Social Profile:

Magpie Café & Coffeehouse has been a beloved gathering place in Decorah since 1996. What started as a small café on Winnebago Street has grown into a community staple on Water Street, serving scratch-made breakfast and lunch with locally sourced ingredients. Proudly brewing Colectivo Coffee, Magpie also offers specialty espresso drinks, teas, cocktails, ciders, beer, kombucha, and more. Through challenges like the pandemic and a fire, Magpie has remained resilient, giving back to the town it loves. Whether you’re a regular or visiting for the first time, you’re always welcome here. ❤️☕

Old building with super high ceiling. The resturant was narrow but very deep. Lots of booth seats with a few chair/table seats. The menu leaned heavily on healthier choices. Full coffee shop choices as well as food. Order is placed up front at a cashier. The food and drinks are all made as ordered. The food was made promptly. The smells where very appetizing. The food arrived after a short wait time. Very fresh and healthy food. Would recommend.

Friendly staff, cozy atmosphere and excellent food and drinks! We stopped in for breakfast and coffee, and I’m convinced there’s not a bad item on the menu. The biscuits and gravy were particularly excellent, and the Irish coffee was definitely a kick in the teeth to start the day. I only wish we lived closer so we could visit more often!

Magpie’s Coffeehouse – Charming, Busy, Worth a Stop

Locally owned with tons of character, this spot in Decorah’s historic district serves excellent coffee and fresh, flavorful breakfasts. We came on a Sunday morning (thanks to Max & Sarah at Dixie’s Biergarten for the tip!) and loved the vibe — even if the entry area gets a little chaotic during peak times.

Ambiance:
Located in a beautiful, walkable area with parallel parking and local shops. Inside, it’s cozy but the foyer is tight, especially with window seating right where customers line up to order. Ordering at the counter and grabbing a menu from the far wall can be tricky when it’s crowded. Staff were friendly and upbeat, and we were given a buzzer for coffee pickup.

Food & Drinks:
• Coffees: Iced S’mores Cold Brew (Kim) and a White Zombie (me) — both excellent.
• Food: Biscuits & Gravy ($9) with a perfect over-easy egg ($2.40), plus an omelette ($13) with portabella (+$1.25), avocado (+$0.80), and sourdough toast. Fresh, flavorful, and satisfying.

We sat in the back seating area, grabbed water from the self-serve station, enjoyed our meal, then bussed our own table.

Bottom Line:
Bustling and friendly with great food and drinks — definitely worth a visit when in Decorah.

Note: You’ll be prompted for a tip when paying, before any food is served, in a counter-order/self-serve model. Not a deal-breaker, but worth knowing.

We came down for the day , happen to see this cafe and decided to give it a try! I had the Palisades and i give it a 10/10. The dill sauce is amazing i wanted to dip my pits in it The staff were amazing and sweet/helpful! The atmosphere was relaxing and i enjoyed seeing whom i assume were regulars interacting with staff as well! Perfect lunch before i was proposed to!

We were in Decorah overnight and were looking for a place with good coffee and breakfast. This hit both categories very well. Pumpkin latte was perfect, not too sweet. Lemon blueberry scone was outstanding. Omelette and avocado toast were very good too. Staff made us feel welcome and at home even though we were out of towners!

Such a cozy vibe and it’s got quite a bit of seating really. The coffee is great and the food is delicious. Lots of good options. My son had the French toast and it came with fresh blueberries and granola

Great food as always, but I miss the chalkboard menu.. really gave this place that additional feeling of cozy and comfort. Also, the music here varies so much. Would be nice if it was more coffee-house appropriate.

Great locally owned deli style sandwich/wrap/salad option in Decorah. Kitchen turned out lunch for our party of 6 quickly. Everything everyone ordered was delicious.

We love this coffee shop for food, drinks, and how kid-friendly the space is. Lots of gluten free options and very safe and knowledgeable staff about food allergies. One of the few places in town I trust with gluten free eating.
