The first Macado’s restaurant was opened in 1978 by Richard Macher in downtown Roanoke, Virginia. It soon became popular for its eclectic ambiance of cartoon, antique, and local nostalgic decor, as well as its wide array of hearty yet modestly-priced sandwiches, subs, and entrees. Popular with the college crowd, the restaurant opened additional locations near Virginia Tech, Radford University, and Roanoke College. Locations were added at the rate of one or two per year, including those in neighboring West Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. We stumbled acros Macado’s in Salem, VA and stopped for lunch. The restaurant wasn’t crowded and when we walked in, there was no one at the hostess station. So, rather than wait, we sat at the bar. The bartender was awesome (in forgot her name but our receipt says “AM B”). I got a Dr. Watson (grilled chicken and ham on a bagel). Linda got Grilled chicken Mac &Cheese w/ broccoli. Both orders were up quickly and the food was excellent! They don’t scrimp on portions either. It was an excellent meal!

This place is absolutely phenomenal and never disappoints. We go to my husband’s childhood home at least once a year and we HAVE to stop and eat here at least once. We have also eaten here 3 time in one weekend before as well . The atmosphere is really cool and the food is just incredible.

Great place! I don’t know why it doesn’t have higher reviews. Service and food were both very high quality and a good price. We had the titanic, club, and big city jazz – phenomenal! You MUST get the homemade chips. Our waiter – jenna – was great. I would recommend this to others and would easily return.

We had a party of ten, were seated at the front window in two large tables and had plenty of attention from both the personable young man who seated us (I didn’t get his name) and our server, Ava. She had a lot of personality, kept checking on us, asked about our Thanksgiving and was just genuinely nice. The food and drinks were great…their burgers are Huge! Thank you for a great ending to our Sunday evening.

My daughter planned to take me out to lunch for my birthday. We chose Macado’s Salem. It was past the lunch rush (closer to 1) and the restaurant was not busy. We waited to be seated but not a soul was in sight. Waited….waited…..finally a girl appeared from behind the “employees only” door. She did not make eye contact with us. She did not say a word even though she was well aware we were there and had been waiting. She grabbed some supplies and disappeared behind the door again. The long wait during a non-peak time was bothersome enough but to be virtually ignored when we are in plain sight? Unbelievable. So, we left and went to Mac and Bobs. We were immediately greeted and sat; the server came over in less than 30 seconds, greeted us and took our drink order. And we enjoyed an outstanding lunch. If this embarrassment is what Macado’s considers acceptable service, they ought to be ashamed. I’d say thanks for ruining my birthday, but to be honest because of your sloppy service – or lack thereof – we discovered a place that will be our new go-to in Salem. Pat yourselves on the back for working so hard to lose customers, because that was your only success today.

Stopped on our way through on a trip. Food was better than expected given the HUGE menu. The place was very busy with both take out orders and dining. Seems to be a lot of regulars here! I think we got lucky with the parking, able to find a spot close by on the street.

Stopped by the Salem location for dinner. Was seated promptly. Very happy that they are doing such a great job with distance seating. Had a wonderful server that was friendly, helpful and attentive. It was a very relaxing, enjoyable dinner. Please wear a mask inside. They also offer outdoor seating. ***UPDATE 6/15/21. Relaxed mask requirements if you are vaccinated. Stopping by before dinner rush. Service was horrible. Food was horrible. Server never even asked us if we needed boxes to take our food home, and there was plenty left. Just overall not a good experience. I’ve noticed the service and quality has consistently been deteriorating for the past couple of years.

The food is good but not amazing. Everything always takes forever to get to the table. You won’t get your drink refilled. And honestly, its every location. If getting anything to go, check your food before you leave and get home to eat.
