The menu is small but very curated to the changing availability of the foods in season. In addition to a nice selection of options they were able to handle dairy free adjustments for me. We started with the sourdough, hummus and olive oil dipping sauce. Their sourdough was so good we ended up with 2 loaves.
Then for our entree we shared the chicken and saffron and roasted cauliflower. These dishes were amazing. The chicken saffron has an incredibly crispy skin, it felt as if it was deep fried but it was not. 10/10. The cauliflower was to die for and came with more hummus.
The aesthetic is a modern take on the 60s, with a refined pink and sea foam green color.
I have been trying to find the right word to describe why this place did not quite work for me, and the simplest answer is that it feels stale. It falls short of the hype. I went in with high expectations based on its reputation, and while the food was well executed, it did not feel like true fine dining. Nothing stood out or lingered after the meal, even though the kitchen clearly knows what it is doing.
The space itself is very clean and well kept, with a classy and polished look. The atmosphere is enjoyable, and the service was consistently solid. The staff were attentive, professional, and made the experience comfortable from start to finish.
What ultimately holds the restaurant back is that the experience does not match the level it presents itself to be at. It felt like a meal being framed as something it wasn’t. The food never crossed the line from competent to special, which made the meal feel flat.
The drink menu reinforced that feeling. The cocktails were overly complicated and felt more conceptual than welcoming. There were no simple or familiar options, and the beer list was entirely IPAs. The wine menu leaned heavily toward very dry selections, offering little variety. The restaurant comes across as broadly appealing, but in reality it caters to a narrower palate.
That said, the redeeming quality here is passion. While I do not think the food reaches fine dining quality, it is clear that the people behind it care. There is effort and intention in what they are doing, and that shows. Combined with solid service and a well maintained space, this will likely be a place many people enjoy.
For me personally, though, when compared to other local restaurants at a similar level, this would sit closer to the bottom of my list if I were deciding where to eat again. I respect the work and the enthusiasm behind it, but it does not deliver enough to stand out.
Listen, THESE chefs (and yes, I mean prior restaurant OWNERS) know what they are DOING in the kitchen! They aren’t line cooks going off receipes they can’t docker up, tweak or stray from. They are bon-a-fined actual chefs with their own mind sets, own tastes and let me tell you…they create….magic!
Trust me, it’s worth it. Haven’t had a good meal like this in a LONG time! Keep it up guys we are rooting for you Lucero’s!
