We were excited to try this place, as it had good reviews and was extremely busy. We had to by the bar to wait for a table. Once we were seated, we ordered samosas, a half order tandoori chicken, garlic naan, and butter chicken.

The samosas very oily, we were not able to finish them. The tandoori chicken was the best dish we had. It was served on a sizzling hot platter and the meat was delicious. The butter chicken left much to be desired. It tasted more like a tomato sauce than any butter chicken I have had. They brought out the wrong naan and by the time they brought us the correct one, we were halfway done with our meal. We also requested medium for all of our dishes and they had no spice at all. Rice is an extra charge here as well which disappointed me, as the dishes are already pricy.

My wife and I along with a friend were traveling through Chicago last week and we had a few different places we wanted to eat. Indian Food was a bit of a compromise for us to go to, and Maharaj was recommended by an actual live person we knew in the area and some good reviews. The food was very very good, fresh, and hot. We had a variety of things and they were all good, the Naan, the Mango Lasse, the rice pudding, and the masala’s. One bummer which was why it got a 4 on food, was the lamb sausage skewer/kabob was bone dry and spicy, but not the flavorful kind of spicey. I have had lamb prior and enjoyed it, but it was a disappointment…. We did have other things that were all good. So, we would for sure go back again, and not order the lamb!

This is my second time to Maharaj. I ordered the butter and curry chicken along with plain Naan. I love this restaurant, The flavors and seasonings are subtle yet intense. I’ve added this particular restaurant to my go to places for Indian cuisine. The chicken in both dishes are surprisingly tender and very moist. The Naan Isn’t as rustic as I’d like, but it’s very buttery and flavorful. The service is exact and prompt. If you visit this restaurant, you will be pleased. You can’t go wrong here.

Honest Review – Worst Experience in Chicago

I’ve been living in Chicago for more than 10 years, and I have never had such a bad dining experience. The food at this restaurant was extremely disappointing and honestly felt unsafe to eat.
I started with samosas, which were stale, oily, and had a bad smell. They were not crisp at all—more like puri stuffed with poorly made potato bhaji. I immediately returned them and informed the manager. Even they agreed something was wrong and apologized.
Then we received our main course—within just 5 minutes, which already felt suspicious.
I had ordered:
• Chicken Biryani
• Paneer Butter Masala
• Naan
• Mango Lassi
The chicken biryani was cold, clearly not reheated properly.
The paneer butter masala was too oily, overly spicy, and lacked any real flavor.
The naan was thick, undercooked, and tasted like half-cooked white flour.
Overall, the entire meal felt stale, rushed, and not prepared with basic hygiene. The food was so bad that we tasted only a single bite and then left both the food and the restaurant.
This is my genuine experience—if you value your health and don’t want to waste your money, I strongly recommend avoiding this restaurant.
It was honestly one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in Chicago.

We visited this restaurant during our Christmas trip and had been in the area for three days—by far, this was the best Indian food we’ve had in the Chicago.

We were a group of six and called around 9:15 PM to check if we could arrive by 9:30 PM, and they kindly agreed. When we arrived, the host remembered our call and welcomed us very gracefully, which immediately made us feel valued.

A special mention to Meera, who served us that evening—she truly made our experience memorable. Her dish recommendations were spot on: Paneer Bhurji, Kadai Paneer, and Dal Tadka—each dish was outstanding in taste and quality. She also suggested kulfi; we initially ordered fewer portions, but after tasting them, we wished we had ordered more. Both mango and kesar kulfi were absolutely delicious.

Overall, it was an excellent dining experience—amazing food, a welcoming host, and heartfelt service from Meera, whose suggestions completely satisfied our taste buds. Highly recommended!

Maharaja Grill, located near Van Buren in downtown Chicago, serves up flavorful Indian dishes at wallet-friendly prices. The place has a lively vibe, friendly staff, and authentic flavors — from creamy tikka masala to spicy goat curry. Best part? You can enjoy a hearty vegetarian meal for just around $15, making it one of the cheapest delicious finds in the area.

The food combo for lunch is a value for money. The atmosphere of the restaurant is great. The food taste is average. I would suggest to go a spice level higher than your preferred level. Staff is a bit rude and hasty in taking away dishes even while you are still eating. Prior reservations are required to eat at the restaurant.

The food was incredible, each dish was packed with flavor. The chicken Tandoori was super tender, the biryani was full of spices, and the curries were just the right amount of creamy. Plus, the naan was soft and fresh.

What really made the experience stand out, though, was the service. The staff was so friendly and made sure everything was perfect without hovering. It felt like they genuinely cared about making sure I had a good time. If you’re looking for some great Indian food and great service, I definitely recommend giving Maharj Indian Grill a try!
