Reviews
We asked for drinks water and a snapple both were lukewarm as the fridge did not appear to be on. So on a scale of 1 to 10 I would give it a 6.
A brief survey of my public reviews will reveal that I barely, if ever, give a five-star review. However, with “Make Love To Your Taste Buds” or “dah’s Soul Food Cafe”, I’m rather hard-pressed not to give a five-star review.
After briefly surveying their menu, I opted out of my standard soulfood go-to, i.e. chicken wings, and was torn between the turkey wings and the pepper steak. After briefly consulting the restaurateur for her opinion, I settled upon the pepper steak platter; which came with two sides, in addition to the white rice that the pepper steak and gravy was served over. I did, however, opt for my standard soulfood sides, candied yams and baked macaroni & cheese. In addition, I ordered a side of collard greens.
The ambience of the restaurant was very welcoming. It was warm, cozy, homey, quaint, and the three ladies inside (perhaps three generations), were very hospitable. I received my food promptly, and without consequence. And so thusfar, they’ve outdone themselves in the service and atmosphere catoregories; five out of five.
But what you all are really interested in is the food. “Sojourner, how’s the darn food?” Okay, okay, I’m getting there…
Well, per the aforementioned five stars, clearly it was a smash hit. The details, observe: As far as the entree is concerned, I’ve always thought the Chinese were the originators of pepper steak, but after tasting dah’s, I’m beginning to believe the Chinese copied it from us black folk. The steak was tender and savory, with just enough gravy to coat the steak and rice properly. The rice was just right. The baked macaroni and cheese tasted the way baked macaroni and cheese should taste. The yams seemed fresh and wholesome, and not over candied. But out of everything, one thing truly stood out to me, surprisingly, above everything else: the collard greens. When I first tasted the steamy, savory greens, my mind immediately went to my childhood, from when my grandmother made collard greens. They seemed to be exactly the same. I believe the gauge for how good greens are, if they can be eaten as a meal and satisfy, entirely on there own. Dah’s can! Honestly, the next time I swing by there, which won’t be too long from now, I’ll be getting a big bowl of greens, and maybe a piece of cornbread with them. I don’t need anything else. That’s soul food.
Its a small place and I expected a family welcoming vibe. One young lady and an older woman was present. I thought it was a sit in chill place but its more of a take-out spot, with seating of course. The chairs are not made for curvy people so definitely a grab and go. As we placed our order, the older lady began to cook. The best thing was the curry chicken bowl
Everything else from the mac-n-cheese to the garlic parm fried chicken, and the fried ball with meat and rice was a no go. The bang bang shrimp was cool. I encourage them ways to grow because there is potential. I’d go back for the curry chicken bowl.
