Mabel White started in the restaurant business with Mabel’s Lunchroom in 1953 on College Drive in Decorah. Students from nearby Luther College were regular customers. Mabel often let them make their own sandwiches and change at the register. One fateful day, a student asked if he could make himself a “pizza.” Mabel agreed without knowing what a pizza was or understanding how this would change her life and eventually become an icon of Decorah. In 1968, Mabel paid tribute to the item that attracted overwhelming attention and renamed her restaurant Mabe’s Pizza. Over a short time, Mabe’s Pizza grew a reputation for delicious pizza cut into squares with made-from-scratch crust and sauce paired with sincere customer service.

Longtime family-run pizzeria turning out thin-crust pies in a laid-back, old-school atmosphere.

We were in Decorah visiting Luther College and were told that Mabe’s Pizza was the place to go. It did not disappoint. Nestled right in the downtown strip, it is a cozy little pizza parlor with tables in the middle surrounded by booths.

We ordered the Deluxe pizza and a pepperoni/green pepper pizza. Both came out fast and were absolutely delectable. We all commented on how good the crust was along with the sauce. We finished it off with the Half Baked Cookie dessert. The picture speaks for itself – delicious.

Service was prompt and efficient. Being a pizza connoisseur, Mabe’s does stand out among other pizza establishments. I look forward to my next visit!

Mabe’s Pizza is a true Decorah classic — a legendary local spot that has been serving the community for decades, and it absolutely deserves its iconic status.

The pizza is simple, honest, and really good, the kind that doesn’t try to be fancy but gets everything right. The atmosphere is laid-back and welcoming, exactly what you want from a small-town institution that generations have grown up with.

Prices are very reasonable, especially considering how much history and charm you get along with your meal.

If you’re visiting Decorah, Mabe’s is a must — a slice of local heritage and a great pizza stop in one.

I’ve loved Mabe’s for a long time, but was reminded today of why. I made a reservation for 8-10 people, and the first people there (not me) were welcomed and seated. From the waitstaff, to the owner, to people who answered the phone, all of the folks we interacted with were super pleasant and helpful. Kara was our server and she anticipated our needs, was caring and quick! I brought 6 people from 6 different cities, and all of them raved about the pizza. Delicious as always! (Especially the Regular with double cheese, double crust.) Thanks again Mabe’s, you’re great at what you do.

This was our first visit to Decorah, and we randomly wanted pizza on our first night. Holy moly, are we glad we did. Mabe’s is some of the best pizza I have ever had, period. This place absolutely blew our minds. We also ordered mozzarella sticks and they were decent but, let’s face it, it’s pretty tough to ruin mozzarella sticks. That pizza is next level though. Service was good, the atmosphere was pleasant, and the price was on point. A truly excellent dining experience.

Ordered 3 medium pizzas for delivery for a family Christmas gathering. Pizzas were cooked adequately; plenty of cheese and toppings present. Crust was baked well and free of air pockets- Mabel would be proud. We have eaten at Mabes frequently over the years. It seems like the delivery pizzas are often perfect for family gatherings. Happy holidays!!

A friend who competed in several cross country meets held at nearby Luther College swore that the Mabe’s pizzas his team would feast on after races a decade ago were the best he’s ever eaten. I finally was able to make it to Decorah on July 4th to try Mabe’s pizza.

The crust on this 8-inch personal pizza was light and superlative, the cheese was noticeably fresh, the toppings were complementary to the remarkable balance of the pizza, and the sauce had slightly sweet and well-spiced undertones.

I’m from Chicago and spent a decade eating as much pizza as possible in Brooklyn, Queens, New Jersey, and Philadelphia. I’ve eaten pizza all over the country and world. The pizza at Mabe’s would be truly excellent anywhere, and I spent the drive home to Chicago trying to find a reason to return to Decorah with my wife so she can try the pizza.

Mabe’s Pizza is an iconic spot in Decorah, Iowa that I grew up with. The décor and interior haven’t changed since my childhood, which makes every visit feel like stepping back in time.

Their classic pizza—cut into signature squares—is an acquired taste, but once you’ve had it, you’ll find yourself craving it again and again. It’s a true hometown favorite and a must-try for anyone visiting Decorah.

The pizza was delicious, and the service was so friendly and professional. My friends and I stopped at this place on our way out of town. We tried the Cheeseburger pizza and Around the Garden. Both were loaded with toppings, and the ingredients were fresh. I loved that the Cheeseburger pizza actually used ketchup and mustard for the sauce, which many places don’t use. This creates a real burger taste. The crust was also thin and crisp, which I enjoyed.

Our server Min was wonderful. He had several tables but handled everyone with no problems. He was very friendly and really added to a great dining experience. I would definitely love to come here again.

We were recommended to try this restaurant as visitors to the area we were excited for a local non-chain eatery. The service was great and the atmosphere was cute. The food however is where this review gets a 4 star. The pizza was undercooked. It also took us 45 min from our order to receive the food. The cheese bread was good. By far the best part of the meal and it was a bit burnt. I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant but we all have different tastes. Maybe you like undercooked pizza and burnt cheese bread.
