Social Profile:

The first Macado’s restaurant was opened in 1978 by Richard Macher in downtown Roanoke, Virginia. It soon became popular for its eclectic ambiance of cartoon, antique, and local nostalgic decor, as well as its wide array of hearty yet modestly-priced sandwiches, subs, and entrees. Popular with the college crowd, the restaurant opened additional locations near Virginia Tech, Radford University, and Roanoke College. Locations were added at the rate of one or two per year, including those in neighboring West Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. Macado’s just recently opened its newest location in Winchester, Virginia.

Food was good. Serving sizes are huge! Service was so-so, but they were busy. I had to ask for boxes and the check 3xs. The bathroom on the first floor could have been cleaner. The floor and door are gross. This restaurant is not accessible to someone in a wheelchair.

Absolutely worst service I have ever had in a restaurant. Our servers name was Amber M, she didn’t check on us 1 single time during the hour and a half we were there. We were out of drinks, didn’t get silverware, had to get our own napkins. Had to go get our own water refills from the bar…. From a pitcher that was sitting on the counter. Asked another server for silver ware after waiting for 10+ minutes for our server to come back. This one’s name was Crystal she said “ no just ask your server”.This place is a joke. Also want to add the place was not busy at all. Our server had 3 tables. Order was also wrong on the table behind us and the table beside us was having to wave down our server. We ended up chatting about how bad the service was with them.

We always enjoy Mac’s food! We’ve eaten at several of their locations, and our experience has been favorable – they all hold to a good quality standard of food and service. While we were eating, we noticed that the waitresses were busy wiping and cleaning behind the counter. They were very friendly and our order came fairly quickly. But, we give this location a 3 star because of cleanliness. Granted, it’s an old building located in an historic town, decorated with the college crowd in mind. But, even then, the atmosphere should add to the dining experience, and this location with dirty floors, stairs, walls and bathrooms, did not. It’s long overdue for a facelift!

I was in the mood for a good Italian sub. I had not eaten at Macados since the pandemic started, and was so looking forward to it. I ordered the Italian sub to go and wanted it cold. When I arrived home I opened the box and was surprised at the subs appearance and how it had changed so much since my last Italian sub at Macados. It was much smaller than I remembered with a different sub roll. No worries I could handle the changes. I took off the top of the sub to see if the meats were the same. I was flabbergasted at the condition of the meats. The prosciutto was hard, old, discolored and looked more like scraps. The pepperoni was old, stale and hard around the edges. The ham appeared to be fresh. They left off the lettuce and tomato. The onion was like a rubber band and the banana pepper was the same. They did not include oil and vinegar but put some strange sauce, which appeared to be thousand island dressing on the sub. I took the meat off the sub, snapped a pic of it and posted at this site. Then I threw it in my dog’s bowl. Which I also included in a posted pic. If you prepare and serve food like that to your customers it is quite apparent that you don’t give a darn about your customers and take no pride in your profession. The management needs to do their jobs.

This is not a review of one experience, but one of the past 5-7 times I have given this restaurant a chance. The last time I came here I ordered a beer on tap by name but the bartender gave me the wrong beer out of a can. She didn’t know the beer I ordered by name despite it being one of the 4 beers on tap. I ordered a sandwich which was supposed to have Sauerkraut, 1000 island dressing and Swiss. It only came out with Swiss cheese. We still had an okay experience until it took us 25 minutes to close out our tab for a party of 2.
