raspberry smith island cake was Lucious.
We didn’t get to hear the chef play and sing, maybe next time. We will be back!

We arrived by boat and had a wonderful meal. As good as the food was, the service by Lynn was even better. She brought water and treats for our dogs, held our bill open while we tidied the boat and then came back for dinner.
Definitely looking forward to our next visit.

So so good we ate multiple days in a row! The server we had was so kind and made our dinner enjoyable. If back in the area, I absolutely will be back. Everything was so good including the drinks!

The location is perfect, Mallards is inside a beautiful old historic building; the interior was nice and cozy and you could see outside towards the wharf. The service was attentive and friendly, giving great recommendations!
We loved the specialty crab cakes and the glazed scallops with the mashed potatoes were to die for! The pulled pork on top of sweet potato bread was very tasty too! Good wine selection, all in all a phenomenal experience! Will definitely visit again!

FOOD
Excellent. Our Party of Four visit was during lunch. Stuck with basically handhelds and appetizers. Of course a few beverages.
I teetered on getting the locally caught Rockfish, but went with the Notorious P.I.G., only because the name was so catchy. Nice pulled pork sandwich, with tasty BBQ on the side. My cousin had the BLFGT which was a nice sized sandwich which he enjoyed it thoroughly.
Other recommended table items: fries with Old Bay and parmesan, Firecracker Shrimp, Shore Boy Burger.
We had an array of mixed drinks, all tasty and well made. None were too strong to drink nor overly sweet.
SERVICE
Emily. Ask for her. Super nice local, super pleasant and very attentive. Had s good sense of humor as well. Ask her about a couple of the local bar names. Seems to be a theme.
ATMOSPHERE
Charming. You enter to a museum of sorts and entering the dining area, you felt like you were taken back in time. Nautical theme without being over the top. Nice view of the Creek. Small dining area but we didn’t feel cramped at all.
COST
Very reasonable!
MISC
Stopped on our way back to NJ from Virginia Beach. Thank you brother Jeff for the recommendation.
Truly a hidden gem. Fingers crossed they don’t update or renovate with the times!
Looking forward to our next visit when down south.
Enjoy!
Peace…
