Wow! This place exudes a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The dishes are incredibly tasty, bursting with flavor and generously portioned. The drinks are refreshingly made with freshly squeezed orange and lemon juice. Everything is homemade, and the attentive and friendly service adds to the overall experience. The bartender, Marco, is exceptional, providing great recommendations based on your taste preferences. Probably the best Mexican food I’ve had in years. This is going to be my new go-to spot after this great first impression!! Just amazing!!!! If you’re in the area, check them out.

Maiz & Barro means Corn and Clay. I had to ask on my second visit to this south side Mexican restaurant owned by chef Mario Lopez and pastry chef Elvia Granados, a husband and wife team. The food is just outstanding here. Mexican food can be so pedestrian and after my first visit, I knew I had to return to taste more on the menu. Everything they make is elevated. On my first visit, we tried the barria tacos, chicken tacos and fajitas. Every dish has so much attention to detail. I asked for my steak on the fajitas rare and it was. So nice. On my second visit, I tried the Pezole soup on the specials menu and it tasted like so much love and time and care went into this soup. It was also enough for two meals. My husband tried the chilaquiles and the chips were so saucy and delicious.
I must admit that I once worked with the owner of this restaurant, Mario, at an Italian restaurant called Vivo almost 30 years ago. It was a real hotspot in the day. I love that he now has a place of his own and it is busy and loved by the community. I’ll be here as often as I can in the future and I hope you will be too.

I need a 6th star to rate this place. Amazing food. Starting off with the chips and salsa… warm chips and amazing salsa. Had the sizzling fajita with steak. The steak had a terrific char on it while still being tender. The veggies and meat had perfect seasoning and flavors. The homemade tres leches cake was killer.
Beyond the food the restaurant is lively. Large screen TV over the bar, music, clean floor and tables, plenty of parking. The whole staff makes the extra effort and really shows their pride in the place. Don’t let the strip mall dissuade you from the quality of food and service of the restaurant. I can’t imagine being disappointed eating here.

Great Quality Food, Great Service, Great atmosphere!

Maiz & Barro Mexican Grill has an inviting and family feel. Everyone are very nice and aim to ensure you have a great experience. The food is authentic and very tasty. The steak burrito was awesome. Very tender with a smoky grill flavor. The Mexican rice also had a great flavor. Every bite was full of flavor. The Red Sangria is excellent…not too sweet… just right

The hostesses have excellent customer service skills and you feel very welcomed upon entering the restaurant.

Overall, the desserts look very appealing in the glass case when you walk in.
To celebrate my birthday, I ordered the apple pie. The pie crust was flaky and buttery. It melted in my mouth. The apples were flavorable but a little crunchy. I would suggests cooking them a little longer to ensure more tender.

The prices are a little high. However, for good authentic; quality food, it’s well worth it.

This is a great place to dine in an intimate setting, carry out, celebrate special occasions etc. This is definitely a place I would visit again.

Delicious food, a friendly atmosphere, and amazing fresh drinks made this place stand out! We were welcomed with warm chips and tasty salsa, which set the tone for a great meal. The fresh margaritas are absolutely amazing, perfectly balanced and refreshing. Every dish was seasoned to perfection and served in generous portions. This is hands down my favorite Mexican spot.

Amazing dinner experience. I was in from out of town and came across this place. Had the opportunity to sit at the bar and talk to what seemed to be the owner. He explained how everything is fresh and made from scratch. The Quesabirillia was amazing. The chips and salsa were next level compared to most Mexican restaurants. You will not be disappointed!

The food is always incredible. I’ve tried and enjoyed most of the menu. The specials are also always worth a try. There has been only one item I was slighty off about. Don’t get me wrong, it was good, except the balance was off. My torta that day had too much bun, not enough meat. I’ll have to try it again.

The atmosphere is fun, colorful, and engaging. The place is loud and welcomes an “outdoor” voice. Groups and children are welcome.

I’ve edited my service rating which has only gotten better. Everyone is friendly, welcoming, and polite. Personally, I’m great with faces, and it’s nice to get a familiar nod from time to time.

This is a very good quality Mexican food place. The attention to detail is excellent. They are very attentive to cleaning and looking after their customers. They make you feel at home. It was pretty empty when I was there. But the atmosphere was still busy and it started to fill up as the time went by. I had the Torta sandwich and the attn to detail on the build of the sandwich was excellent. Flavor was also very good. The chips and salsa were great too. Wife had enchiladas and they were a bit spicy but the meat was super soft and tasty, as was the rice. We enjoyed the place very much and will be back very soon.

Everything was delicious. Strawberry margarita was so good, I had two. Tried a few different tacos, all were amazing. Their homemade salsa is now one of my favorites.

Hands down, this is the best restaurant I’ve been to in the south side suburbs. No hype at all — the food is absolutely delicious, the drinks are good, and the vibe is just right.

Special shoutout and all my respect to the owner, who happens to be my namesake. I had the opportunity to speak with her, and you can genuinely feel her passion for food and hospitality.

If you go, you have to try the coconut cake. It’s truly an indulgence — soft, rich, and melts in your mouth.

The atmosphere is warm and family-friendly, exactly what I look for when dining out with my kids.
