The steamed fish had great texture, meaty and moist without being dry, and the sauce would go well with rice on its own. The sauce is very tangy and thus works well with the fish’s flesh. I would order this again for two people.
The crying tiger had a great rice but the steak was just normal. I was thinking about why I think the steak is normal and I realize that in most of these preparations you get flecks of salt that bring out the meatiness. Also in those preparations the meat is piping hot. Here the meat is a normal cut but could be better with a bit more technique.
The space looks like a classic Thai place with the bamboo seats and wooden accents. For being “near” Times Square, it’s an excellent find. One note: the mains are now $40+. Welcome to 2025 inflation.
We ordered Khao Soi, Crying Tiger, and a Fried Pork for appetizer. Cocktail drinks were fantastic as well.
5 solid stars for Lum Lum and thank you for a stellar meal!
The only thing is that the tables are quite close to each other, so it’s not the best spot for a quiet or intimate dinner. But overall, the atmosphere is really nice, and the food makes it totally worth it. I’d definitely go back!
glad My sisters and I decided to pop in last minute.
River prawn—smaller and less fresh than expected, but loved the green sauce
Sour pork salad—would’ve liked more vegetables, but the crunchy rice and peanuts added texture
Crying Tiger—steak was not as flavorful and tender as we would’ve liked, but the crispy shallot garlic rice and egg yolk were excellent
Steamed fish—star of the show, flavors were perfect with the balance of lime, garlic. The broth tasted homey and refreshing. The fish itself was fresh, tender, and meaty. Dare I say comparable to Fish Cheeks.
Taro mochi and coconut ice cream and salted egg—loved this to finish off our meal! Each component worked well with each other.
Overall satisfied with our time here. We would come back and try other dishes 🙂
For the steak, they didn’t ask how we wanted it cooked, and it seems like they only do it one way. It was also pretty bland, even with the sweet sauce. It came with rice topped with huge slices of garlic. If you don’t like eating whole garlic slices, this dish isn’t for you. There was also an egg yolk on the side (not sure what it was meant to add).
The place is also quite small, so it can feel a bit cramped.
And the moon cocktail (waiter said this was his favorite cocktail so of course I had to give it a try) came at the end of our meal (and I had to ask twice for it prior, and asked for it to be cancelled because we were almost done with our meal) when it was the first thing that we ordered. When I wanted to cancel the cocktail order, they made it almost immediately. It had such a strong rum taste; I barely tasted any of the coconut flavor or any of the other ingredients in that drink. I only had like two sips of it and gave the rest to my husband.
The chives and shrimp dumplings (recommended by the waiter) had a nice mochi skin texture, but barely had any shrimp in it. The pad kee mao had a good amount of seafood and tasted okay. When the waiter asked how everything was, I originally said that everything was okay, but when he asked a second time, I said, “Can I be honest with you? The fish has a lot of bones and is hard to eat and the cocktail really shouldn’t have came at the end of the meal.” He was very apologetic and said that the cocktail was of no charge and that if we would like, they can remove the charge of the fish too. But since my husband liked the fish, we said it’s fine, we will pay for the fish. He probably saw how upset I was at the meal, he brought out homemade complimentary coconut ice cream at the end of the meal for us. That ice cream was yummy and did make me feel better.
We sat at one of the tables outside of the restaurant – if you want to be surrounded by the nyc traffic noise, loud passerbys and essentially have the classic hustle bustle nyc dining experience, this setting would be good for it. But if you’re looking for a more calm, relaxing and quiet meal, this might not satisfy your needs.
Anyway, as I’m writing this review, I’m thankful for the follow-up service that the waiter provided to try to make my experience better. I’ve learned that what is recommended is not always suitable. I am most likely not going to be coming back here any time soon.
